We went to the restaurant so that we could feel like we were in Germany.  This place did not disappoint.  We had the mixed platter appetizer.  The sauerkraut balls, potato pancake and fried pickles were delicious.  We ordered schnitzel with noodles.  The chicken was delicious!  Included was a cream puff.  The beer was authentic Germany.  The staff was over the top attentive.  The outside garden and fire pit was tremendous.  Oh and for a real treat- get your picture behind the German lass and gent head cutout figures on the deck.  Definitely going back. This would be my first time visiting Mecklenburg Gardens and I have to say that the food is delicious and very well prepared. Inside the restaurant, reminds me of an old small Bayren style bier haus. As a German, I highly recommend this restaurant! I would give 5 stars but the location is less than appeasing. More...

We saw Mecklenburg Gardens in one of the Cincinnati guidebooks and decided to give it a try. We thought that it was not necessarily the most excellent German food, but it was homestyle and warming. Being the oldest restaurant in Cincinnati, it really felt like a trip back into the late-1800s, early-1900s. The decor was reflective of the time period, the photographs on the wall very interesting, and the owner explained some of the establishment's history well. The service, however, could've been better and the waitress more attentive (the food was also a little bit delayed). Despite being a little slow, she was very friendly and kind. We ordered the sausage & Mecklenburg samplers (both very decent) and the schnitzel with jager and artichoke sauce. I loved that the spaetzle was a little crunchy and that the mushroom gravy was tasty. The schnitzel was also cooked well. We finished off with the strudel and black forest cake, both of which were excellent ! Despite a few minor shortcomings, I loved most having the experience of being in "Old Cincinnati" and enjoying some comfort German food. More...

We pulled into the small parking lot behind Mecklenburg Gardens and made our way to the entrance, located on the corner of University and Highland Avenues. We were shown to our table by the friendly host. We regretted that we weren't dining outside in the bier garden, but the music was a little bit loud. Our server finally came to the table and took our drink order and then disappeared only to walk back and forth through the empty dining room a few times. She came back much later with my Coke and my friend's water, and eventually her margarita. We had to flag her down to order appetizers. We waited a while for those to appear.I had a Bavarian pretzel with housemade bier cheese and my friend ordered the Mecklenburg Sampler, which included Sauerkraut balls, fried pickles, and a potato pancake, served with ranch and 1000 island dressing. Most appetizers were half off during Happy Hour, which lasts from 3pm -- 6pm.Our server finally returned, awkwardly asking if we were planning to order anything else. We assured her we were there for the full meal and asked if they had any specials. She said they did not. However, fifteen minutes prior, the restaurant posted a beautiful photo on their FaceBook page of a roast beef, green bean, and mashed potato special. We kindly insisted that she go ask the kitchen about it. She returned and said we were correct. We asked how much. She didn't know. We again kindly insisted she go find out. She did. It was $18. My friend ordered it, while I asked for the Mecklenberger,  which came with french fries.Out came our appetizers; one problem -- my friend was delivered a sausage sampler (it's adjacent on the menu) instead of the one she wanted. A completely understandable mistake and after some more kind, but insistent direction, our server took it away and brought her back what she wanted. After this incident, the server seemed to relax. Perhaps she realized we weren't going to be mean to her, after all?The pretzel was gigantic and the cheese was what I expected, no more and no less.  My friend enjoyed her sampler platter a lot and I tried part of her potato pancake. I'd order that, for sure.  I also enjoyed my burger very much. It was hot, tasty, and a nice size. The fries were also piping hot. The roast beef was tough but huge. She took most of it home. All in all, we'd definitely return. I'd get another burger, for sure, and probably an order of the potato pancakes.  And I'd probably try to sit outside in the bier garden; the atmosphere out there seemed so much more fun. More...

This was our first visit here. The food was very tasty but only warm not hot. Service was very slow and disorganized. They charged extra for extra gravy which was very tacky. When they cleared the tables I noticed that they didn't disinfect the tables or chairs in this Covid pandemic. We will try again in a month or so. You would think after 150 years in business they would be more organized. More...

As far as atmosphere and food our visit was great. We sat outside in the garden which was really nice. There were only 3 other parties, and not very busy. As far as the service goes, there could be some improvement. The other tables around us were well catered to, but we were somehow forgotten. It took about 15-20 minutes to get our beer, and had to ask for water refills about 3 times before we received them. I highly recommend the pretzel and beer cheese as well as the sauerkraut balls. Thankful that they participate in Cincinnati Burger Week and are open during Covid, but I'm waiting 45+ minutes past when they said my burger would be done. Had very slow service in checking out. Seems like this place wasn't really ready for Burger Week...and maybe hasn't even properly prepared to reopen during covid with all the takeout orders.  Disappointed and won't revisit any time soon. Can't even review the food cause who knows if I'll ever get it... More...

Tonight's burger "the Rueben" was perfect! The beef patty and corned beef were superbly seasoned. It was topped with just the right amount of sauerkraut and Swiss cheese, on a rye bun. I asked for my 1,000 Island Dressing on the side. The house made Saratoga chips were a perfect compliment. Service was impeccable. More...

Spur of the moment decision to come here, since we were on this side of town. Didn't know they had BBQ. it's only on Thursdays and Fridays. I got pulled pork, green beans, and baked beans. Hubby got brisket, Mac and cheese, and green beans. to me, the baked beans had an Indian flavor, but tasty. the Mac and cheese DIVINE, but nothing fancy. the green beans had a picnic taste to them, not southern flavors like I expected.delicious meal. well worth the wait. My husband and I met friends tonight at Mecklenburg Gardens and what a lovely night it was. We sat outside in their bier garden under the grapevine trellis. Our service and experience was extraordinary. My husband and I both love German food and our meals were fabulous. The portions are large and the German beer menu was quite broad. We would much rather support local businesses like Mecklenburg, versus a chain. This is great place to meet friends, the atmosphere and tables were socially distanced. The staff was friendly and attentive and the food was really delicious More...

This is a great place to have a party.  They have a large back room and you get a lot of food for the price.  For German fare, I would say that the food is somewhere between good and vunderbar.  This is also a fine place to grab yourself a giant stein of German beer.  They often have a wide selection of German style beers. The bar situation is a little sad, however.  They have made it harder and harder to grab a spot at the bar, to the point where I would say they are flat out discouraging it.  It was small to begin with, then they cut out a large part of the bar area, before removing the bar stools in their entirety on my last visit.  Even the barkeep seemed a bit reluctant to serve us at the bar or in the bar area.  Sluggishly attending to our few requests.  It seems that perhaps they want everyone to just dine in and don't really want to operate a bar anymore.  Even if that is not the case, at the very least, that is the vibe they are putting out to the patrons, which is just not all that inviting. Sat in the dining room next to the bar.  The bar was so loud we could not hear each other talk.  Really ruined the experience.  Waitress went over the beer list.  Ordered a beer.  They were out.  Ordered another beer.  They were out.  Got the wrong sausage on the German Sampler. The reuben, sauerkraut balls, and the pretzel were all tasty.  Mock turtle soup had too much of something in it (lemon?) but I still liked it.I get the impression that MG is more a bar now than it is a restaurant.  Screaming drunk people do not make for a pleasant dining experience.I really wish Cincinnati had a good German restaurant.
