I have known John for 37 years and worked along side of him as a fellow architect in New York City. He was a true professional and skilled architect, dedicated to design excellence and serving clients. So when I needed someone for my own personal project, whose construction knowledge I could trust and design skills I respected I immediately reached out to John B. Collins. I have not been disappointed. The project is a $250K apartment renovation in the historic West Village of New York City requiring design and construction documentation that could hold up to the scrutiny of the NYC Department of Buildings and moreover the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission. Having experience with New York City residential projects in his portfolio, John was the perfect choice. Thanks to John we have sailed through the approval process and are now under construction. We worked with John Collins on the remodel of our 1925 craftsman home in the Highlands. We redid the kitchen and main floor and added a second story with a master suite and guest room plus bath. He was recommended to us by the contractor with which we were working. He was wonderful to work with; he listened to what we wanted and helped us make our ideas in to reality! The design he created was exactly what we wanted - updated, not too modern, and with an exterior that would fit with the neighborhood. He listened to us, made suggestions based on our needs and what we wanted, and changed the design when we requested something different. John made the very overwhelming and (a bit) scary process of designing a massive home renovation something easy and enjoyable. My husband and I would wholeheartedly recommend him to others. More...

My wife and I decided to make some much needed changes to our little house: a bigger more usable bathroom, reconfigure the living room and the kitchen areas to feel more spacious, turn a garage space into a working studio space, add a few windows here and there, and redo all the floors. We were novices at house renovation so we had no idea what we were getting into. I should mention that we continued to live in the space while the work was being done. That included having a porta potty parked in our driveway and taking showers at the gym for a month. I think what saved us was that John helped manage the project and the contractor for us so we didn’t end up in a psych ward every time there was problem. He organized the work flow and kept the contractor on target with an agreed-upon time line and came up with some pretty good design fixes on the fly when the age and shape of the house seemed to defy the laws of engineering. Suffice it to say we lived through the experience, but more importantly we both can actually say we like where we live now. John helped us make it our house, not the one the Flintstones built in the 1940’s. And we came in under budget! We highly recommend John for his ideas, his expertise, and his flexibility. John was a pleasure to work with. He was very professional, had honest feedback, did everything in a timely fashion, and stuck within my budget. I was not able to go through with my kitchen renovation due to zoning issues with the county. John was helpful through the process of trying to rezone my property and made additional phone calls to the county to help me research all of my options.
