I am new to trail running and was experiencing some knee pain. I went to see Dr. Jon Albright in Des Moines to make sure my running form was ok and identify any areas I needed to work on to strengthen my knees, hips and ankles to prevent injury. I was only in town for 1 day and they were able to arrange an appointment for me at such short notice. Dr. Albright was very professional and spent a full hour showing me several stretches , exercises and how to do them with proper form in order to get the best results. They really care about their clients. I would definitely recommend this for anyone whether you are active or looking to start a program to become more active. More...

Huge credit to Dr Jon, Dr Ben, and Pro+Kinetix! I’ve had steady back pain for a handful of years, and have seen several practitioners with no long-term success. It was great to find a PT who identified what was CAUSING my pain and not simply addressing the pain itself. PRs are back because of it. Highly recommend. More...

Pro+Kinetix and Dr. Nima were fantastic to me for helping me regain function from on old tear and adhesions to my right hamstring from a sport injury. After the exam, the first treatment with PT I was able to walk with a noted increase in mobility in my right hip joint and right knee, and there was a feeling of ease in my pelvis. As I am a Doctor of Chiropractic, I am highly aware of joint misalignment and the impacts on the body. Dr. Nima set me straight and got right to the area that needed the most attention. Dr. Nima demonstrated for me two specific stretches and exercises to perform throughout each week, and I am finding myself in a better place over all for ease of motion in my leg and pelvis, more flexibility, and better strength. I found myself elated minutes into the first visit with therapy, and into the next day, when I said to myself I am booking my second appointment! Highly recommended! More...

I’m a student pursuing a degree in physical therapy. A few months ago, I reached out to the team at Pro+Kinetix about volunteering and observing in their clinic in preparation for applying to PT schools. I can’t say enough good things about my experience so far - Dr. Ben and Dr. Colin are incredibly knowledgeable, and take the time to educate their clients (and me!) about what they’re doing and why. Their approach to physical therapy is unique in that they focus on helping clients stay active during the course of rehab, and can seamlessly transition active clients from injury back to a high-level training program. This is exactly what PT should be - educational, empowering, and tailored to keeping you doing what you love to do. More...

I decided to try PT after aggravating an old lower back injury while travelling - I was in so much pain that walking was difficult and the thought of lifting weights (deadlifting in particular) or doing any CrossFit (my preferred training) was unfathomable. I found Pro-Kinetix through Yelp, and was initially impressed with how responsive, helpful and attuned to my needs Ben was through the intake process. The quality of care and professionalism continued through my treatment with Mike, where he took me through a thorough and eye-opening assessment that highlighted some weaknesses and imbalances that I was unaware of. It became apparent that my old injury hadn’t “healed”; the acute symptoms had merely subsided, and by exclusively taking it easy and focusing on movements that didn’t aggravate my injury, I was not addressing the underlying issues and remained vulnerable to reinjury. Mike programmed a well integrated and highly personalized protocol that attacked my mobility and stability issues from various angles and we hit it with a heavy dose. Over the course of working together, we discovered some additional weaknesses that I hadn’t been aware of and Mike incorporated those into my protocol. I greatly appreciated this attention to detail and believe it will go a long way in keeping me safe, healthy and strong in movements that I felt “strong” in before, but may have been just a matter of time before I would have sustained a new injury had I not put in the work with Mike. We had two in-person visits before the shelter in place order took effect and at my request I had some remote visits with Mike, which were more effective than I expected. For those potential clients who may feel uncomfortable doing in-person visits, I can recommend the remote consultations - while not a perfect substitute, they were very helpful and effective. At this point, I feel so much more confident that I can get under the barbell again, and if you had asked me three months ago, I would have been uncertain whether I would ever lift again or if I would just be resigned to bodyweight movements and cardio. I couldn’t recommend Pro-Kinetix more - their team is incredibly knowledgeable, professional, and they genuinely listen to their clients needs, limitations, and goals and design the care around those. About 2 years ago, an orthopedic surgeon told me that my constant knee pain was the beginnings of arthritis, an unfortunate side effect occurring years after tearing your ACL and undergoing subsequent surgeries.  She advised me to take NSAIDs, ice, and try to do less high impact exercise, especially running. Six months later, nothing had changed so I asked her to take an MRI to see if there was anything else we could do.  She confirmed mild arthritis, with a possible meniscus tear, gave me a cortisone shot, and prescribed me a very expensive unloading knee brace to "help control the pain."  Though I asked her about PT, she said I could just strengthen my hip at the gym and it probably wouldn't be necessary.  If these palliative treatments didn't help, we could consider doing a re-scope towards the end of the year. Without relief, I sought out other options besides surgery, which led me to Ben at Pro+Kinetix.  Not only were the reviews great and no more than a five minute walk from my apartment--I was at the point where I could not accept that at 26 I would live with constant, increasing knee pain. I cannot express how much he has changed and improved my life, without sounding overly dramatic. If not already evident from his other reviews, Ben is the best!At the first session in August, he asked me my goals and I told him I wanted to complete a sprint triathlon in 3 months.  Although I had not been able to run or perform intense cardio in about 1.5 years, I was determined to make a change.  Within 2 sessions and following the exercises diligently between, I was, and still am, completely free of pain and finished the triathlon without pain or resulting soreness.  Additionally, he has helped with shoulder pain I have started to experience being a dentist.  I am only months into my career and was already starting to have shoulder and back problems. Ben has supplied me with exercises to relieve, control, and prevent any more problems that I may experience throughout my career.  As a fellow medical professional, I really appreciate his approach of educating the patient so they can own their problem and solution.  He is great at explaining the "why's" of pain so that with a better understanding, we can carry that forward to more long-term progress and prevention.  I really appreciate the one-on-one attention and that he never tried to over-sell more treatment sessions.  To others who have tried different PT without success, or feel like you are at the end of a tiring road without a solution, I would encourage you to check out Ben and Pro+Kinetix. Ben is phenomenal. I was luckily referred to him earlier this year after an old back injury started acting up again. During our intake session, though, I also happened to mention that my shoulder had been increasingly bothering me as of late. He took the time to run diagnostics for both issues, and created and walked me through a program that would include both regular appointments and at-home exercises. It's been a number of months now, and while PT is definitely a gradual process that requires buy-in from the patient, it really really works, especially with someone as knowledgeable and conscientious as Ben guiding you through it. Over the course of several months, Ben slowly increased the number and difficulty of my exercises, and eventually incorporated weights back into my workouts. I'm now down to the very occasional check-in appointment with him, am pain-free during everyday activities, and back to my regular workouts (with weights!) without issue. On the rare occasion I do get a twinge or just start to feel at all off, Ben's given me the tools to recognize and address it head-on so that I can keep myself healthy and injury-free (but if I do ever need help, I know his advice is a quick email or text away). It should also be mentioned that Ben is a great communicator and takes the time to walk you through the "why" behind everything he's doing/suggesting. He also has been super accommodating of my somewhat chaotic (and ever-changing) schedule and is just a gem of a human being. In short, if you're in need of a physical therapist, go see Ben. More...

I had a childhood accident that exacerbated into lower back issues due to sitting a lot at a computer desk. I started working out on my own. However, exercise was difficult due to the pain in my lower back. Persevering lead to more injury which my doctor diagnosed as Meralgia Paresthetica- really painful nerve injury. I have had personal trainers and other physical therapists but I didn't want to go back to them. I was either not ready to hear what they had to say at the time or was uninspired by them or I wasn't yet mentally available for the work. However, at this time, I knew it was time for change. and I knew I needed help and could not do it on my own. Fortunately, I learnt about Ben from the gym right below my work place and I scheduled my first appointment.  Five things I like about Ben:1. He is both a Physical therapist and Personal Trainer. 2. He believed that I could get better more than I did. I was so discouraged at this point and full on regret for not having taken better care of my body. I didn't know how to see my way out of the pain. But for some reason, I decided to believe in Ben's belief that I will be out of pain in no time. And sure enough, he was right! I have gone from seeing him weekly, to biweekly now. And his plan is to get me to the point where I can be completely pain free and begin to workout independently. We started with rehabilitative exercises for some weeks. But now, I have a gym membership and I now do strength training. Now, our sessions involve us going through proper strength training exercises that are appropriate for my progress for me to perform independently at the gym. 3. I really appreciate how he is equipping me to be independent and how to deal with flare ups should they occur. 4. I ask him all sorts of questions. I am nerdy in the sense that I need to know, intellectually, why I am doing what I am doing. And Ben encourages questions and provides answers. 5. He is fun to work with. He is easy going and tells a whole bunch of dad jokes...What can I say? I am glad I met Ben and I really enjoy working with him. I look forward to our workout sessions and I have actually developed a sense of optimism about my health I thought I had lost. More...

I am a very active athlete and personal trainer with a background in Physical Therapy.  Shy of actually graduating from my DPT program, I can confidently say I know a bit about Anatomy and Physiology.  With that, I vouch for Ben's knowledge and practice.  I work along many other practitioners at my facility, Truve, in the downtown Oakland area.  All of whom are knowledgeable and accomplished.  Ben is younger than all of them but it is his opinions I trust and respect the most.  If I ever have an injured athlete, I trust Ben to rehabilitate them.  If I have a question about programming, Ben has the didactic and erudite knowledge I agree with and trust.  Essentially, he is my go to for all the people I train, myself included.    As an endurance athlete, I have a propensity to overtrain.  This is how I came into Ben's care as his patient.  After a race in May, I thought I had torn my iliopsoas.  Through manual tests, Ben ruled it out and actually suggested a labral tear or hip fracture.  After an MRI a week later, it turned out to be the latter.  Since then, I have changed my entire workout program to what he has suggested.  I was afraid I would backslide immensely due to my hip fracture.  Ben has helped me make the most of it and actually learn a lot about my training and approach to cardio as a result of it.  Despite the limitation of only being able to use my left leg, my physique has actually improved and my lifts have gotten better for my upper body.  And my (dynamic) balance on my good leg is incredible.  My right leg has atrophied slightly but not nearly as dramatically (I'm sure) than if I had not sought his guidance.Ben's time is also worth every penny: rather than spending a mere 10 minutes like other PTs, Ben spends every minute with you.  No middleman.  In a country with a broken health care system and over saturated clinics, Ben's approach is refreshing.  No Aides or Assistants - just one-on-one quality care without the rush.  You don't develop a patient-doctor relationship with him but rather a good rapport and emotional synergy; your health and wellness is not his job but rather his passion.  His calm nature, Maharishi attitude, empathy and thoroughness is what every PT should embody. As an added benefit to athletes such as myself, he works in a private fitness studio.  In other words, you know you can get everything you need from Ben to fully return to play.  He has a lot of tools at his disposal and he uses them.Ben is a breath of fresh air to the PT practice.  He is not just an asset to my facility but to anyone who is looking for a coach and a rehabilitation expert.  His approach and practice to PT should be the way of the future. Just started working with Ben about a month ago. He has already proven himself an effective, compassionate, and intellectually curious physical therapist and fitness trainer. I have trouble in my knees and back and Ben is able to translate those shortcomings into strategic and rigorous workouts that leave me sore, but motivated and pain-free. I had a first-rate PT/personal training combo when I lived in NYC. Ben is right up there with the best of them as far as I am concerned. So far so great. More...

Ben rocks! I went to him with a whole list of problems, knee, back, shoulder, etc. I hadn't been exercising in a few years because of one pain problem after another. I finally just reached the point where I was just over it and sick of always feeling like shit or like I can't do stuff.Ben helped sort through all of the exact pains with no hesitation, he took great notes and knew exactly what to do.It turns out this list of various pains that I kept attributing to just general body "aging" were actually things that he could treat with physical therapy and specific exercises.I kid you not - after just a few sessions plus doing my homework exercises, which took no longer than around 30 min a couple times a week, my body did a complete turn around. Back pain - gone. Knee - 90% fixed. Shoulder - 75% fixed. And my energy is double from when I started with him. This is all in just like 3 weeks.I am definitely not an athletic sporty person, so this is not a case of just bouncing back to some kind of peak fitness. I went from being all achy and not wanting to do anything that took a bunch of effort because I'd end up in some kind of pain - to being ready to uplevel my exercise program and looking forward to going more times per week.  This is a real turnaround and I know the change is totally due to Ben's program and expert advice. I have been dealing with annoying back pain for several months and a litany of chiropractors, physical therapists and acupuncturists weren't helping. Three sessions with Dr Ben and I'm almost back to normal. In addition to knowing his stuff, Ben is also great to be around. He spends time with his patients in hour-long sessions and really takes the time to understand the body (and requisite treatment), explains things clearly, while not being a bore. He's also easy to schedule with and efficient with billing. 5/5 recommend! More...

Approximately 6 months ago, I injured my shoulder doing some incline bench press / overhead press exercises. Long story short, Ben fixed my shoulder in 3 weeks of treatment. The diagnosis was solid. The 1h sessions I had with Ben were packed with efficient diagnostic exercises, cupping / recovery stuff that helped with pain, and Ben coaching me through exercises that I could do at home to speed up recovery. After just one week of working with Ben, my shoulder started getting better. I was blown away. Before working with Ben, I wasted 3 months working with two other physical therapists. Both were highly rated on yelp. Turns out the other two therapists misdiagnosed me, and gave me shitty care. Those sessions felt rushed, and I felt like I was getting scammed since those therapists spent 25 min each week just icing me, something that I clearly could do at home. Working with Ben was the opposite. 1h of his time was worth more than every single PT session I previously had. Ben was engaged and helpful for every single minute. Each session was packed with specific diagnostic exercises, cupping, other active recovery stuff that helped, and coaching me on the recovery exercises I was meant to do at home. Like I said, after implementing Ben's training plan, the pain went away in 1 week, and 30 days later, I'm back in the gym. Some other stuff I liked: Ben is super easy to schedule with. Ben inquired about my injury before each session, so he came prepared with a long todo-list of stuff to cover in the session. Super professional and thorough. Ben taught me why every exercise / recovery thing mattered. This made me super motivate to do it at home. Ben fixed my shoulder!!! More...

Q&As

Seeing the life changing results of our patients. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing someone get back to being able to play with their kids, run that 10K they didn't think was possible, and seeing people get back to the workouts and sports they enjoy once again!

Pro+Kinetix was created to change the landscape of physical therapy by taking a modern, personalized approach. The current trend is that many physical therapy clinics are now requiring their physical therapists to see multiple patients at once. Dr. Ben, the founder, decided he could no longer watch patients slow down their recovery time in large physical therapy "mills". He knew his patient's deserved better and therefore, he founded Pro+Kinetix. The Pro+Kinetix difference: We heal your injury or chronic issue, address the biomechanical root cause, bulletproof your body to prevent recurrence, & allow you to attain your athletic aspirations. We're different because we're BOTH Doctors of Physical Therapy AND Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialists (a requirement for all pro sports trainers). And typically in just 5 to 10, once a week sessions, handled exclusively by Doctors of Physical Therapy (not assistants), we take you to whole new level.

We'll let our 150+ 5 Star Reviews on Google & Yelp speak on that ;)

Yes, we work with patients all over the world! We have helped patients remotely long before COVID & have supplemented this when patients have needed to travel for work extensively.

*Our entire staff has been vaccinated for COVID-19*

We've also been working closely with the Alameda Health Department as well as the California Board of Physical Therapy with regards to safety measures taken. We have a screening process for all patients prior to scheduling, mask enforcement, staggering appointment times of when PTs are scheduled so only 2-3 physical therapists max are in the 7000 square foot facility at a time (enforcing social distancing between patients), and then also implementing sanitation guidelines. Our treatment style of 1-on-1 patient care also helps to keep the number of patients in at one time to a minimum!

Services

We help active adults & athletes in Oakland and the surrounding Bay Area get back to workouts and sports they enjoy without surgery, stopping activities they love, or relying on pain medication.

Pro+Kinetix Utilizes a 3-Step Process:

Step 1: Find The Real Cause Of Your Pain We'll take you through a comprehensive biomechanical assessment and identify the cause of your problem. Then, we'll explain what must be done to get you back to full speed and back to the activities you love.

Step 2: Fix Your Problem Areas We'll develop a treatment plan that will be tailored specifically to you and your goals. This will ultimately allow us to get you stronger, pain-free, and on track to reach your goals more effectively and efficiently.

Step 3: Stay At Peak Performance Once we get you back to exercising pain free, we'll implement strategies to get you performing at an even higher level than you were prior to your injury. We'll also implement strategies to "bulletproof" your body to decrease the likelihood of future injuries occurring.
