What makes a great website?
A clean easy to navigate site with a direct and understandable message about your company and/or service offerings, bolstered with dynamic imagery in a contemporary visual setting.
What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?
What are you looking to achieve that may have been missing in previous attempts to promote your business?
Describe your creative process.
An initial meeting with the prospective client either in person if local or via a phone call to understand what their immediate needs are, schedule, and a proposed budget, if they have one. Determine what the hierarchy of those needs are and begin to get a feel for what the company, small business, and/or individual based on the audience they are looking to attract and maintain. Once that's been established the work of research based on information gleaned from discussion(s) with the client, create a design direction, ending with the development of approaches to present the client.
What information do you need from a client before you can start work?
I need a true sense of what they are looking to achieve with this potential new design direction, whether a logo, print materials or web design. They should truly understand that design is a process and rarely is a quick solution. I look for them to provide visuals if possible of the type of work they like whether it be colors, imagery, layout, etc. Though I'm not interested in creating work similar to what may have been provided as samples. The proverbial "Can you do something like this in different colors" thing.
What do you love most about your job?
Creating a finished product(s) that addresses and solves the clients needs and is something we can both be proud of all the while developing a relationship that can be sustained with subsequent work going forward.
What inspired you to start your own business?
I'd worked in the corporate worlds as a Sr. Designer for many years and though I loved what I did for the company at the time, the writing was on the wall that things were about to change. Frankly, I was ready to step out on my own and Gordon Design was formed.
