Best Mexican food in the Boston area (that I've eaten) hands down! I grew up coming here but didn't appreciate how good it was until living in 4 other cities and traveling to Mexico! I was just visiting Boston and we came with my dad because he thought it was closing, it's not! My dad swears by the burritos but I think the enchiladas are where it's at. More...

Oh goodness, as god as my witness I don't know where to start....I ordered for delivery from.this place a couple weeks ago and the food was really good.  It was so good I went tonight.  The building is on a side street close to Alewife.  The building and atmosphere is colorful, intimate and has great wall hangings. The food was wonderful, even better in restaurant then as takeaway.  Guacamole, had great flavor with a cilantro forward taste.  I got tamales (beef, good choice) and pork which was the hands down winner with cinnamon or nutmeg.  The mole sauce was the best I have ever had.   It had some backend heat that you only got after the mouthful was finished. The absolute best part of the experience was our server Nancy!  She got just as excited as we did about trying flavors, and it was fantastic that she shared what her favorites were.  She was a joy. After a long week,  this was rejuvenating.   Thank you Nancy! I have been to Jose's a few times as it is in the  neighborhood and away from the craziness of Harvard Square.  I really enjoyed the food and that their vegetarian options include both veggie fillings or spinach and cheese.  As someone who doesn't love peppers, the spinach and cheese gave me more variety with what I could order. The restaurant is really dark inside and a lot of their seating is hard wood.  I liked the ambiance, but understand it might not be for everyone. A star was taken off because it's pretty expensive and doesn't give you huge portions.  While the food is great, I am not sure how valuable it is for going frequently.A bonus!  A parking lot so that non-Cambridge residents can enjoy without the fear of parking tickets :) More...

I told our waitress I was a vegetarian, and she let me know the rice that came with my meal was made with chicken broth and asked if I'd like a double order of beans instead. I really appreciated that! I've been to a lot of places where waiters don't know the menu well, and if I ask if something has meat they have to go ask the kitchen. Waitstaff knowing the menu is a sign of a solid establishment. More...

Hidden gem! I moved to the area recently and realized that Jose's is indeed in walking distance. When I finally decided to walk in for dinner, it made me feel pretty psyched that I chose to live near Alewife! The cozy restaurant was lively, and the decor seemed incredibly authentic. The food was incredible. AND QUICK! Everything I had was some of the most flavorful and fresh tasting Mexican food I have ever had. Each ingredient, from the ripe guac, to the non-canned beans, to the some of the BEST rice I have ever tasted, made for one incredible burrito. The meat even was marinated the right way, as the Carnitas had a smoky, cinnamon flavor without being too greasy or heavy. These folks know what they are DOING here at Jose's. And I see compaints about the "pricing". Well folks, you get what you pay for. It is pretty fair for fresh, homemade Mexican cuisine. Each ingredient really is blatantly fresh. The prices are the same at The Painted Burro or even chain spots like "Margaritas" or "Acapulcos". But Jose's blows them all out of the water. If you want a inexpensive burrito, go down the street to Anna's and eat your overrated, cheap burrito as Jose's is not for you! More...

This is really lovely authentic Mexican food. Every time we go, we leave with the best impressions. The restaurant is tucked in a quiet neighborhood in Cambridge, more of a favorite secret for the locals who don't care to share (I think I am one of those too ). The margarita menu is impressive (I highly recommend the 'authentic' one). Beware: the medium-size glass is really huge!!!! House chips and salsa and a rich nicely prepared entree menu. The music is a little loud, but there are little corners where one can carry out a reasonable conversation. More...

Before a movie at Apple Cinemas in Fresh Pond, I walked down to Jose's from the T and was thrilled by my speedy service (I had a movie to catch, folks) and phenomenal quality. The menu has many classic Mexican dishes you would see in a restaurant in Mexico itself, and the food tasted quite similar--I lived in Mexico for a couple of years, so my standards for Mexican are high! They also have some Tex Mex dishes like burritos and fajitas that looked pretty good. I was craving enchiladas with mole sauce and the trio de enmoladas perfectly hit the spot! They were filled to the brim with chicken and perfectly melted cheese, but I was most impressed by the different mole sauces--it's rare to find genuine, thick mole in the US. My mind was blown, and I have a new go to for when I'm craving Mexican (my other authentic favorite in Boston is Angela's in East Boston!). In addition to the delicious food, I was really pleased with the service. They took my order promptly, were fabulous about filling this dehydrated-diner's water glass, and even the bill was handled swiftly without me having to make a fuss. Everyone was friendly and efficient. I will be back ASAP :) More...

The salsa was good, pretty spicy but mixing the guacamole and salsa was a must do. I wish I could give this place a "5+" rating. To be candid, we are from southern California and are somewhat judgmental about Mexican food. In our world, it's the best imaginable. Our son was in a high school program in Cambridge. I walked by this restaurant every day on my way home from dropping him off. Our Lyft driver said it was great on the way to school one morning. My response, "We love the east, but we are from California and try not to eat Mexican food much out of Arizona.  Definitely not Texas."  Then we were a little desperate for a nightcap because our tired son had finished his program at 5:00, devoured a steak dinner by 8:00 in Boston (celebrating!) and went to bed. We are still on west coast time and needed to go somewhere close. I suggested an Italian place about two blocks further - perfectly fine but not too lively. Since we had already passed Jose's, and it seemed energetic, we went back. In short, the menu is fabulous. They have a full bar with anything you ever wanted - their margaritas and sangria and sipping tequila dominate. I am just a wine drinker, and they had good wines as well. My husband had great IPAs. More importantly, the people and atmosphere are great. If you want to, as they say, "Take yourself north of Boston but South of the Border," This is your place. MOST highly recommended. PS you know it's authentic Mexican when both TVs have old soccer games on--even as the Red Sox and Yankees are playing. More...

My only complaint is that their online menu doesn't match their menu in the restaurant.  My grandparents just got back from Mexico and highly recommended a dish called Chiles En Nogada.  I picked Jose's just for this dish, but when I got there I was told they couldn't make it.Other than that, I have only positive things to say.  I ended up getting the enchiladas with mole - delicious and the perfect amount of spice.  We made a reservation (highly recommend to do so) and even though we were way earlier than our reservation time, they seated us promptly.  The atmosphere is super cute - it's located in a house with super easy parking nearby, which is rare for Cambridge.  They also have the option to eat outside which is great for warm summer weather.  I'll have to go elsewhere for my Chiles En Nogada, but I would definitely come back here for everything else.
