They only care about money and not their customers. The staff lie like it's second nature. You will get many promises, only to be told later no they can't help you. Joe Spencer, Manager, will say he will call you back, but he never will. He can't act like an adult and avoids conversations at all costs. The facility is run down and you can tell the team and owner don't care. They do the bare minimum. Penny Mahon, owner, will pretend to care. She acts like she wants to help and then will ghost out. It is clear where the staff gets their lack of care and avoidance of calling customers back. It is apparent that the owner is not aware of what goes own in her business. Joe is the only manager allowed to make decisions but he refuses to talk to customers. Don't waste your time or money with a company that has no care for the pets or pet owners. More...

I have never asked for a refund since I was told no in February 2020.-You assistant manager said she would allow me to use my days. Milo our dog was very stubborn, jumping on everyone, barks a lot at everything nonstop, don’t return when called & pulled on leash.
We decided to bring Milo for training at Barks 5th Avenue. We explained to Oscar on our concerns and he gave us a plan of what we will work with Milo weekly.
After the 1st week, we could see some changes in Milo. Milo followed instructions and we saw good progress.
On completing the training session..Milo does not jump anymore, does not bark much, come when called and the biggest achievement from this training is that we walk Milo without a leash.
Our neighbours were very surprised with Milo’s changes and everyone was amazed with what he has changed to. Omg this is the best !!!

My puppy Willow went for 3 weeks for training. I noticed right away on my first visit with her that she was learning quickly to behave and follow commands. I just picked her up today from training and she’s a different dog. She doesn’t try to chase buses anymore. Before training she would bark like crazy and lunge towards other dogs. Today, she walked pass two dogs by our apartment and listened when I told her to “leave it”. I highly recommend Barks 5th Avenue and Oscar is the best! More...

zero stars if i could. God forbid your flight gets cancelled or delayed. they won't let you pick up even 15 minute late with ample call ahead. this place is a dump, ugly yard, ugly building. will never be coming back. thank the effing lord i managed to get there in time to get my boy, otherwise i would've been forced to pay for another night AND their food because i didn't pack for an extra day that was ENTIRELY out of my control. What an amazing place! Very mom and pop vibe with super attentive customer service. I just competed a 6 week dog training course with my 7 month old Lab/Shepherd mix who can be a real handful. No more! Oscar the trainer, is AMAZING! My dog Ollie can now sit, down, stay, leave it, heel, place, touch. Oscar is so knowledgeable and really customized what my dog and I needed. He even does board and train- we worked in the same room so I was able to see what he can do with those dogs and it blows my mind. We boarded both my dogs for 5 days- they were able to participate in day care and get groomed upon our return. My chihuahua has a very tricky nail but they were able to trim it perfectly. Our 2 dogs were at Barks for a month long training program. They're older dogs (3&4) so we were concerned that they wouldn't be able to learn much. We were very surprised at how much the learned and how happy they seemed to be there. Prior to training they were not fun to walk together at all, and wouldn't listen when they were together. Oscar was great at training and socializing our dachshund Han Solo. Dachshund are stubborn but Oscar found a way that worked with Han. He always called or texted me back on how Han was doing. this is late post. My Giant Schnauzer Ty did 3 week board & train this past May . The training was Soooo worth it. At the time of training, Ty was about 5 1/2 months. You could definitely see & appreciate the training. He listens to commands he was trained to listen to. I am able to leash walk him w/o pulling. He is able to walk in front yard leashless. He "stays" when prompted. Ty is still hyper, but definitely not as he was b4 training. Ty is 70+lbs, so we did not want Ty jumping up on family or visitors. The training surely cut that down 95% of the time. U have to reinforce the commands daily. I highly recommend Oscar for training. The 3 week board & train is definitely worth it. This groomer is absolutely fantastic. My Aussie is 1-1/2 old and still has issues with new people and places. The staff were extremely kind, understanding and gentle with him. We shave him during the summer and they always do an excellent job at making his coat smooth and even. His fur is normally super long and thick so shaving him is quite a task. I just completed a series of training at Barks 5th Avenue with Oscar. I took in two rescue great danes last year and they have put me through several crazy situations. Ive never had to seek formal training with any of my pets, but these dogs were beyond even my ability. Oscar laid out a comprehensive plan with flexibility to accommodate my insane and unique work schedule. Both girls had their own challenges to overcome but they both graduated yesterday! I will be taking him to the vet tomorrow to have him checked out. They also didn't call me to tell me he hurt himself or that an incident happened. If you couldn't handle my dog, I would have cut my trip short and picked him up.Shame on you to have hurt an innocent animal. He is only 1 year old! We have a 10 month old Rhodesian that was going wild. We brought him to Oscar for a 3 week training “boot camp” and WOW what an amazing difference. We have a happy, energetic well behaved pup now! I wanted to wait a day or two to review because I was extremely curious on how Doc would behave at home with distractions ( our other dog) versus with Oscar. All I can say is Thank You Oscar! He listens, he responds to his commands on and off leash and he is doing so good. We are doing our training daily and have had a bump or two that was expected but overall I’m so completely impressed with the difference in our wild child! We brought our 6 year old dog Charlie here for their 3 week board and train program. She is a sweetheart but had trouble with resource guarding and overall obedience when others were around. Ultimately, we found it appropriate to enroll her in this program when a friend, who has a dog with similar issues, referred us. We cannot express how grateful we we are for Oscar and the Barks 5th team for making her a more obedient and overall great dog. Before, walks with her were tiring due to her pulling like crazy. She now keeps pace with us (with no pulling whatsoever) and looks for our queues on when to sit, wait, stay and heal. She also no longer jumps on people when they first come in the door with the command of “place” which is a cot she obediently sits/lays on when we anticipate an event that would over excite her. We have already referred Barks 5th to many family and friends who have asked about our experience. We will definitely be bringing Charlie back here for boarding and grooming in the future! More...

I am very picky owner when it comes to facility and dropping off my animals! We went for training consultation and signed up for classes! Trainer we met was very helpful and friendly! Sam is very hyper puppy and never walker on leash, but once we left Sam was walking on leash and this is just the beginning Today I took my 6 month old English sheepdog in for bath and very pleased with the experience and the facility, the staff was friendly and helpful! They abuse animals here. Don’t bring your dogs here. I sent my dog here for the overnight training well fed and slightly overweight. At the first check up on his progress he had a gash on his snout but they never called to tell me he hurt himself from “pushing his nose against the kennel.” Then at pick up seemed as he didn’t learn anything so they asked to keep him an extra week for free. My grand dog, Sophie, graduated today after 8 week stay for behavioral training. She is more relaxed with noises, people and more respectful of her family and a much happier girl. We missed her but we loved her enough to get her help with anxiety and lack of impulse control. Oscar is an amazing trainer and I applaud his work with Sophie. I'm so happy about the results. I was a bit hesitant because it is hard to work with separation anxiety, but my dog came back better than ever. I bought a remote collar And worked with my dog for a couple of weeks to make sure that he was OK while I was gone. I was able to monitor him with the camera while I left my apartment. I decided to use Barks 5th for training. My dog is 10 years old, and I made it very clear that the separation anxiety, kennel training, and being able to calm her down when she gets excited are my issues. She already knew all the basic commands. The trainer said multiple times he would be able to fix these issues with the 3 week training class. After the first week of training I came in to see my dog, and clearly nothing had changed. She was over excited and the trainer was not able to get her under control. Fine, there's still two more weeks of training. So, I was expecting to pick her up after the third week. I called and tried to get ahold of the trainer, no call back. Two more times I called to schedule the end of training class, and finally received a call back on the last day of training, and was asked to leave her for a few more days. The next week, I came to pick up my dog, and she immediately got out of control when she saw me, and the trainer was not able to get her under control. She was slightly crate trained, but still screamed every time we put her in the kennel. It took 3 more weeks of training at home to finally get her crate trained. The trainer also suggested I get a "vibration" collar for my dog to help control her when she gets anxious. Isn't that what I just paid Barks 5th for? Overall, I feel scammed, and wish I had not used Barks 5th Ave. this was very expensive (over $1,600), and i got nothing out of it, even though the trainer said he could handle the training. PLEASE, USE ANOTHER TRAINING CENTER FOR YOUR PET! Do not use Barks 5th!!! More...

Seeing the joy on a dog owner's face when they watch their dog graduate our training program is priceless.
What inspired you to start your own business?
A love of dogs, the desire to do things the 'right' way as opposed to many of the ineffective/inappropriate methods commonly utilized by the big corporate guys made us branch out on our own.
Why should our clients choose you?
At Barks 5th Avenue, we train using POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT. We do not insult, attack, severely punish, or hit dogs. We believe that by praising and rewarding dogs, they (like people) are more likely to perform as we request. Over the decades, we have found that this is the most successful method. Scoldings for inappropriate behavior are light and appropriate, with a focus on REDIRECTING the dog's attention and energy towards the positive task, instead of focusing on the negative.
One on One Private Training
Group Classes can be distracting, and largely ineffective for most forms of training communication. Therefore, we believe that individual attention is much more effective when it comes to training pups and their owners! Meeting once a week for an hour in a private session with your Trainer allows you to focus on the training goals established for that week, and to really dig into the particular task. We even assign homework! :)
Board & Train Program
Our most popular service, the Board & Train Program has your pup stay in-residence with us at our facility on FM-1960 for a set period of time (usually 21 days), during which they undergo the entire curriculum of our General Obedience program. Your dog will learn to sit, heel, down, come, stay, place (a favorite amongst clients), 'off', 'leave-it', and many other commands. At the end of the program, you will come in for your pup's graduation and Transfer of Leadership, where your Trainer will teach you all of the commands your pup has learned, and your pup will learn to obey those commands from you as you practice with your Trainer!
AKC Canine Good Citizenship Practice & Certification
Our Trainers are AKC-certified to conduct the practice and certification training for your pup to receive their AKC Canine Good Citizen or S.T.A.R. Puppy certificate! Just ask your Trainer for details!
Puppy Preschool
Generally geared towards puppies 11-15 weeks of age, this special 2-week program focuses on potty training as well as an introduction to basic general obedience commands. Get your puppy started on the right foot with this program!
