Highly recommended. We have both taken puppy classes and have hired Ken and Lisa for personal training sessions with our high-strung, high-energy dogs (Aussie and Border Collie). Ken and Lisa both are patient and great to work with, and have given us techniques to use that have really been effective, particularly with our problems of leash hyperactivity/aggression and proper socialization with other dogs. When you take on private training, the cost can seem steep at first, but you have access to Ken and Lisa's expertise and can visit as needed for a full year, which makes their services very cost effective. You get a lot here, and I would recommend it to anyone with a new puppy or having trouble with an existing pet. More...

Gentle Dog Training is amazing. We have been working with Ken's son Eric on our in home puppy training and it has been a truly awesome experience. Eric is one of the nicest guys I've ever met and he clearly knows dogs so well. Our two puppies/dogs are doing so incredibly well and we continue to improve on their skills as we are working through the lessons we have/are learning. If you are reading these reviews and considering them and researching others in the Kansas City area I promise you will have no regrets. I looked at everyone in town and am so glad we chose Gentle Dog Training for our pups. Thanks Eric / Ken & Lisa! :) - John & Darcy More...

This place is amazing! Our boxer puppy was completely out of control. We did boarded training and couldn't be happier. Not only did they perform the miracle of training our dog, they also provide the tools to make you successful in your environment. Our dog now comes when called, doesnt jump on people or counters, and listens to our commands. We are back in control. Their methods work!!!! Highly recommend!! More...

I highly recommend Gentle Dog Training. Ken and Lisa are wonderful people and their approach to leading your dogs is incredibly effective. I had a very aggressive dog that would lash out and try to bite people. He was very anxious and did not trust me to take care of him so he would try to guard me and himself and become aggressive. Ken had this issue resolved after the very first session. Gentle Dog Training worked wonders for me and my dog and my future approach to training any animal. I highly recommend them! More...

I can’t recommend Gentle Dog Training enough! Our almost completely deaf rescued pup was food aggressive, hyper-vigilant, and territorial, and we were at a loss for how to help our dog be successful. We were constantly stressed any time we took her on a walk or had people in our home. Ken and Lisa have helped give us the tools to communicate clearly with our dog and we are all much more relaxed now. They are super flexible and will tailor your training to meet the needs of your family. Our pup is still spunky, but the trust we’ve built using Gentle Dog Training has made her a better version of herself. More...

Ken and Lisa are absolutely amazing trainers. We have a high drive German Shepherd and quickly realized we were not as experienced with training as we thought. After a two week board and train, and a follow up session, we are well on our way to a balanced, calm pup! And they’re fantastic at training the humans too!! I absolutely will not trust anyone else with our dogs training needs. Loved working with you guys and look forward to working with you for years to come!! Thanks so much! More...

Hands down (or should I say paws down) this place is the best dog training place around! Ken and Lisa are very down to earth, very kind and generous people that take all the time needed to get you and your dog where you need to be. I had a dog that grew to be very animal and people aggressive and it was such a relief to finally find someone that was willing to meet and work with my dog instead of telling me he was a lost cause. Within minutes of sitting with Ken on the first one-on-one session, he had my dog laying completely on his side ready to go to sleep practically in front of his feet! I highly recommend Gentle Dog Training to everyone with a dog, particularly first-time dog owners. There are so many valuable lessons that these two teach that will really make your life with your dog (or dogs) truly wonderful and stress free! Best dog training place around in my opinion! More...

I just completed the 5-week Basic Manners class with our puppy. The trainers, Lisa, Ken and Eric were excellent teachers! They willingly shared their expertise in a patient and constructive manner . I learned how to be a better coach to teach our puppy some manners. The book and videos help to reinforce the classroom learning. I highly recommend the team at Gentle Dog Training! More...

We adopted a year old pure bred golden retriever and she was wild... We had been recommended to gentle dog training by a trusted friend and boy are we glad we went through with it. Our Charli girl is still lively and energetic but she when its time for her to calm down she knows who is boss. Being able to "put her in her place" and have her stay there was alone worth the cost! Thank you Lisa for going above and beyond answering our questions and giving us a thorough understanding of how our actions are going play the biggest role on her obedience. Great work all around, I would recommend anyone to do this and follow through with what they tell you! More...

Fabulous for problem solving with dogs. They're straight forward about problems, approach, and solutions.

We were told by another reputable trainer that our 11-year-old rescue was a lost cause. That his fear aggression would end up harming one of us or our other dogs, and we should get rid of him immediately.

Thank goodness I stuck to my instinct and made another call. The call was to Gentle Dog Training. Long story short, after only 2-3 sessions, our household was completely at ease as the techniques taught us how to be the boss. Our new family member gained a new level of respect for us and our other dogs (and cat).

It was well worth the time, effort, and money. We are now better dog parents (bosses) because of it and will carry what we have learned on. Thank you, Ken and Lisa!

We called Gentle Dog Training immediately after our french bulldog bit another trainer and told us he needed to be put down because he was too aggressive and couldn't be fixed. Our frenchie had suddenly become very human aggressive towards us and other family members in certain situations and we had no clue what to do about it. After 4 in-studio sessions with Gentle Dog Training we had a completely different dog and cannot thank Ken and Lisa enough for getting us to this point. While he's not perfect, we were given the tools to help manage his aggression to the point where it's not even an issue anymore. Whether you have issues with an aggressive dog or just need some minor obedience training, this place is a life saver. More...

We are fortunate enough to be adopted by a very strong-willed blue heeler, Lucy. She is super smart & also super bossy. I found Gentle Dog Training when she was @ 5mo old & in desperate need of Training (for me, because Lucy knew exactly how to train me & had executed that training perfectly). I purchased the private training & have never regretted it. After just a few sessions (really by the end of the 1st session) there was already progress. Ken & Lisa gave me the tools to be a great coach for Lucy as well as setting her up to win through the Training. They have continued to be a support whenever I have questions or need boarding. I highly recommend them for any/all of your training needs... plus... they are just awesome people in general, as is everyone in their employ. More...

My family has used Gentle Dog Training for eight years, first with our German Shepard and lately with our black lab. Our lab is a super energetic dog that tugged on the leash and leapt at every dog we passed, leaving my hands bright red and super sore. After the first training session, Jax stopped tugging. After several sessions, he is the envy of all my dog-owning friends. I (and my hands) thank you for all the help! More...

I've known Gentle Dog Training for over 20 yrs. Ken, Lisa and Eric really know how to think like a dog (and their human customers too). These skills are really important when it came to helping my family develop a comprehensive training plan for our Alpha dog. Once we understood that we were enabling the troublesome behavior of our dog, everything changed. For the last 9 yrs now, our little guy has been the perfect dog. Thank you Gentle Dog Training. This is by far the best training facility I've ever seen. It's like a home environment and Ken and Lisa and their staff treat your dog like one of their own. The program they offer is kind and gentle and can help with behavior or training issues. I trust them with my dog and I don't trust many people with my family members. Kingsley is my boy and he came home a better dog. They have books and videos that go with their training program and always their first concern is for the dog. More...

We worked with Ken and Lisa both to help get a better handle on our super crazy cairn terrier, Baxter. We saw a change in Baxter after even just the first lesson! He had been a high-strung dog who totally ruled the house, reacted to everything, and had no problem bossing the humans around. Ken laid out some basic leadership rules as well as suggested some diet changes. That alone was enough to completely change the tone of our household.

Additionally we worked on some basic training that Baxter had not mastered in his 5 years like housetraining (that's the main reason we decided to hire a trainer), coming when called, leaving things we don't want him to touch, keeping the leash slack instead of pulling, etc. To see improvement on this, we were sent home with homework after each lesson (nothing unmanageable but definitely a commitment). We haven't perfected everything yet, but we have tools and options now for when we don't get the result we want. And have an idea of how to continue coaching him.

I used to be stressed about taking Baxter in public. He was liable to growl at another dog, pull the leash the whole time, never come back to me at the dog park, bark at me when he got bored, etc. This week, I took him out with a friend while we got coffee, and she said, "I wish my dogs acted like that. If they did. I could take them a lot more places." No one has EVER said that about Baxter before!

You can see that Ken and Lisa have a lot of love and respect for dogs and that they also have high expectations for them. I don't want to exaggerate, but their leadership guidelines have totally transformed our house. Baxter has gone from being what I sometimes considered the most annoying dog in the world to a calm and reliable companion. That's amazing.

Ken was fantastic with both of our dogs. My husband and I each had a dog when we met and they did not get along at all. They had to be muzzled around one another due to aggression. One was even having some aggression issues with people. Other trainers told me he was a lost cause, but I knew I just needed to find the right trainer. Now our dogs get along fine and even play together, plus we can have people over without stressing about how the dogs will react because we are in control. He was so good with them and gave guidance that made us successful even after the training was done. I would recommend him no matter how big or small the issue is! More...
