What’s the secret to keeping a party dancing all night long?
It all comes down to good music selection (which means paying attention to the party, the people, and knowing your music), but also its about creating an energy in the room that allows people to relax and let go. By getting them comfortable, they will dance all night long. In addition it helps to know your guests. I talk to them, ask what they want to hear, and pay attention to the crowd. They will tell you what they love and what they don't. A lot of this is done in the preparation phase of the gig - from home - carefully selecting music that will fit the gig, but still you have to always be ready to change it up at a moments notice at the venue.
How would you describe your ‘style’?
My style is not overly aggressive when it comes to interacting with the crowd. I hate when DJs are on the microphone all the time. It takes away from the music. In most cases its not about me its about the music, the energy, the bride and groom, etc. My style is to let the music do the talking. Now of course I do get on the mic when I need to (announcements, to get people to the dance floor, etc), I just don't abuse that power and make it all about me. I want the guests to have a blast without an annoying DJ ruining the party. Trust me, I've seen it done before.
What do you love most about your job?
I love helping make a great party. I love seeing people smiling, hugging, dancing, partying, and just flat out enjoying themselves.
What inspired you to start your own business?
I DJ'd for several years and was offered a job at one of the big name DJ companies in NWA. Im let you guess who that might be. I said I would consider and on my first day shadowing the bosses number one DJ I realized that the simple mistakes he made while at the gig (ignoring requests from venue owner to turn down just a bit, being way to into himself, taking any request even if it didn't fit what the bride and groom wanted) reminded that I wasn't representing myself out there. I was representing another person, actually many people. I didn't want to be grouped into who I was as a DJ all because I worked for someone. I was great on my own and decided then and there that it wasn't worth it for me. Thats when I officially became DJ Cycle.
