Man, I really wanted to like this place. I can't completely dislike it because the food is much more on the "meh" side of things. Here's the thing, when people say the owners and the wait staff are friendly and nice, they are absolutely correct. Nice fun hard working people, the kind of people you would keep coming back for never mind the quality of the food. Now the quality of the food is always debatable. Being the only real option for BBQ in the whole city of Lowell is going to get the attention of EVERYONE in the area regardless if they even know what BBQ food is, let alone where the next place for BBQ might be. So if someone comes in and gets a smoked meat with sweet tangy sauce all over it and they've never really had that before, OF COURSE they are going to say it's Amazing! It's really really had to screw that up. And then on the other hand, who am I to say that a rib with *this much meat *this long in the smoker *these kinds of ingredients *this much fat *this texture *lots of sauce *no sauce etc, is the superior quality. So whatever I'll just give it to you what it is I had.Ribs were smothered in sauce (don't like that) not cut (don't like that) meat was not as moist as I like but the flavor of the meat was okay. Could have been warmer too. Not much of any rub detected on it but the skin was charred pretty heavily so there was even less meat to enjoy.Baked beans were pretty typical.  No exciting new flavor profiles. I think you'll get pretty much the same taste and texture in a can of bushes baked beans. They may have had a slight teeny citrus zing to them but maybe not.Mac and Cheese was (sorry I have to say this) one of the worst I've ever had. It was quite literally boiled pasta that heated the shredded Colby Jack they dumped in it. No baking, No sauce, Not even served freshly melted. The pasta had been sitting for long enough to cool down and therefore cooled down the cheese. I don't know if this is how they always do it but judging from some of the bad reviews on here, they have a problem with consistency . But this was unacceptable. It was like eating a melting brick of cheese with a fork and sometime a flavorless noodle tagged along. We tried a chicken and waffle too. Fried chicken was dry, waffle was super dry. Tiny little bit of whatever they drizzle on the waffle was barely recognizable because we couldn't get over how dry everything was. And the cornbread was okay. Nothing special. What really got me was that they didn't have any Brisket. They said that sometimes it's a special but they stopped doing it because of COVID-19? I don't know what that means, Ever since the start of all that I've been to over 40 BBQ joints and None of them stopped making anything on their menu because of all this. The only thing that kinda sorta happened is some places raised the price on their meats a little bit in fear of the "shortage" that didn't happen. Then prices went back to normal. But they did offer us a free slice of their cakes as an apology for keeping us waiting for awhile. We didn't ask for anything or complain about the wait, we were siting for awhile though and there weren't many .... actually Anyone in the restaurant but us. So they made sure to take care of us.So I'm sad I had to give this place only 3 stars especially after offering free cake even when we didn't complain about anything. But the real deal is that I'm judging BBQ from all over New England and beyond, not just whether or not a liked the vibe of whatever random restaurant I went to last night. These gals are nice and sweet and fun and this is the only BBQ in the middle of a city ... They'll Be Fine! More...

I've been wanting this place to come into it's own. I really wanted to like it. I'm enthusiastic about local businesses adding to the city, and this is such  a great city for everyone knowing each other, and we really could use a great BBQ place. It's just not happening here. First time I went there, at the original location across town, they were out of ribs. A BBQ place. Without ribs. Seriously? Food is okay, but the waitstaff is very nice. Apologies all around. Second time there, I've waited a bit for them to get it together. Now, they're across town at the current location. Enthusiatic, I go in for some ribs and a beer. No liquor license, and they're ouf out of ribs. This is probably a year later. This takes about an hour to suss out that they are out of ribs. Again. The owner offers me a beer to make up for it. They don't have a liquor license. Go figure. Apologies again. Third time was tonight. I know local restaurants are in a bad way, so I order online at 5:30 for pick-up. They call me right back to tell me that it's going to take time to cook the ribs, and ask if I can come in for 7:30 and the whole order will be finished, ribs with sides, order of pulled pork with side of mac & cheese along with coleslaw. I come in at 7:30, call from outside rather than risk potentially infecting others in pandemic, etc. They tell me that it will an additional 15 minutes. Waiting outside, 20 minutes later, the number of us waiting for food are told it will be closer to 7:50. Now I understand that this is a tough time for everyone. We're in a pandemic. We can't eat in the venue, but can come in if wearing a face mask. The 6 or 7 of us waiting for food find ourselves in a sudden rainstorm, so we go inside to wait. Three or four orders of food go out to Grubhub drivers who arrived after us. At 8:30, three hours after I ordered food and was hungry for supper, the announcement comes out that they are out of ribs, again. Third time in three years. Third time without what I've ordered, and another apology. At this point, I've gotten more apologies from this place than decent food. However, as we're leaving, one of the waitstaff realizes that the order that has been sitting at the front counter for about 10 minutes is my order. Three years in, I finally get a chance to eat ribs from this place. A BBQ place. The ribs were good, I'll give them that. Only took 3 years to reveal this. Clearly this place is understaffed and a trainwreck of a business plan. No one knows how to set a realistic expectation for when food will come out, they run out of food regularly, have no idea what they have for inventory, and have no understanding of planning ahead with food orders. It's a sit-down restaurant with plastic utensils. Oh, and two out of the three side orders that we received were incorrect. No cole slaw, no potato salad, no explanations. Never, never again. Someone needs to come in and explain how to run a business. I was told that BBQ runs out in such places. I've never been to a BBQ place that had run out of ribs. Three for three at this place. 3rd strike. They're outta here. More...

After hearing good things, I decided to finally try this place out. Me and one of my friends got together after work but unfortunately, we didn't even get to try it. We got there around 5:25pm and put our order in at 5:30. We noticed it was busy so we expected that it would be a long wait until we got our food. We had been sitting there for about 20 minutes when our waitress walks by and asks if we wanted our check.. confused, we told her that we hadn't even gotten our food yet. Another 10 minutes go by, and again we are waiting patiently since we knew it was fairly busy, and about three tables of other parties were seated around us. After about 20 minutes, their food comes out for all of the other tables that came in after us and that's when we started to get more annoyed with the situation. The waitress walks by multiple times saying "oh you didn't get your food yet Don't worry it's coming up next!!" Excited, we go over to grab the different sauces as we were finally going to receive our food. But then after 10 minutes, the waitress brings us someone else's food and we were clearly confused. She apologizes and says ours is coming right out in a couple minutes. I'd like to make a comment that all we ordered was fried chicken and fries which we assumed wouldn't take as long. Another 15 minutes go by (total of 1 hour and 15 minutes of waiting) and we decide that it is no long worth the wait as we had already been there since 5:25 and it was 6:40pm when we decided to leave. It was so disappointing and I wouldn't suggest coming in when you're extremely hungry. Now my jacket and clothes just smell like what could have been... More...

My friend and I were really excited to sit down and try the food after hearing good things about this restaurant and ordered two simple meals (southern fried chicken & french fries) for dinner. It was a very busy night, so we were patiently waiting for our meals. However, the wait time started to increase to the point that we were waiting for about an hour and 15 mins for our food. We were getting a little annoyed that there were other parties that came in after we had already been waiting about for 15-20 mins that got their meals before us. We thought it was just really busy and they were trying to catch up on orders, but then half way through, the waitress asked what we even ordered and even brought the wrong food to our table. They continuously kept saying "it will be out soon!" But then left us waiting an additional 30-40 minutes. At this point we just gave up and left. So we went to Big Poke down the street and got our food in less than 10 mins and even got one of our meals free due to their rewards program! Last night I went to Mill City BBQ with my husband and two friends at 6:30pm. When we walked in it was at least fifteen minutes before anyone acknowledged us. I'm understanding of a wait but do expect someone to give me an estimated wait time when I  come in. Once we were seated I was still optimistic because we really are missing a good BBQ place in this area. However, that optimism didn't last long. Our waiter asked we wanted  to drink, my husband ordered a Down East Cider (the only cider on the menu) and was told they were out. Seemed pretty early to be out of any of your drink options on a Saturday night. Our friend ordered a craft beer flight, their $10 special, and his flight came about 15 minutes after the rest of our drinks. Then we ordered our food. They were out of many of the menu options. First, we tried ordering tater skins and they were out. Then we said Mac and cheese bites and those were out too. So we settled on the rib tips. My husband tried to order the brisket and was told they were out. He ordered the ribs instead, which about twenty minutes after we ordered he was informed those were also out. Still we hoped the food would be worth the hassle. We were warned the kitchen was backed up. A table near us left after waiting over two hours. Our food took about an hour. I ordered a combo instead of a sandwich because I really wanted cornbread. I should have gotten the sandwich. The cornbread was a small mini muffin size that wasn't warm and appeared to be store bought. My pulled pork was good but their barbecue sauces were less than desirable. My friend did enjoy her pulled pork  grilled cheese but was given sweet potato fries when she ordered regular fries, as was my husband. My husband's meal also was missing the cornbread. They tried to butter him up by adding rib tips to his combo but those were dry and lacking meat. On top of that our rib tip app never came and we had to ask for it to be taken off the bill. Our drinks were only refilled when we called a waiter over. The staff had many excuses for running out of many menu items, but none of them added up. They blamed a concert happening down the street but made it sound like something that happens every week. I could understand on their first Saturday but it's  been 3 months. One woman working there had an attitude about it. I don't think  it's reasonable to be out of so many things over 5 hours before you close on a Saturday night. The staff started cleaning up around us at 9pm and were sitting at the bar with headphones in as we left. If I were walking by I would think the bar was closed and walk right by to one of the other places in the area. Unfortunately we will not be returning to Mill City. More...

I wish I could leave 2 reviews for each of my experiences with Mill City BBQ. The first experience was when my husband and I went to dinner in November. Having lived in Boston for awhile we had been looking for a good BBQ place in or around Lowell. We were not disappointed! The beef brisket was AMAZING! The mac and cheese was so creamy and the collard greens were perfect. I also had fried chicken which was delicious. We had great service too which has been hard to find in downtown Lowell. You can tell it's a family business and they definitely treat their customers like family. My other experience was hosting my sister's bridal shower at Mill City BBQ. We had 44 adults with 6 children/baby this past Sunday. The shower was GREAT! Everyone raved about the food. Renay was so easy to work with! We called and booked the date and she recommended 12pm and mentioned we could do a few different ways to get people food. She also invited us to stay however long we needed. We opted for the catering menu. A week before I called and told her what I wanted. She assured me that would be enough for the number of people attending (we had pulled pork, fried chicken, beef brisket, collard greens, mac and cheese, cole slaw, and cornbread). We came slightly early to set up and everyone was so accommodating. We even had 3 people who needed special items due to dietary restrictions and Renay was quick to supply their special food. We were able to take all the leftover food (there wasn't a ton but enough for dinner the next night). I've hosted a lot of bridal showers and this was by far the easiest one I've planned.
