Q&As

I enjoy learning about students to determine their needs and wants so I can create lesson materials that help them meet their language learning goals in an enjoyable way. It is a pleasure for me to dig into a topic with a student who is genuinely curious and enthusiastic about it and in improving his/her English to be able to discuss it more completely. I also like helping students to appreciate English idioms and fixed expressions because they are so necessary for speaking English and to analyze grammar and vocabulary so they can better understand what they hear and read along the way to becoming better speakers. Because I have spent time improving my own speaking and writing, I am compassionate and patient when it comes to helping others to write and speak more easily and confidently.

I wanted to have a way to coach and inspire students apart from meeting them in front of a classroom or in an institutional setting (though I do enjoy that too). Having a business where I can become acquainted with students one on one is a wonderful way for me to share my enthusiasm for English and to join students in exchanging ideas and sharing tips to make the learning process easier. Tutoring allows me to to tailor material specifically to the individual I am working with, something which is not possible when teaching a group of students in a classroom setting.

I am a warm and patient teacher who keeps students' interests and goals front and center. Though my education has provided me with the tools for teaching English for many purposes, i.e., business, academics and socialization, I have a keen interest in helping students learn the English they can really use to better their lives. With a wide-ranging sense of humor, I enjoy making students laugh when I can; learning accomplished through laughter seems to stick.

During the ongoing pandemic, I am giving lessons remotely. I have lots of practice at this since I spent the last two years in graduate school teaching online. I can use Zoom to meet with you or, if you prefer, we can use another platform altogether. I like Zoom on account of its functionality: I can share videos, pictures, readings, and exercises as well as an interactive whiteboard and pre-prepared presentations with my students. Should two or more people wish to sign up for a lesson at the same time, I would be able to accommodate them using breakout rooms.

Because of the infectious nature of the Omicron variant of Covid-19, I have chosen to conduct my lessons online for the time being. I am hoping this can change and, am carefully staying on top of the research and reporting from sources working to understand and explain the virus.

Services

I can help you improve your speaking proficiency at whatever level of English you speak and for a variety of purposes: an academic class or business presentation, an encounter with friends, or to communicate the needs of your daily life.

I'll use materials and techniques that are tailored to your needs, goals and interests, help build your skills, and encourage you to learn independently. Our work together will enable you to speak more confidently and others to understand you more easily.

Interactive practice during lessons will help improve your vocabulary and grammar skills, pronunciation, stress patterns, and appropriateness (using the appropriate words/expressions for a given context). Between lessons, exercises I provide are designed to reinforce the teaching so you can incorporate it into your speech.

Since oral skills do not develop in a vacuum, but require listening skills we need to focus on those as well. You will listen to a variety of videos, podcasts, YouTube offerings and other recordings based on your goals and interests.

One of the goals of English learners is to develop writing skills for business, academic, or other communicative purposes. Because I believe that the best way to learn how to write well involves learning the other three skills (speaking, listening and reading), my approach to writing incorporates these skills. When I learn why you need to write better, I will be able to construct for you, or assist you with writing projects based on those needs. We can focus on expanding your vocabulary, control of grammar, sentence structure and other elements of the written product, including how the parts fit together to form a whole.

I am ready to help you with academic and application essays, memos and presentations, resumes and cover letters, etc., so that you write better and become a better editor of your own writing.
