Q&As

There are several things I love about my work! First of all, I get great satisfaction from helping someone conquer a troubling problem, whether it be long-standing depression, disabling anxiety, or gaining control over a problem or behavior that was causing them problems. It's wonderful to be a witness to the growth and change that comes about. Second, I greatly enjoy working with the fantastic team at Brain Health Northwest. Although I very much appreciate their intelligence and warmth, they are also funny, outgoing, and a joy with whom to work. Third, I love bringing the fruits of this amazing field -- clinical neuroscience -- to bear in helping people solve real-life problems. Our ability to harness the power of the brain to, in many ways, heal itself (with a little help!) is, I think, a profound game-changer and has lead us to change our entire perspective from "mental health" to "brain health." The bottom line is that healthy brains produce healthy thoughts, feelings and behavior. When we work to produce healthy brains, those are the outcomes.

Both of the principals at Brain Health Northwest (Richard Packard and Rogene Eichler West) had been working, individually, for many years, without knowing one another. Dr. West was in the academic world as a professor of neuroscience. She had been doing research, publishing, and teaching ways to harness the brain to solve problems, but wanted to work more directly with people in a clinic. However, she had been primarily a research scientist and not a clinician. Dr. Packard has been a clinical psychologist for 30+ years. While using conventional evaluation and treatment methods, he had also been learning about the advances in clinical neuroscience and believed they could be enormously beneficial, as well as be able to address problems in ways conventional methods could not. However, he is primarily a clinician and not a research scientist. While both had lived and worked in the Seattle area for many years, they did not know one another. They met in a chance encounter at a conference in Ohio, spent much of the next six days talking and picking each other's brain and discovered that, in addition to really liking each other, we could also help the other learn new knowledge and skills. After about a year of excited discussions (some of which gravitated to our other passions of technology, music, dogs, and living in the Northwest), we decided to formally join our interests and form Brain Health Northwest. We spent much of the first two years developing and revising our methods and model and are now offering our products to the broader world.

When someone chooses us, they get not just one clinician, but an entire team! While we each have a common core set of knowledge and skills, we also have our unique skills and background. Dr. Packard has over four decades of experience in a variety of settings, working with a wide variety of problem areas. He has won awards and recognition from his colleagues for both his scientific expertise and clinical skills. Dr. West is a brilliant scientist and a "Renaissance Woman" with wide-ranging interests in neuroscience, software engineering, music, and other fields, too. She brings a penetrating, ordered mind to understanding the nuances of what it takes to promote a health brain. Ms. Moergeli is a warm, compassionate therapist with a sound foundation in neuroscience. Her own life includes a wide-ranging experience base that has taken her to many places and an understanding of what makes for a happy, fulfilling life. After spending 20+ years in the technology business and working for companies "everyone would recognize", Mr. Imber decided to return to his original passion of clinical and physiological psychology. He is currently completing his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology, emphasizing physiological psychology and neuroscience. He is already quite accomplished with biofeedback and other clinical skills and is particularly interested in how to achieve peak performance and maximize our potential. Marlaina Anderson is a licensed mental health counselor with a wonderful set of skills working with children, adolescents and adults. She is a warm and engaging therapist who integrates an excellent set of skills in problem-solving, evidence-based therapies with clinical neuroscience.

We view our mission as bringing everything we have to bear in helping our clients achieve their goals!
