Q&As

I love design.

I love the software. I love being able to create. I love helping others share their message with the world through items I design for them. I love learning new things - and that is something that is NEVER ending in this field. Every day there is something to learn, new technology, new trends, new ways of doing things that are quicker, more efficient, and produce better results. The industry expands while it contracts. Print - which was my first home, is reducing in some ways, while digital is exploding, but the philosophy of good design remains the same.

I found passion in branding & strategic design. Where design is not the afterthought but an integral player at the table. Design is not about making things pretty (although, many times it does) it's about finding out what a business' issues are & developing a strategic method to overcome them. Sometimes this includes design (a new landing page, a direct mail campaign, trade show event, even re-branding), sometimes it doesn't (developing standardized operating procedures, restructuring, client care programs).

I had considered starting my own business for many years, but the events that lead me to take the leap were the result of simple necessity. The international firm where I was the in-house designer for the North American region, restructured and outsourced the organization's design work to an agency in South Africa. That coupled with the expulsion of my special needs child from public school necessitated I have a position that would provide flexibility to accommodate him and his educational/medical needs. I started my business, finished my Master of Fine Arts Degree and haven't looked back. My son is thankfully back in school, one able to handle is unique qualities, but the thought of returning to corporate American no longer holds the allure it once did.

I am good at what I do. I enjoy what I do and that translates to a better experience for my clients. I am interested in their businesses and what they want to achieve. Although I can create most any concept that is brought to me, I have found those clients that are open to developing more of a partnership often discover there are more benefits than just having a design completed. As business owners, we are often times too close to the problem or issues facing our business. When a client is willing to be open to some strategic questions, sometimes we find that the reason they sought out a designer in the first place had a deeper issue that needed to be addressed. When we delve deeper we don't just put a band-aid (postcard/brochure/etc.) on their problem, but actually, take steps to solving a true concern for them.

Yes. Most of the clients that I have worked with over the past 9 years have been through remote projects. Communications are generally between email, phone & video conferencing.

My clients and I rarely (if ever) meet face to face, so situations, where Covid-19 could be transmitted, were non-existent. However, we are now fully immunized and still following CDC guidelines.

Branding encompasses all of the experience a person has with a company person, product, or service. It’s not what you, the business/organization, want it to be, but what they — the general public—feel, think, or emote upon seeing the logo, hearing the name, or interacting with a product. It is the personality of the company/organization.

While the logo and identity system deal with the tangible elements of a company’s marketing and interactions with the public, the brand is about the intangible aspects. Creating a successful and appealing brand requires proper strategy, positioning, marketing, and messaging to appeal to a company’s target market. It is critical to understand that brand creation comes from people outside of the company—the customers, prospects, or the general public. A company can influence and provide valuable assets to direct and guide its tribe as it grows. Still, the emotional response, which makes up a fundamental element of a brand, is not in its control. An agency/designer can assist with the development of strategy, positioning, marketing, and logo. One critical step remains with management; they must lead the implementation of the company’s behavior, ethics, and values. When a customer feels in sync with a company, it is an emotional bond, a connection, based on shared vision and values.

Marketing strategy consists of an exploration of various marketing avenues with a focus on end results. Once the appropriate avenue to reach your desired outcome has been identified, we will assist in developing assets and implementing the approved strategy.

The “Style and Use Guide” (or Standards document) establishes consistency for how the logo, stationery, print & digital elements from the identity system are executed and applied across various media. The Style and Use Guide shows how to implement the usage of these elements. It contains everything from the logo’s construction to the colors and the use and style of images. The Guide can also include the tone of voice for copy and samples of marketing materials. Following the Guide ensures every time the company makes an impression on the public, the tone of voice, manner, and look and feel is consistent with the established identity and support the overall brand.

Neurotic Dog Studios offers general design services in print, web, and media.

An Identity System provides direction and rules for the visual aspects of a company. There are many elements* that make up an identity system. These include the logo and stationery; colors; taglines; naming; marketing collateral: brochures, direct mail, website design, email, social media, online, radio, magazine, billboard, and display advertising; product design and packaging; uniforms; signage; and vehicle graphics. These elements do not make up all company’s identity systems. Some have more, and some have less. A corporate identity program needs to address all the company’s potential impressions and minimize the inconsistent or nonexistent application of the identity that results in non-optimal brand perception. With all of these elements in play, this is where the development of a Standards document becomes paramount.

A logo is a mark (text, symbol, or a combination of the two) representing an organization, product, or service offering. Many people mistakenly think that the logo is the “brand.” This misconception stems from the origins of brand marks (logos) as physical brands that livestock owners burned into their property. In our modern business world, the logo has become the ownership/production mark that allows customers to identify similar offerings. As customers expect more from businesses and individual offerings have more in common, logos have become just a piece of a company’s branding arsenal.
