I am a 52 y/o female and am going through menopause and had changes over the years to my body that I was not ok with. I have worked out consistently since I was 16. I was in the Army, and continued my workouts throughout the years. I have had 3 children along the way as well. I thought I was consistent and doing everything right. On the weekends I would let loose with my food intake and alcohol, thinking I was ok and would drill down during the week. However, I could not get rid of my love handles and extra body fat. Then I met Dan and started the “nutritionist journey.” Damn if I was doing it wrong. Now, I eat 5 times a day, I understand what foods should be consumed and when, and what shouldn’t. I have learned compromises to make with myself when I go out to eat and when I drink. In 12 weeks I have lost an inch on my waist and 1.5 inches in my hips. My clothes fit so much better and I feel better overall! Lots of energy for workouts and thru the day. I threw away my scale a couple years ago, and only measure. I cannot recommend Basics and Beyond as a nutritional consultant and personal training service more. Dan and Nathan listened first, then formulated a plan to help me get control over my eating and my health without making me feel ashamed of being a larger person. Even though I considered myself a "healthy eater", I still couldn't budge my weight. I was stuck. What I really needed was accountability, and someone knowledgeable to tweak my food choices. So I signed up for Basics and Beyond's Nutrition Coaching program, and in just one month I have lost 2 inches in my waist and 4 inches in my hips! I am very pleased with these results. I enjoy getting new ideas for meals. My coach has trained me to recognize my mindless eating, and how I unknowingly had too many "extras". I contacted Dan as I was looking for a nutrition coach who could help me with consistency and commitment to healthy eating and keep me from getting off track. My results from working with Dan exceeded my expectations and his advice significantly contributed to losing over 20 lbs. in the first month of working together. Dan had been a great resource for ideas on how to maintain healthy eating in a consistent fashion. His advice is not cookie cutter but client focused and personalized. I had tried “eating healthy” many times before. I would always burn our eating the same things over and over again. Dan’s system has been a game changer for me. Having the grocery list at the beginning of the week, letting me know exactly what I need to buy is so easy. I’m never overeating because I have exactly what I need for each meal and it’s filling. How do you begin to write a review, when the man about whom you are writing, cannot be captured by words alone? Dan DeFigio has been in my life, as my trainer, my therapist(physical and mental--sorry about that Dan), my nutritionist, my life coach, and, above all, my friend, for 28 years. Dan has taken my broken body(from numerous back surgeries), and strengthened me/conditioned me, to be able to have a life again. Free of pain. From a bad fall to a great half-marathon.When I first reached out to Dan, I lamented how little time I had. Travel, work, kids, work. I was working the equivalent of three jobs and traveling a lot. I knew I needed to work out, but I was afraid of so much. I started working with my trainer, Arren. A perfect match for me. Encouraging, consistent, but creative in the ways he helped me get through those hard first few weeks. Then the worst happened (or so I thought).I fell and broke my wrist in September, just a couple of months after I started. The bad kind - surgery and pins and plates BUT because of Arren and Dan and the incredibly supportive set up of Basics and Beyond, the experience helped me in so many ways. I figured out how resilient our bodies are, how consistent work really can make a difference, and more. Oh, and to get use of my hand/wrist back, it meant at least a couple of hours a day doing exercises. Funny how a time excuse can be removed quickly when your livelihood is at stake.I went from that fall to a new commitment to making sure I took the time to take care of myself. I signed up for a half-marathon in October and used my rehab time to also start training. Arren helped me prepare and train in the gym, he helped me navigate how to go from nothing to 13.1 miles in 3:30 or less, and he walked me through how to eat and prepare for the actual day. Not only did I go strong the whole race, but I now have full use of my hand - it's actually the one holding that medal! Thank you Dan, Arren, Tim, and all the team. I was getting after my Dad who is 78 telling him there is no status quo if you aren’t improving your getting worse, he needed to keep moving and to keep his mobility so he could take care of himself. it wasn’t long before I realized I needed to listen to my own advise at 47 I was in the worst shape of my life. I've suffered from a lower back injury since my mid-twenties. I've had regular chiropractic care for decades. After nearly 30 years in the corporate sitting position, I have accumulated chronic painful conditions in my lower back and right shoulder. After four visits to two orthopedic doctors, a cortizone shot, chiropractic treatments 3x per week, a month of completely useless physical therapy, bottles of Advil and over $3,000 wasted, I started with Dan DeFigio at Basics and Beyond. I have had 4 sessions with Dan. I am nearly pain free in my back and my shoulder is almost back to normal. Dan's knowledge of muscular physiology is immense, detailed and practical, but Dan's application is artful and intuitive. Dan treats the underlying root causes of problems - not just symptoms. I've been a gym regular for almost 40 years and have seen hundreds of personal trainers in action. Dan is so far beyond any trainer I've ever seen, that the title of "trainer" is inadequate. I work with Dan DeFigio. Absolutely awesome. He is much more than a trainer. Think coach, rehab. Specialist , stretching guru, nutrition savvy, motivational. .. the trainer's trainer. After almost 5 years of living with pain on a pretty regular basis, I did some searching and reached out to Basics and Beyond in the summer of 2017. I had developed a SI Joint problem from years of sitting and working at a computer for way too many hours each day. I’ve been working with Angela for a bit over 6 months now and the entire experience has been awesome. I am for the most part totally pain free with just very occasional moments of pain/discomfort, which seem to be a direct result of me falling behind on my exercise and spending too much time working at the computer.Previously I had seen good chiropractors and massage therapists, who were all helpful, but nothing has helped nearly as much as working with Angela from Basics and Beyond and getting my body in shape. I’m feeling much stronger, more energized, and more stable, plus there’s the added bonus of looking better too ;)Not only am I learning how to properly work out and getting in shape, but I’m also learning about my physical ailments (turns out I have a couple), proper posture and things I can put into practice in my day to day. Angela is extremely knowledgeable. I learn something new with each session, which I attend 2 days per week. The best way to get the results you desire is 1-on-1 personal coaching. Group exercise is fine for making you work hard, but if you're like most folks, you'll get better results from a personalized exercise and nutrition program that is tailored to your exact needs and abilities.
