This place is such a fabulous hidden gem! As a Californian who moved to Boston recently, I was concerned about finding decent Mexican food in New England. I was so pleasantly surprised by La Catrina! Food is phenomenal and priced really well. Taco Tuesday is the best (so cheap)!! Plus, it's BYOB, which is really fun when you go with friends! 10/10 would recommend! More...

What I Ordered: Taco Plate (Fish & Veggie) + TamaleThoughts: Definitely authentic mexican which is worth what you're paying (which is completely reasonable). The entire menu comes straight from both mexico and the chef's heart. Very small area for seating. Probably would fit only about 12-15 people max sitting inside. Small bar that seats about 2 people. Sad I only found out about this place recently - its quickly become one of my favorite spots in the city for informal Mexican food. First off the food is excellent, my favorite dish is the pollo enchiladas with mole. The helpings are generous and really tasty, and as a bonus the prices are lower than other similar restaurants. If you eat in you also get chips and salsa, which are some of the best I've had at a Mexican restaurant in the city (no exaggeration). The salsa is some sort of warm salsa, and is just so good I always ask for more or order chips and salsa if I'm getting takeout. Probably the only drawback is that they don't have a liquor license, although after speaking with one of the owners (very friendly and often in the dining room speaking with customers) they told me they are in the process of acquiring one and hope to have it soon. I hope so too! Because I would definitely spend more time at dinner if they did have alcohol - its such a pleasant restaurant to eat in at! More...

I just ate here alone. I never actually sit down at a restaurant and eat alone but I did it, gave it a shot. It's been a weird day and I was feeling reckless. You know what? It's pretty fucking boring. I'm just stuck there alone with my thoughts, all anxious and shit. All the dark corridors of my brain leaking out and infesting my every being. It was truly an awful experience. I'll never eat a meal without watching or looking at some stupid shit on the internet ever again. Anyways, I got an al pastor burrito and it was solid dude, all creamy, flavorful and whatnot. I did bite into a giant chunk of gristle but all it did was remind me of the fucks who complain about that shit. Like sorry the chef didn't perfectly trim the giant fucking pork shoulder. Just spit it out and move on with your life. I swear some people encounter some hard fat or connective tissue at restaurants and equate it to stepping on a nail. The staff was awesome too. Even thought the place was empty they still were totally on the ball and friendly. If this place got a liquor license and started slingin drinks I'd plant my pasty white ass there every single weekend. As of now, it'll probably just be a take-out place, if I'm alone that is. We vowed to never go again but tonight, seeing it was under new ownership, we decided to give it another try and we're SOOO pleasantly surprised! The food was filled with authentic flavors and we're excited to visit the restaurant since we ordered takeout. Only downside was our delivery arrived quite cold so next time we'll either pick-up or eat-in. Hoping they get their liquor license soon! More...

Updating my review...AGAIN. Four years later and this place is under new ownership, so I feel like it is only fair I write another review and not subject the new owners to a low rating. The food is much better than I last remember. We always go for the tacos (50% off Taco Tuesdays!). I can't recommend the Caramelo taco enough (filled with steak, melted cheese, pico de gallo, and guacamole dressing). I also always get a Pastor, though Caramelo is my go-to. The portions in the taco are always generous; other places I've been to really skimp on the ingredients, but not La Catrina. The place does not seat many people, and lately when I've been stopping by, there seems to be a small crowd of people - definitely more than I have seen with the previous owners. The current owners and staff are also extremely nice and accomodating. I have lived in the area for over 4 years and just discovered La Catrina about six months ago. Some friends who are also local said this was the hidden spot to go to. Ever since it has become my actual go-to. First of all, this is an authentic regional Mexican food, so not Tex-Mex or Baja. I do not know the name of the area it is from, but I do know this is my favorite spot in all of Boston for tacos, burritos and margaritas. Every Monday the restaurant has burrito specials and every Tuesday is "taco Tuesday" with half-priced delicious tacos. This makes it a favorite destination that we often plan on for lunch or dinner.  New owner's took over the restaurant a little while ago (past 2-5 months) and they are continuing the great service and great food. Margarita Wednesday will come back once their liquor license is approved (thanks to inane MA liquor laws), but I have been told the restaurant will soon have a license for patrons to bring their own beer and wine. Whether you are just visiting the area or a local, check out La Catrina Fonda Mexicana. Your taste buds will thank you.  I personally recommend the Vintage burrito. Enjoy! More...

The avocado was also delish. My husband enjoyed the nacho libre which is essentially an appetizer but he ate it as an entree. This is my second time here, and they didn't disappoint. This place is a hidden authentic gem! I've been meaning to try this place and finally did the other day. Delicious Mexican food that is well done and offers the perfect combination of flavors. Atmosphere is dark, funky, yet colorful all at the same time. The restaurant is great for both sit down and take out - they have both high tops and low tables as well as bar seating, although the bar is fairly small. As for service, the staff were timely and prompt. Not as friendly as you'd expect, but it didn't take away from the dining experience because the food makes up for it. The margaritas are cheap and nicely made, although not as strong as they typically are. For dinner we were given salsa and chips, the chips are definitely home made, nice and crunchy and we also got the guacamole - freshly made, not fake which was awesome. For my meal, because I can't get enough avocado I had the aguacate salseado with barbacoa, and it was out of this world. The special sauce and spices provided an excellent, tasty combination of flavors. My friend got two tacos that also looked really good.
