Amazing dance community and teachers

I have never taken a dance class before and consider myself to have two left feet, so I was really nervous about coming to a class but had it on my New Year's Resolutions so bit the bullet. Getting there: The place is not terribly well marked, but if you have Google maps you can find it. You walk into a lobby and go straight up the stair case, then check in at the desk and head into the studio. There are bleachers to the side of the dance floor where you can store your bags and water. Class:I decided on Micaya's Thursday evening beginners hip hop. I had no idea what I was doing so walked in and sat at the back of the room. Class began with a warmup without any preamble. About 10 minutes of stretching led by the instructor followed by a few minutes of ab workout. Then we went right into learning choreo. I was really nervous about getting lost, but Micaya was great and took it all very slow, with really useful explanations. I.e. when it came time to add a body roll, she spent several minutes teaching us the anatomy of a body roll instead of assuming we knew how to do one (I didn't but now I do!). We repeated the choreo a lot so it was easy to remember as we progressed. Also Micaya was always happy to stop and offer help or answer questions. She rotates the lines every few minutes, so even if you start in the back you'll eventually end up in front. Overall I had an incredible time and felt for the first time that I wasn't incapable of dancing. If you're a new dancer, would definitely recommend this as a welcoming class for total beginners that have never done dance before. I had so much fun I'm planning to go every week from now on. If you want to get that booty moving on a Saturday, then Dance Mission is your place.  You guys know I'm on the dance tip right now, and Dance Mission has been in my rotation for the past few years - on the regular even more these days (CARNIVAL is coming! !)This is an AUTHENTIC place with authentic dance classes taught by amazing teachers. Yes, I know it's been around forever, but I never want to see this place go away (like so many other authentic places here in this city - PISSES ME OFF!).   What I like about Dance Mission is that classes are smaller than ODC, and I think it's easier to see the teacher.  There are many rooms, but definitely not as intimidating as ODC.  Plus I feel like the people here are more regulars.Salsa, Samba, Afro Beats, and so many more styles you can learn. I really loved Tika Morgan's Salsa Fusion class (I think that's the one she teaches), and I never took her Reggaeton class at Dance Mission, but the one at ODC is off the hook so I'm sure it's even better at Dance Mission if she's still teaching it.  I've also taken Afro Beats, and I wanna try Samba here too.For $15 (drop-in, what!!), this is literally the best bang for your buck you can get here in SF.  See you in class! The dance brigade is a wonderful space with a lot of great classes. My only complaint is that I took a class with Tika Morgan and was very put off by the way she shamed and humiliated students. She actually mimicked a student's wrong moves. Nasty! She also talked on and on about herself. There are a lot of other great Latin and Cuban dance teachers in the Bay Area. Dance should be a joy, and students should be encouraged, not shamed. More...

I visited The Dance Brigade's Dance Mission Theater for the first time today with some friends to attend the Mittens and Mistletoe: A Winter Circus Cabaret. When we walked in, we were warmly greeted and immediately instructed on where to get our will-call tickets. The building looked quite nice and well cared for which gave me a great impression. When it came time for the performance itself, I couldn't believe what I ended up seeing. It had everything - comedy, good acting, GREAT live music, incredible acrobatics, and circus acts beyond belief! WOW! What really set it over the top, however, is that audience participation was strongly encouraged to the point where it was a significant part of the show. This is something that was new to me when it comes to this type of show made the experience for my friends and I that much more enjoyable. As a whole, I'm extremely happy but also disappointed to have discovered this venue. I'm happy because this was the most memorable play/musical-style live performance I've ever been to in the Bay Area. Why am I disappointed? Because I don't think anything will ever top my experience here! Needless to say, I'll be back! More...

Without meaning to sound biased, since my son, Ruben, is part of the show, I actually think the whole presentation was much greater than I imagined it would be. I went with expectations of watching something amateurish, knowing that a big portion of the program was to be performed by students there, like Ruben. and being aware that there was not that much time for them to learn the dance routines and the choreography, I expected to see some mistakes, and out-of-synch performances by some of the participants. But, contrary to my expectations and somewhat of a great pleasant surprise, the executions of the routines were very precised and so professional! The choreography was top shelf, man! Micaya and her staff did a tremendous job! I did not witness any miscues or anyone out of step. The entire show was truly amazing! I walked out of the theater fully entertained and feeling somewhat proud that a son of mine was actually a part of something special that I have just experienced! It also was a good feeling to know that Ruben was happy with his participation, and satisfied with his performance in it!. More...

If you want to learn and grow as a dancer, Tika Morgan is among the best teachers you can study with in the Bay Area. As a student of hers for over 4 years, I can say that I have grown immensely not only as a dancer, but outside of the studio as well. By taking her Reggaeton Fusion and Latin Fusion classes regularly, I've built more confidence, discovered how to find and to trust in my personal power, and tapped into my sensuality as a woman. Dancing with reverence and awareness has truly made me a better person as a wife, mother, and leader. It's been an incredible journey dancing alongside women who inspire me to be better and push me to new levels. Truth be told, Tika's teaching style doesn't work for everyone. You need to be ready and willing to bring conscious awareness of your body and mind as well a willingness to listen and learn. Then again, I personally believe that's a set of life skills everyone should feel empowered to find and cultivate. If you're ready to find that for yourself, study with Tika! She'll help push you there. More...

I have been attending the Bhangra / bollywood classes here for 2 months now. I absolutely love the Bhangra classes by Joti Singh and make sure not to miss any of her classes. Bollywood (mainly subbing in Joti's absence) were okay and not so outstanding.Joti starts off with warm up which includes stretching, core-workout and bhangra style relay-run. She teaches mostly on new hard-core punjabi songs in every class however, I have attended a class or two where she caught up from where she left in the previous class. There are dance-offs followed by some basic bhangra moves where everyone is lined up in a circle towards the end of the class. I will have two recommendations (not sure how feasible they are, but can be looked at as mere suggestions) : Firstly, to continue the whole song if incomplete in the previous class than learning bhangra on new song everytime. Secondly, if there are opportunities to perform somewhere / some event (annual/semi-annual) sponsored by Dance Mission Theater. This will not only provide satisfaction that a song has been completed but also give an opportunity to showcase Bhangra one has learnt at The Dance Brigade. Nonetheless, everything has been great about the class so far. The location of the studio is pretty accessible by public transport (that's what I use) but gets a little sketchy when late at night. I have always wanted to attend the Hip-hop classes - will surely take these some day. More...

ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW IS:Allen Frias - Hip HopWHY: the best choreographer + the best teacher = is all you needI've been dancing for years, and I am a great dancer (haha sorry). Therefore I am very picky! There are some famous Youtube choreographers that don't make my cut. Allan's moves are SO COOL and you just gotta experience it yourself. Stop wasting time and try it out! Some other important notes: If you are looking for a good time, DON'T go to this class:Tika Morgan - Reggaeton FusionI stayed for her class after I did Allen's class and was all sweaty already, so I think she could tell that I didn't come JUST for her, and she didn't like that. I started out standing on the first row, she told me to switch spot with 3 different people throughout the class, claiming "these people have taking her class for years and it would provide a good visual for the new people"...I'm sorry, these people that have taken your class for many years...none of them can dance. They repeat the moves great but there's no soul in it. I had to look at that for 90 minutes (cuz I was switched to the back and can't even see the instructor anymore), and sorry but it hurt my eyes! Tika somehow acts like that she is the only cultural messenger left for Reggaeton, that you must take her so seriously and prepared to be judged by her. If you don't like that, "love ya, bye!" - her exact words. Damn, who do you think you are?I will not be attending her class anymore even if you pay me to. There is a way to teach, to spread your culture, to respect the art, without being an A hole. More...

Stepping into dance mission, you are greeted with warmth, music and vibrant colors. I have been coming here and performing here for 12 years. What makes dance mission so different are the vibrant colors that surround this dance center. All the walls are like pink, green, blue, orange, and other colors... it's beautiful. None of the other studios share the same welcoming and accepting vibe as dance mission. The people who check us into classes have always been really nice to me and on a Saturday (well everyday) it's just nice to be treated well. I take Alhassane Camara's west African class and Portsha Jefferson's Haitian class on Saturdays. The live drumming is pretty amazing. I love the way they both teach... it's very different styles but I love and appreciate both. I like watching Alhassane's movement... and how he demonstrates and teaches with movement is pretty rad. I love that Portsha explains what type of dance we're learning that day from Kongo to Mae. I like that she talks about where each movement comes from and what the meaning behind it means. Both classes are pretty aerobic in my opinion. Bring lots of water and a towel if you sweat a lot like me.I can't wait for Saturday! More...

When you immigrate (like i did), it takes time to rebuild community, it takes effort to find great teachers. At DMT, I found both. My daughter was 2 years old when I first stepped into this amazing place, she is now19. Though my daughter stopped dancing, I did not stop going to DMT for shows, for events or for classes.DMT is more than "just" a dance studio, DMT is home to Krissy Keefer's Dance Brigade, and a vibrant community of artists who have blessed the Bay Area with their talent: Susana Arenas Pedroso, Ramon Ramos Alayo, Allan Frias, Tika Morgan, JoQ, Nicole Klaymoon... just to name a few. These artists have dance companies, and yet teach at every levels, which is an absolute blessing because one can learn with them regardless of experience, this is rare.I believe one could take any class at DMT and come out with having learned a lot. The studios are vast, airy, and filled with natural light. The facilities are old because the building is an old building, and parking maybe challenging, better use public transportation, but that does not deter the spirit of DMT.In my young(er) days, I danced with Chimene Pollard (no longer at DMT) who was an incredible teacher, so grounded and thorough. Then, believe it or not, I fell in love with Reggaeton ... at 46 years old. Now that sounds like a no starter right? well, think twice. Tika Morgan is such AN AMAZING TEACHER. I read the review of the lady who got hurt, and will say, though it is the student's experience and I respect it, I want to respond to it, that TIKA encourages everyone, and will not intently hurt someone. When I started I was intimidated, but as Tika wants us to grow whatever our level, she CORRECTS us,  EVERY TIME I take class I learn, I grow (as my body slows down ;0). Tika may be tough at times, and fiery and passionate, but she is also incredibly caring and engaged with her students, this is pretty special. I have been put on the spot, but i have kept at it, and keep at it, also met a wonderful group of dancers who are a dance family. If you take Tika's class, and see that she puts a strong front line, it is so that others can soak in the rhythms and moves, so that the energy flows through the class, and not because people think they are better than others. If you love learning about the origins of what we are dancing, the African diaspora, Brazil, Cuba, come, if you enjoy the fire and energy of Latin beats, come. You will have fun, learn, werk, find a supportive community, regardless of gender, body type, race, and ... age ! Be playful, be open, and you will grow - promised. More...

I took some classes here for a few months, but the main thing that I got from coming here was that Tika Morgan's Latin Dance Fusion on Tuesdays was better than paying for professional therapy. Her classes helped me get through a stupidly devastating breakup and her attitude and philosophy of being in the here, and now, and bringing your f-ing best to class - inspired me in a way no other physical activity ever has. One may take my words as an exaggeration, but for me, emotionally, mentally, physically, her instruction pushed me in ways I truly needed at the time.Yes, it probably gives you a head start in this class if you have at least a bit of dance background and I casually did growing up, but Tika is correct in stating that you'll improve if you keep coming back every week!
