A very pleasant surprise. For a little history of the Mill and the restaurant, check out:purcellvillerestaurant.c…I had the strip steak with 4 peppercorn sauce and loved it. They also have a pretty nice selection of beers and wines. From what I hear, the place apparently fills up on a regular basis, so make a reservation. For a larger party, request one of the third floor rooms and enjoy your meal in seclusion.
My boyfriend and I headed out for a day of vineyards last weekend and wound up at Breaux (not my favorite.) While at the vineyard we realized that we hadnt eaten since dinner the night before and tasting all of the wine could potentially be dangerous...in a fun way! We decided we would try to find a random local place to grab some food, and asked the woman providing our tasting if there was anywhere local that she would recommend. She let us know that about 1/4 mile down the road there was a "little place that is a working farm that is only open on the weekends, just random sandwiches and such." We thought it sounded a lot like a deli, and we were looking for something a little nicer, but figured we would drive by and at least see if it had potential. We were so happy that we did decide to stop by. Grandale Farm Restaurant is in fact on a working farm, and the restaurant is only open on the weekends. They do a lot of catering and weddings, they even do dinner theater once or twice a month. The restaurant is incredibly small, maybe 10 in door tables (during the warmer months they have more tables outside with an amazing view.) We were the only people in the restaurant at first, and were offered a seat near the roaring fire place. We opened the menu, which had a decent wine list (including VA wine....why dont more local restaurants serve VA wine?) The food selection is small, but did not disappoint. I ordered a grilled chicken breast sandwich with fresh mozzarella and basil on focaccia along with a small salad of micro greens and a small fruit salad. My boyfriend ordered Tres Cosas which was andouille sausage, shrimp and Capicola Ham over linguine. With the prices being so reasonable, we werent really expecting much. The food was amazing, the portions werent huge (reasonable lunch sized portions) and the prices were excellent. Our two meals, a bottle of pelligrino and a beer set us back $30. The dinner prices are higher, but the food was fantastic. They have a window in the small restaurant that allows you to watch the chef cook. The setting was very intimate and warm, the food was fantastic and the prices were incredibly reasonable for the quality of food that we received. I highly recommend this place if you are ever out on a vineyard tour in that part of VA!
