This store for me was like being a kid in a candy store. If you have never been here plane on staying for a wile. There is so much to look at. Its really a one stop shop for all of your costume needs. I found the silver boots & lip stick shades I have been looking for. Their brand of make up is on point. I can't wait to go shopping here again. The staff was super helpful and really nice. More...

I go here last minute every year a week before Halloween: They are never out of anything! It's amazing how they keep such a great circulation of inventory around this time of year! This is my definite go to place for that hard to find brush, color, contact lens or piece of costume you need! I'm thinking of throwing a costume party on my birthday and telling everyone to go here for their stuff!!! More...

This should be a Yelp review.

Last night, one of my favorite stores in New York City, Abracadabra NYC, was hosting one of their private events, exclusive to individuals involved in nightlife.

Abracadabra is this magical costume shop. Think Diagon Alley in abysmal Manhattan. But it's so much more than that. There is a wonderful makeup department. Very high end costumes to rent downstairs, extensive hat and wigs section, horror props everywhere. Did I just see a fucking cat running around? Holy shit, there's a magician Literal visual overload. It's one of the places I go whenever I need inspiration.

I'm broke right now, but there is always something to see here. Can't live as lavishly as I'd like right now (garbage person) but I wanted to see if I could score any cheap Ben Nye eye shadow to play around with.

I invited one of my extremely talented friends to join me. He's an established body painter, incredible make up artist and he was just hired to work on Broadway! And when we got there the place was packed! Queens out of drag, designers, artists, performers everywhere. Merlin the cat didn't know what to do with himself.

I'm greeted and handed their, extensive, list of items for sale. Makeup 50% off, buy 1 get 1 free costume pieces, wigs 40% off, buy 2 get 1 free props, free gifts with any purchase! Etc. And there at the bottom I see it...

"Scavenger Hunt: hidden throughout the store are three $100 gift cards"

I'm broke.

Verruca needs that Golden goose, Daddy.

One had already been found in the Zoltar fortune teller machine.

I want that golden ticket.

I wish there had been a film crew following to document the frantic super market sweep style panic I burst into.

Before I knew it, I was waist deep in a bathtub filled with rubber snakes, turning over magician caps in the hat department, pulling swords out of umbrella bins, carefully strolling through the corsets, elbow deep in fake intestines at the deli counter, flipping through packaged princess dresses in the children's department, turning books upside down, is it underneath that gargoyle? IS IT TIED TO THE FUCKING CAT

I was downstairs in the pirate section when I heard someone found a second gift card.

I had been searching for over an hour and was beginning to get discouraged. Also the event wasn't going all night and I still actually needed to shop.

So I wandered over to the make up counter, making casual conversation, my retinas circling like mad eye Moody, trying to play it cool as my eyes darted all over the store like a compass spinning around and around trying to locate North. WHERE THE FUCK IS WALDO?

On the make up shelf, taped right next to the Ben Nye eye shadow, divine intervention stared me in the face, my golden ticket. I almost shat.

Gift card in hand, and practically everything in store at discount? Please believe me when I tell you the next hour of my life I felt like a child who had just won one of those Nickelodeon toys r us shopping sprees. The sky was the limit and I could purchase anything I didn't need. Marie Antoinette wig? Maybe! Thor's Hammer? Sure! Giant rat? Well I already have one of those...

I sensibly went with a new steel boned corset.

You see, Abracadabra (on 21st St) is one of those rare places in NYC where the outside world ceases to exist. You check your problems at the door. The staff is so incredibly friendly and helpful. I can't tell you how much advice I have received from them or how many times I have raced there for assistance after a project had gone wrong. They have helped elevate my drag to a level I can never fully repay. They genuinely want to help people find what they need and show them things they didn't know they could have or accomplish. I've spent hours there just chatting. Every. Single. One. Of. Them. Is so cool and polite I wouldn't be surprised to learn they're aliens from the future or robots in artificial flesh meant to make us as happy as possible.... And with the type of store it is, it's believable. Like the twilight zone... But with less death and a happy ending.

One time I lost my phone there, and they contacted me on Facebook to tell me they had it!

Please, if you're in the entertainment industry you need to check this place out. Even if you just love Halloween or camp, there is something there for everyone. Go support local business, please keep their staff well fed.

And while you're there, make sure you purchase a tube of Avant Garbage's exclusive liquid lip stain!
