Counseling calls for a very active effort on your part. For the counseling to be successful, you will have to work on things we talk about in our sessions and at home. Counseling has benefits and risks. Since therapy often involves addressing unpleasant aspects of your life, you may experience uncomfortable feelings like sadness, guilt, anger, frustration, loneliness, and helplessness. On the other hand, counseling often leads to better relationships, solutions to specific problems, and significant reductions in feelings of distress. There are no guarantees of what you will experience. Some clients require only a few sessions and others require months or years. As the client, you are in complete control and may end our relationship at any time. I will be supportive of that decision. If counseling is successful, you should feel able to face life’s challenges without my support or intervention.
