About

We are a family friendly wedding and event DJ company. We have thousands of songs from many genres over the last 60 years but you will never hear the F bomb or other profanity come through our speakers.

I generally like to play a mix of very well known songs from a variety of genres but will take direction from you as to what, if any, you want me to emphasize or not play.

Family friendly is AWESOME!!! David as a DJ is the best! He was professional, cordial and truly down to earth! Everybody at Marcella, my wedding truly enjoyed it. His service as a DJ! Thank you so much David and you did an excellent job as the wedding was bilingual Spanish in English! Even though you did not speak Spanish, you were able to play the correct songs! We cannot say enough good things about working with DJ Dave. He was always courteous and professional and was genuinely interested in what we wanted to do. He went over and above the call of duty to ensure that all the musical pieces we requested were available and worked with us to present a truly memorable experience. My husband and I host a family-friendly fundraising event every summer which supports various causes that benefit children locally and abroad. Our event is structured around an easy bike ride for all ages and followed with a big party in the park, complete with kid zone fun activities. In the past, we've had local bands come out to play and they were okay, but some were dull and stuck to one genre of music, while others were too loud and obnoxious! We know how music really sets the mood of an event so this year we really wanted to make sure the songs were appealing to all ages. We found David from A Family Friendly DJ and right away he asked great questions to better understand our event and our audience. We asked him to play a mix of older and current hits, but nothing that would be offensive. We need our guests to be in good spirits to support our cause! He made us feel very comfortable that all his music is screened for offensive language and that he would be able to put together a great song list from his extensive library to keep the atmosphere happy and light for the entire event. Well, David delivered on his promise. We actually had people come up to us after the event and ask for his contact information, that's how memorable his playlist was. He did a really good job of mixing modern tunes with some of the best 80s and 90s songs - I don't think there was a single song people didn't know and couldn't sing along with. We didn't necessarily have a dance floor, it wasn't that kind of event -- we just needed great background music while people partied and played -- but everywhere I looked during the event people were kind of bobbing and dancing in place or singing along. Even the teenagers! I know for a fact the good food and the good music and good vibes kept people at our event and helped them generously donate to our cause. I am more than happy to give A Family Friendly DJ a fantastic review for contributing to the success of our event. Thanks so much! More...

Q&As

Every event is different. Different people with different tastes and different expectations. First thing I do is make sure I am the right DJ for you. Not every DJ is right for every event. Before hiring me, we will talk and will ask each other questions to make sure this is a good fit. If I am not the right guy for what you are looking for I will let you know right away. I won't take the gig unless I am very confident I can make you happy.

The other thing worth mentioning is the fact that I don't show up with a pre-made playlist of music. I build a playlist onsite based on our previous conversations and on what I can see. For instance if I show up to a wedding and see a lot of cowboy hats and boots, I will probably play more country than I normally would. Then, as the night progresses, I see what works to get people on the dance floor and what doesn't, and I make changes accordingly.

My style is simple and fun. I don't 'scratch' or alter the music when I play it. I think more people enjoy dancing to great songs the way they were originally recorded and don't want to hear a DJ 'showing off'.

I have the greatest job in the world because I am able to make people happy by playing great music. I am thrilled when I can help make a bride's dream of a magical wedding and reception come true. I am ecstatic when at a corporate Christmas party I turn what would have been a hum-drum get together into an outright party. I take great satisfaction when students come up to me during a school prom and thank me for doing a great job. I ask, who WOULDN'T love to do this?

This is a bit of tongue in cheek answer to this question. God made me do it. I'll explain. About 20 years ago my church asked me if I could start playing the music at the youth dances they held a couple times a year. I knew they would wouldn't want songs that were inappropriate for youth played at those dances so I spent several months reading lyrics and categorizing music by how danceable it was, how 'clean' it was, and a variety of other factors. After putting all that effort into that I began to wonder if there would be a market for a DJ service that was family friendly. I guess after 20 years of doing this the answer is a most definite "yes".

There are three things I think that really make me stand out from other DJs. First is communication. Good communication prevents mistakes and helps things run smoother with less stress. Before we even sign a contract I will make sure I have a clear understanding of what you are expecting in a DJ and that I can fulfill that expectation otherwise I won't take the job.

I'll use weddings as an example. At weddings I don't play songs about breaking up, cheating on your spouse, etc. I know it sounds silly but most DJs don't even think about something like that.

Second, I work very hard to keep the music family friendly. I read lyrics and categorize accordingly. I purchase special 'radio edits' of today's hits (the cleaner versions that are allowed to be played on the radio) to keep things clean and fun.

Third is the music itself. Like just about every other DJ out there I have thousands of songs available from many genres spanning 70+ years. Where I think I stand out is WHAT I play depending on the type of the event.

Corporate events, school dances, charity events, golden anniversaries, birthday parties... they all have different needs and need to be handled appropriately. Call me and we can discuss YOUR needs.

Here is a list of things that are included at no additional cost:
*Unlimited phone consultations
*MC work during the event
*The use of a wireless microphone
*A deluxe 4-in1 dance light system for small to medium dance floors
*Set up and take down time
*Travel time within 1 hour of my home in Vancouver

Sorry, this is not the kind of service that lends itself to remote service.

Services

The majority of the jobs we do are weddings. From the time of the first communication to the last song played at your reception we will be there to answer questions and help any way we can.

We are big believers that good communication can prevent the vast majority of problems from ever occurring. That's why we have developed our 'Wedding Worksheet' years ago. It is a document we send out with every wedding bid that will give us valuable information to help insure things run smoothly on our end. We encourage calls from our clients if they have questions about anything that we might be able to help with.

Also, as our name implies, you won't be hearing profanity coming through our speakers giving Grandma a heart attack or uncle Bob covering the ears of his children. Regardless of the type of event, I always try to play radio edit versions of the songs (the versions you hear on the radio with no profanity).

Like other DJs I have thousands of songs at my disposal. Where I try to be different is I am very conscious about playing the right music for the right occasion. At corporate events that means no profanity that clients or employees would find offensive. It means keeping the volume at the appropriate level whether it's background music to add to the ambiance of a party or it's a full-blown dance. It also means helping maintain a fun and appropriate atmosphere for colleagues to let down their hair a little. I have owned several businesses, I understand.

You will have access to a hand held or lapel microphone. I will also be happy to MC if you'd like.
