The price of this cake was definitely obscene by most people's standards, but wow, the quality is undeniable.  My husband surprised me with a sheer+fresh flowers, large (20-25 servings) chocolate passion fruit cake for my birthday.  The Swiss meringue buttercream is no joke. So light, definitely allows for a flavor driven cake that is gorgeous without loads of extra sugar. The chocolate is Dandelion chocolate so, wow -- rich texture, pure flavor. Passion fruit jam is concentrated, tartness balances out the chocolate. I had to keep cleansing my palate after eating the cake with fillings to go back and taste the buttercream on its own, which is so subtle, almost a salty sweet flavor from the butter, reminiscent of a very mild cream cheese based frosting.   And the execution!  I am a very novice home baker, and when I cut into this cake, the precision of the layers and fillings was stunning.  I cannot wait for another special occasion when we can justify a cake like this so we can try another flavor! I brought Butter&amp; to a dinner party and it was a hit! Before finding Butter&amp;, I researched other bakeries including Noe Valley Bakery, b. patisserie, and Pie Society but they all required you to order days in advance. I was able to order Butter&amp; just a day before and I'm so glad I did! Found this place online while searching for a great cake for a special birthday. Took a chance on their Passion Fruit and Chocolate cake and am soooo glad! From start to finish -wonderful and responsive customer service, beautiful packaging complete with instructions, personalized note and candle. We got the berry flavor and had really high expectations for the price and hype around this location. We were a bit disappointed as it did not have a wow factor and was a bit underwhelming when compared to Sprinkles Cupcakes cakes and Whole Foods cakes. Specially because of the specific instruction to leave sitting out for 3 hours before serving. Bought a medium size birthday cake online 2 days in advance. The process is smooth. They sent me texts once after I order and again after everything is confirmed with instruction on how t I get the cake. The cake is a bit pricey, but you get what you paid for. A very tall prestige looking cake that is great for Instagram. In terms of taste, I got the chocolate passion fruit. It's a bit on the sweeter side and the chocolate and sponge is heavy and thick. You cannot eat much of it in one setting. The cake was recommended for 14 ppl, but I fed 17 with 1/3 left, because it's too sweet and heavy for our taste. However, I brought it home afterward and eat some every now and then the few days following, and I find it delicious and pleasing as a comfort food. Rating:Taste: 4/5 It's a bit too sweet for my taste, but it definitely is a good tasty cake. It is good to eat in small portion, but it's very heavy and thick. The cake was so beautiful and delicious. As instructed, we left the cake out to come to room temp before serving.. let me tell you. .Chocolate &amp;Hazlenut... perfect combo with the light brown sugar cake.Backstory.. I needed a cake for my cousins wedding in SF. They are the simple and modern type. Earthy vibe was their theme for their reception. Butter&amp; came through. Initial thought when I first opened the box, fondant all over. It looked so well put together, guests thought the cake was inside of this tube. The cake was secured onto the board, I held onto the box for dear life through the potted holes through the lovely SF neighborhood. Lol Surprise surprise, cutting the cake was easy. Got the Large sized "Ridges + Flowers" style wedding cake in Tonga Vanilla. We selected this flavor via a cake tasting box eons ago, and were not disappointed. Me, my groom, and 90% of the wedding party/guests loved it :) (can never be 100% lol). The buttercream was amazing, and the cake was not too sweet. The flavor is light enough not to feel too stuffed. Service wise, the staff is very responsive. I had originally requested to order an American heirloom cake stand after restock, and the team let me know when this became an option. They also allowed me to upgrade our original order of a "Medium" to a "Large" easily through their chat function on the website. Emailing is also a great way to reach them.  The team is also very accommodating. We ordered "baker's choice" flowers but gave them our wedding colors for reference in case these colors were available. The team did not need to provide these colors, but they did which was very kind. Thank you!Pro tip(?) Our wedding cake for butter&amp; was just perfect. I ordered it less than a week prior to our elopement. When I needed to change the time of delivery the team was incredibly responsive. The actual cake was AMAZING! We got the sweet cream and roasted berries. I don't think I have ever tasted a better wedding cake.  The cake was light and the cream frosting didn't taste heavy. Butter&amp; made our cake for our wedding day. It was so delicious, everything we wanted &amp; more. We chose the small two tier cake that serves 30-35. The bottom cake was sweet cream + roasted berries &amp; the top cake was hazelnut + chocolate. I think it served way more than 30-35 portions but we're not complaining! We did do the sample tasting first and that's when we chose our top 2 flavors. Ordering online was super easy and they have such beautiful cakes. My 4 year old is allergic to nuts but he really enjoyed the sweet cream + roasted berries so I asked them if we could do 2 flavors. The people behind Butter&amp; were very quick to respond when I had any questions. We originally had a reception set for the city and when plans changed, they were still able to accommodate delivery for a little bit more. TLDR; The presentation of the cake is gorgeous but unfortunately the flavors/ taste are somewhat mediocre.I ordered their berries and sweet cream cake for a birthday for someone who's not a big fan of desserts that are too sweet. I totally agree with Amy D.'s review: the cake is pretty but there were too many issues with how it tasted: the cake itself had a cornbreadlike gritty texture, and the buttercream frosting had a very filmy too-smooth texture, like room temperature margarine, and felt very unsuitably paired with the gritty denseness of the cake base (as if the layers of cake and frosting never came together into a cohesive bite). Flavor overall was lacking outside of the nice touch of berry jam; the buttercream frosting tasted only of butter and the cake didn't really taste like anything, just slightly sweet. I am someone who can eat a whole cake by myself (not exaggerating) but unfortunately had trouble finishing my slice because the textures just gave me a weird mouthfeel and I felt meh about the taste.The layers are neat and the gold foil on top as well as the packaging of the cake is gorgeous, and it looks like the designs for custom cakes are no doubt worth it; but for their 'standard' naked cake I'm not particularly impressed at this price point ($75 for a small!!!! Damn). I'd definitely consider splurging for another cake from butter&amp; for a special occasion celebrating a coworker or friend that loves minimalist design and the naked cake aesthetic AND doesn't care as much about how it tastes, but for anyone who fancies themselves a more serious dessert connoisseur, I would have to look elsewhere. These cakes are amazing!  Don't expect a typical grocery store or warehouse produced cake. These are rich and dense flavor bombs! We recently had the special holiday flavor Speculoos and Red Current for Christmas in the Exposé medium size.  It was beautiful with the gold leaf lettering and impressive layers. Although it may not look it, it easily served 16 people using the Butter&amp; suggested grid pattern to cut it. We've also tried many of their other flavors and honestly haven't found one we didn't like.  And in case you're wondering, they travel well. Our daughter brought ours to us on the airplane! The cutest quaint cake shop I've ever come across! The designs of all their cakes are very minimalist but their gold lettering and cleancut frosting create a very aesthetic feel. They have so many different designs available and they allow you to customize the writing on top. Butter &amp; crumble also provides delivery to save you the trouble of picking it up from the dogpatch neighborhood!We went with the small size birthday cake design which is meant to feed 8-10 people with the roasted cream and berries flavor. 3.5 stars overall but rounding up for how beautiful this cake looked. I've been coveting a Butter&amp; cake for a while now, and was so excited to finally have an opportunity to try one. My cousin placed an order on their website a few weeks ahead of time, and didn't have any issues picking up the cake from their studio in the Dogpatch. You can pay an additional fee if you'd prefer to have your cake delivered (only select Bay Area cities at this time). However, I did see other photos and the cake looked more moist, so we could have received an overbaked cake?
