Gosh, I don't even know where to start. I feel like thanking the hair gods for Nycayen. Like many of you, I'm new to NYC area and after spending so much time looking for a stylist I found Nycayen on yelp and his reviews were so great I had to call him. Luckily he was able to fit me in early the next morning. The hair that I had brought prior wasn't that great and instead of just sewing it Nycayen took care of everything. He called a hair distributer who is within walking distance and thanks to him I got a great deal on beautiful hair that I would have never chosen for myself. My hair is very damaged due to me getting micro link extensions that my hair dreaded around so my hair is not in great shape before my hair was braided Nycayen trimmed off of my dead hair and educated me on how to properly take care of my hair without damaging. His assistant braided my hair and thats when the magic began. This is without a doubt the flattest weave I've ever had in my life. I know that as long as I'm in New York I have a stylist. Not only because his work is so amazing but because he actually takes in mind what is best for your hair type and lifestyle. I've never had a curly weave before and since I'm always on the go thats what he recommended for me since its so low maintenance. after the install the hair looked beautiful but Nycayen also took the time to show me how I could blow dry it straight for a different look in addition to showing me a few other way I could style it. Afterwards he trimmed the weave for me and then styled it with beautiful curls. I walked out of the salon feeling like Beyonce. Nycayen is such a talented artist and just a great person to be around he's so sweet and hilarious how could you not adore him. He without a doubt knows how to treat his clients and I'm telling you ladies he is worth every penny. Do yourself and your hair a favor by seeing him. More...

So I've read a few reviews and seen many people complain and say the price is too much which granted if you're comparing to other boroughs yes it is more, but for the city his is actually quite affordable vs other hairstylist. I love Nycayen, his personality down to how inviting he makes the whole experience, he's a sweetheart. He uses a braiding technique for weaving very unique, and leaves your tracks unnoticeable.  Which works out great especially if you're like me and don't want the world knowing what you have going on under the hair LOL. I have no complaints. You pay for what you get he is constantly consistent with his work and I'm never disappointed :)! More...

Five years ago, this week I walked into a mid-town salon that I found on Yelp and Nycayen was my stylist. Little did I know that my life and hair would change from that day.  Not only has Nycayen styled my hair while I was living in New York and after I relocated due to work to both California and Denver, he continued to style my hair on visits back to New York to this day.  I have introduced him to and he has styled my daughter, sister-in-law and a close friend.  All who still credit him with the best hair styles/cut of their life. Not only does he take the time to get to know you and your hair personally, he is willing to listen to your concerns and his "mane" focus is making you feel and look beautiful.  As long as I am able to to travel to New York, Nycayen will be my only choice to style my hair. I just moved from LA to NYC and was in a super pinch to get my hair done before the 4th of July weekend. Usually finding a new, go-to hair stylist is the hardest part about moving to a new city (at least it is for black girls with incredibly high standards for weave hair care and maintenance). But somehow I lucked up and found Nycayen on my first try. (Thank you yelp!)Being only few days before a huge holiday weekend, I just knew it was going to be impossible to book anyone on such short notice. Boy was I wrong. I called Nycayen, left him a voicemail, and he called me back within the hour to confirm my appointment.Nycayen has an amazing, radiating energy that immediately makes you feel at home, even over the phone! When I got to the salon, Nycayen made a point to come over and greet me with a big hug, even though he was working on a client. He immediately made me feel like I was getting my hair done by an old friend, and not a stylist I'd only just met. Usually going to the hair salon is filled with lots of waiting, and most of that time you have no idea where you're stylist is, what they're doing, or why you're still sitting under the dryer even though your hair has been dry for 30 minutes. But not with Nycayen! He had me in and out in 2.5 hours even though he was working on another client at the same time! And he kept me updated the entire time, and was constantly making sure I was good on drinks, etc.Nycayen has by far the best hands of any stylist I've seen. Getting my hair washed by him was amazing. He should start charging for head massages! (I mean not really because then his prices wouldn't be as affordable as they are now, but he totally could). By the time we got to the styling part of the appointment I was already hooked. I was literally thinking, I don't even care how my hair comes out. Nycayen's personality is so charming, and I had so much fun chatting with him that I would've come back again and again just to hang out! But of course, my hair turned out beautifully. Nycayen made sure to chat with me and figure out what style I was going for so the end product was exactly what I wanted. I left the salon feeling brand new! As far as my experience at Serenity Salon goes, it was amazing from start to finish. As soon as I walked in to the salon, someone offered me a beverage and a cape. (Any establishment that offers me complimentary wine within the first five minutes of my being there gets an automatic A+ from me! lol) Everyone was very professional and attentive, and the place had a very relaxed and welcoming vibe. Suffice it to say Nycayen Moore is the only stylist I will be seeing for the rest of my time in NYC! More...

I am a male friend of Nycayen's for over 17 years.  I had him as a stylist and barber in Chicago and New York.  He's a consummate professional, discretionary, and a great teacher.  Recently, I've asked Nycayen to color my hair.  He's seen me through braids, perms, texturizers, locks, and natural hair.  I used to model in early 80's and lived in Los Angeles, so I've been through quite a few hair professionals.  Nycayen's work is consistently professional.  He has never slacked and has taken me in on short notice, which I am certainly grateful for.  His demeanor is comforting, and for a short time, I am pampered and made to feel special again.  The color is fantastic the maintenance is easy.  I was worried about breakage, but Nycayen counseled me in how to care for it.  He even referred me to his personal barber for a custom cut.  Now who does that?!!  His barber is outstanding!  I left the shops with color and cut looking so good it was scary!  I haven't worried about hair in many years.  Nycayen has been a huge part of that.  Thank you again Nycayen! Just in case you don't make it to the end of this review the point is that THIS MAN CAN DO HAIR LIKE NO OTHER.  I most recently went to get my hair cut and to get some bangs and I literally almost caused accidents cause of my hair when I left.  His hair is that serious.  Not only is his work amazing, he is HILARIOUS and I'm always dying of laughter when I go in.  Such a great person; and he also has your hairs best interest in mind! So if you want a stylist and a hair CARE specialist, he's your guy.  My roommate now gets her hair done with him and my cousin in CA, after seeing my hair, was saying how she needs to fly out to NYC so he can cut her hair.  You will be a walking advertisement.  So on to the details in case you made it this far:1) Scheduling: Just send him a text or call him. He's quick to respond and I've never had scheduling issues.2) Prices: They are comparable to most salons that I found in NY and LA (wash and press and hair cut on THICK natural hair)3) Hair Types: He does it all.  I firmly believe that if someone can do my hair well, they can do anyone's hair.4) Styling: He is so meticulous! I've gotten my hair cut by him twice (1st time was a trim and the 2nd was a shoulder length bob with long shaggy bangs) and both times I felt like every strand on my head was cut, but he somehow maintained my length.  Seriously don't know how he does it. 5) Time: He is efficient and does it as quickly as your hair will allow him too :)  6)Products: Whatever he uses is magic.  I've had curls appear in my hair after he has done my hair and I later washed it that I have never seen before.  I always leave with my hair shiny, soft and light.   7) Salon Location: So easy to get to! It's in a very central location so there's a lot of trains you can take to get to Serenity.  When you walk into the building, go back to the elevator and go up to the 4th floor.  Serenity is on the south side of 33rd street . All in all, you will not regret it.  I actually made a Yelp account just so I could put my 2cents in cause he's that good.  Highly highly recommend! More...

I have been searching for a well rounded stylist, that has the know how to really take care of my hair and not just make it look good. I am soo happy I have found him. When I walked in I immediately felt a connection with him because I could tell that he cared about the health of my hair and provided techniques that would work for me and my life style. Our consultation was very thorough and he wanted to make sure he understood what I wanted and gave me suggestions that would not only help me now but gave me a plan. I never felt rushed and he treated me like I was his only client which felt great. I do know that healthy hair comes from a healthy scalp. He had customized (high quality) products and developed a regime personally for me that would nourish my scalp and hair. I loved the head massage he gave me when he conditioned my hair to. What I loved most is that he is such an honest and genuine person. I knew I was in good hands and found my "home" for hair care. If you want someone who is experienced in all aspects of hair care and a bomb do I would definitely come here and request Nycayen!!! I have made another appointment for myself and 2 sisters. This is a three part opinion.Visit 1-February-2013I was in desperate need of replacing my hair stylist in Washington Heights. I perused the internet and settled upon Yelp. After hours of scouring hair salons/stylists, I reached out to Nycayen Moore in Serenity Salon in Korea Town, NY. The first time I visited him was February 2013. We made an appointment for the end of the week. I was excited to have him beautify my hair. I make and sell natural hair products, however when my regular stylist lost her rental space, I needed my hair flawless ASAP. I came to my appointment a little late because there was a snow storm. He briefly chatted with me and offered me several options for beverages and he jumped right in. My hair is bra strap level, 4b-4c type, and at the time, I was wearing it in a bun on the top of my hair. Most Dominican stylists who I've gone to in the past see it coiffed up, and quote me one price, but midway, raise the price once they have to detangle it when wet. Not the case at all with Nycayen. I was in and out of the chair a little less than 3 hours. To tell you how good Nycayen is, on that first visit, everyone noticed how I walked in, but midway, with him blowing my hair out and flat ironing it, you would have thought that behind all the fog was Beyonce! The reason I say that is because he did a phenomenal job on transforming my hair. Amazing! A few days later, I relocated to Texas. I settled into San Antonio for about a month, then went to Austin. My hair stayed manageable but the weather and humidity in Texas is nothing like that in New York. My hair didn't swell. It turned into deep curls. I mean beautifully textured, weave-like hair. I was asked so many times where I got my hair done. In April-May, I went to Dakar, Senegal, W. Africa, to spend time with my family. The temperature and humidity there, was another adjustment from the weather in the States. I picked up some Chi Silk Infusion and wrapped my hair under a silk scarf until I got off the plane and called it a day. I wore my hair out everyday. For the majority of my stay, my hair, still with it's curl formation had length. I was happy. I had never had a wash, blow dry and flat iron last so long. Mind you, my hair is naturally kinky and I like to wear it straight therefore I always wrap my hair with a silky scarf. I returned in June to Nycayen.Visit 2- June 2013I made an appointment with Nycayen spur of the moment upon my arrival back into New York. Again, he was very accommodating. I think I managed to get there a little tardy but he got me in and out within 2 hours. I met Ebonee his assistant. They work in tandem with each other and I love her energy. I never feel my hair pulled and I never feel rushed. But, when I get to my appointment, I always feel that my time is respected, which is very important. I know what it's like to be in a salon for hours, to get handled over by several people, and leave close to closing. That becomes a day project. Who really has that type of time to waste? Unnecessary. I say that because I always feel like Nycayen is there for my beck and call when I need him. Never do I have to wait. Never do I have to hear all the gossip going on about other people. I admit, he is pricier than my last girl, but the results don't compare, and my looks are important to me, especially being a beacon to my own product line. I am very pleased with the trim he gave me in February. As my hair was growing out, it had a beautiful form. He is worth every cent. I only go to him. Nycayen respects his clients and he isn't intimidated by hair. Nor does he pressure you into getting a relaxer. At the Dominican salons that I frequented in the past, I was often suggested to get a relaxer 99% of the time. The last girl who Nycayen replaced never did. But, she also never gave me HAIR ORGASM. It's hard to go backwards when something like beautiful hair changes your confidence, how people receive you, and what people are willing to do for you. It compliments a polished look.   Visit 3- November 2013So I have made Nycayen the only person able to touch my hair. Him and his assistant Ebonee. She washes me, we chitchat. She has very skilled hands. She towels me and places me in the chair, hair damp, and they go to town blow-drying and flat- ironing my hair. I don't feel tugging like some may think. They work well together, and I think it is a skill to be able to work with two or more people in a person's hair without you knowing. That's how good the feeling was. And, I like to have my hair blow-dried before flat-ironing rather than going under the drier. I feel like I can get in and out real quick. I'm never waiting. I plan on returning again to New York to pick up my items from storage. Best believe I will be getting my hair done. Since I travel often, and live between states and countries, I am not adverse to traveling back to Nycayen to get my hair done and maintaining the style until my next visit. I usually tip 25%. I never thought I could get a weave like this in NYC!   I'm from Philadelphia via Cali, where weaves are used to assist in hair growth and the definition of a "good weave" is one that looks and moves like the hair is growing out of the scalp!  I recently moved to NYC from Philadelphia and was really disappointed with the quality weaves, or hair care, for that matter in NYC.  They either 1.) "Fake" looking, 2.)Bumpy,3.) Horribly cut, or 4.) Damage your natural hair and, more often than not, ALL of the above!  Not Nycayen! Just to let you know, when I found him I was resigned to walking around NYC looking a mess  after trying so many other "weavologist" and hairdressers in the 15 months we have lived in NYC.  He must have heard the desperation in my voice, lol.  Even though he is extremely busy, he was so accommodating and fit me in!   He is a sweetie.Since it was my first time with him I didn't know what to expect.  When I walked in I was greeted by both him and his beautiful assistant.  They were warm, friendly, and professional, and most importantly KNOWLEDGEABLE.  I showed him a few pictures of a layered cut and the rest was history! In under three hours (that boy is quick AND thorough) I was walking out with the hair of life!  Beautiful natural Victoria Secret model layers, with the perfect amount of volume (i.e. it didn't look like I had four packs of yaki on my head).  My hair moved, bounced, and looks like it's growing out of my scalp.  This is important because a LOT of hairdressers in NYC do not know how to cut or razor "ethnic" or weave hair.  In my opinion, usually, to ask for "layers" either ends with blank stares or horribly amateurish results.  But Nycayen did not disappoint. The best part is, the weave is sooo flat, I can pull my hair into a SLEEK ponytail and HIGH tight bun and NOONE can tell I am wearing a FULL weave with just a little hair left out.  This is especially impressive considering my natural hair is past my shoulders (unskilled hairdressers swear long hair makes for a bumpy "fake" looking weave, wrong) and my daughters hair comes to the middle of her back (yes, she joined the Nycayen's "weave of life" fan club as well, lol).  Nycayen made sure we were satisfied when we left, because he does NOT play when it comes to customer service.  Seriously, my daughter even decided she wanted more layers a few days' later (teenagers, lol). But he fit her in last minute and made adjustments to her hair in between two clients.  All without a hint of "attitude" or "annoyance"! He listened patiently to make sure she left satisfied.  Ladies, this can be rare in "our" salon spots, lol.  The best part is Nycayen believes in maintaining your natural hair as well.  He knows about braid tension, hair and scalp health.  Believe me, your hair will not only grow, it will be pampered (including the edges)!  Plus when you decide to rock your own hair, he is a beast handling natural or relaxed hair. Hands down, he gives some of the best weaves in NYC, Philadelphia, or Cali.  When you take into account his pricing compared to the others.... he quickly moves to the number one slot.  He is not cheap! But for what you get, hunty, he is worth it! What can I say, I was sold!  He is now my official hairdresser and my two sisters and my daughter! More...

Nycayen was super amicable and very skilled. He was at the salon waiting for me when I arrived; brownie points for punctuality. The salon was stylish and very clean. The reception staff were very gracious as well. Nycayen asked me what services I wanted, he listened and stuck to the plan; which is refreshing. I've dealt with other stylists who decide to do what they want with your hair. The shampoo was very thorough and his washing style was relaxing but effective; my hair felt very clean. He used high end products and he treated my hair with respect - no tugging, pulling or yanking! The best part was my haircut. Nycayen evened out my cut and only cut as much of my hair as was necessary. He is not scissor-happy at all. He kept me informed of what he was doing to my hair at all times asked me several times for my opinion and if I was comfortable. Nycayen is very professional he is friendly and makes conversation but is not overly chatty. He takes his cue from the client which is uber professional in my opinion. I am so thrilled I found Nycayen!I went on my usual yelp/google hunt last week, searching for a stylist that could do natural hair. I havent had a perm in almost 4 years which was a personal decision I made in order to keep my hair healthy. The end result is while my hair has grown long and thick it has always been a PAIN to maintain. I usually would stick with weaves or put my hair in a bun because i couldnt do much else. I've gone through some time without a regular stylist because I couldnt trust them not to destroy my hair. Also I either I had to work with driving all the way out to Brooklyn for ok but sloowwwww service or I had to contend with getting my hair blown out at a Dominican salon (the girls would always look at me like an alien whenever i showed them my hair). Its been a borderline annoying and sad situation, and I had been HOPING for something better. Enter Nycayen who saved the day!I was looking for someone who could do an updo for a wedding im in. I wanted to make sure it was someone I could trust to a degree (since the service didnt involve chemicals) but that I knew could really *work* hair. After reading these reviews, going to his website, and viewing his videos I made up my mind and emailed Nycayen in the afternoon. Late that evening he responded, first with an apology for such a late response then with details of availability. We exchanged a few messages (which he responded to immediately) and set up the appointment,.When I arrived to a salon a few days later I was pleasantly surprised. Not only was it in a prime location (Nycayen works out of Prada Grusel salon), it was close to my job, clean, and professional. As soon as I walked in Nycayen was there to greet me and assisted me in setting up. He asked if i wanted a beverage and if i was comfortable. Nycayen was truly hospitable and made me feel like we knew each other for years. After a short consultation on what I wanted done, he went to work immediately. (3 stars right there)Nycayen washed and deep conditioned my hair himself. One thing I took great notice of (and was happy about) was the fact that while in the bowl he did NOT attempt to comb my hair! For some people it seems obvious but I cannot count the many times stylists have attempted to comb out my hair (wet or otherwise) without (at least) first using their hands to help detangle. Natural hair is delicate! Anyway, after the wash, Nycayen blew out my hair to straighten and begin styling. When I say he worked with my (self proclaimed) "afrikka bambaata hair" like it was butter--im not joking! There was never a time during the entire service that I felt he was being rough or rushing. It was quite a lovely experience and I was pleased. Since I was getting a general updo I left the actual style up to him and did not look until it was finished. When i was done I looked up and a HUGE smile crossed my face. My natural hair was LAID as never before! It's been the first time in a long time that I had been truly excited about how my hair looked. The entire service was over $100. While some people might initially balk at the price I realized that I was paying for true quality. I was received by a stylist that was professional, on time, worked immediately (whole service took about 1.5hrs), was *actually* kind, and has real skills. I cant wait to visit him again!PS- Nycayen is known for being able to do ANY type of hair (though he specializes in ethnic hair). His weaves are masterful as well. More...

How many people write their new hair stylist a thank you card the day after their first visit?  Yes, ma'am...it's that serious. If you know anything about searching for a stylist who can fabulate* black hair, you know how frustrating the experience can be.  Well, I can promise that if you come in to see Nycayen, your worries will be over!I found the salon that he works out of (Prada Grusel) pretty easily.  It's located at 44th bet. 2nd and 3rd...only a few blocks from Grand Central Station.  As soon as I walked in, Nycayen waved to me, came over to greet me and gave me a hug.  He made me feel like a long lost friend as opposed to a new customer.  Much appreciated.  I was offered something to drink by the receptionist, chose a glass of water, and Nycayen escorted me to his station. He was working on someone's hair when I arrived, and apologized that he was running slightly behind because his assistant called out.  I didn't mind at all because even though he was finishing up someone else, I only waited about 10 minutes for him to start me.  I was getting a touchup and trim.  Seeing as how I was a new customer, he threw in a deep conditioner and eyebrow lightening for free.  Yay for appreciating new business!!!  His running slightly behind actually gave me the chance to check out his work first hand.  The woman that he styled before me had naturally curly hair and had just gotten a color and cut.  The color was fabulous and she couldn't stop raving about how good she looked.  He also gave her a funky curled look that she could play with and style different ways.  She really did look "summer perfect".  I was pretty impressed. After blowing me out, he cut new layers into my hair and styled it.  I loooove it!!!  I have loved previous stylists, but it usually takes me a day or two to get my hair to fall the way that I want it to.  I have never been able to walk out of the salon with my hair as "city chic" as it was yesterday.  The layers fell perfectly, and I couldn't stop tossing my hair back all night.  Lol.  As soon as I got in the car, even my boyfriend took notice.  Come on ladies!  If a guy can see the immediate difference, Nycayen must be working some magic in his shop!  He doesn't just style black hair though...he welcomes all hair types.  After seeing his work, I cannot wait for my next appointment. The total price for a relaxer and trim was $141 (after tax, before tip).  Not bad Nycayen, not bad.If you're looking for a stylist who respects your time, is professional, friendly, and will have your hair looking fierce as hell...look no further. Finally! I found a hair stylists/beautician that can work with black hair (African-American hair)  and listens to the customer.  It is so hard to find a good black hair stylist and I am delighted with his patience and knowledge about hair.   My situation was that I had went to a beautician who dyed my hair after I had dyed it 5 days previously. Well, my hair fell out.  I went to Nycayen the first time and I was really adamant about not cutting off my hair.  He worked with me to put together a style that I didn't have to.  Due to the breakage for the dye, it continue to break so I went back to him and asked him to work with me to cut off my hair... I wanted to start over.Nycayen pampered me. He took his time to clip my hair slowly to a length that I felt confident with. I am so pleased and happy with the results.  He will definitely be may GO TO Hair dresser for now on.  I want someone who listens and cares about the way that I feel.  In addition, he gave me a style that I can actually maintain and I don't have to break the bank to keep up a style that would be impossible for me to work with considering my active lifestyle. The prices are right on with the rest of the stylists in Manhattan yet you get so much more. Great  Personality. Honesty. Patience. More...

I had been wearing my hair natural for a decade; then I used a relaxer for the last year; but frankly my hair, my look reflected the work mode that I was in. ..and I needed a change. Thank goodness for the universe; I started googling; researching salons; stylists; then I came to yelp; read the rave reviews about Nycayen Moore; watched his you tube videos and loved what I saw. Even though I have been in a rut, I knew what I was willing to do and not do. I made an appointment with Nycayen, liked him immediately. He knows HAIR and after examining your HAIR, he knows how to bring out your best but not having you look like a video vixen. Nycayen brought me back to life; brought out the bounce in my spirit. Brought out the best part of me. A ME that does not look like everyone else.NYCAYEN is a Keeper! More...

Although Nycayen's main clientele is female, he does an amazing job with men's styling. I was ready for something new, but not quite sure what I wanted. Nycayen totally hooked me up with a new hair cut and I am very excited about my new look. He listens to you and what you have in mind ... and then turns on his artistic talents and creates a hair style that totally rocks. And you know when you have a great haircut, you are on top of the world! Thanks again Nycayen! I will be back again and again. More...

My hair is natural and I might get it blown out or pressed once a year. Well, this year I went to Nycayen for a blow out and was all smiles when I saw the finished look in the mirror. Not only did he use products to protect my hair from the heat from the blow dryer, but he explained what he was applying to my hair every step of the way. I usually have to ask stylists what they are applying, but Nycayen provided the information without prompting. My hair was full and looked healthy. I hadn't seen it look like that in quite some time. And, his warm personality made my salon experience pleasurable. I recommend Nycayen! More...
