Q&As

I love learning about the different ways that people see the world and their work. The experience of working with clients is of collaborating on creating new ways to see, behave and perform. It is like solving a puzzle together—one with profoundly high stakes. And when clients use the work we do together to create breakthroughs for themselves and their enterprises, it is incredibly exciting. My clients inspire me.

I bring a huge toolkit. Many coaches have the tools of coaching. But few also have the tools of strategy, business, management, leadership, productivity and philosophy.

I think there are a lot of coaches and consultants who have a specific approach—and that is the lens through which they view everything. It’s not that hard to see everything as a nail if you are a hammer. I’m not loyal to any one methodology or approach. So each challenge, or goal is a puzzle. The solution may come from ontology, psychology, cognitive science, productivity tactics or something else entirely. The goal is to find what works optimally —and every individual and their challenge is unique. So the way we look at it and try to address it needs to be equally unique.

My coaching experience started with being a leader in a global personal growth organization where I was trained to lead seminars for hundreds of adults. Those seminars were public coaching sessions.

Individuals worked in issues in their lives and work, and requested coaching in front of hundreds of their peers. I was surprisingly effective, and my participants made massive strides in their lives. That led to my becoming responsible for training the other seminar leaders within the organization.

Only after that did I enter management consulting, and have the chance to apply those skills to working with senior executives on transforming their teams, their organizations and their results.

Along the way I led two tech startups, a few other companies and divisions and ultimately returned to founding my own coaching and consulting firm. But that breadth of experience and the many failures and lessons along the way is now a resource for my clients.

I do all of my individual coaching by phone, and group coaching by Zoom. The data suggests that phone (audio—without video) conveys the most emotional content. It also makes it possible to work with clients almost anywhere in the Western portion of the globe.

For team coaching and consulting I work both virtually and in-person.

Services

Using the approach described in my book, Powered by Principle, I work with senior teams to develop future-based goals and strategy. The process is not like most strategic planning. It is hard work and requires the rigor to question everything.
The output is a single page flowchart that everyone in the organization can understand. Along with the strategy map, the projects that comprise the strategy will be assigned to owners, and we will create a follow-up plan to keep the strategy alive, and to iterate upon it over the next year.

Executive coaching is the best benefit you can give your leadership and management team.

CaaS is an “all you can eat” service that makes coaching available to you and the members of your team. Because it is provided at a fixed monthly fee, it allows you to suggest coaching for people in various circumstances: great performance, performance improvement plans, new promotion, crisis management and many more.

It also includes regular coaching for as many individuals as you want to include.

This is weekly or biweekly coaching for an individual. Most of my clients are leaders at or above Director level. Many are start-up founders or leaders. The program is ongoing, and focuses on the key challenges, goals and opportunities in the client’s work and life. Since our lives and work are integrated, we may work on productivity in one conversation and on personal fitness in another.

There is no curriculum, but there is usually homework. The homework is entirely based on a commitment to help you make the changes, address the challenges or improve the performance in the areas that matter to you.

Strategic planning is critical for the medium and long-term. But in-between, unforeseen challenges emerge and those require immediate attention. Clients come to me when they want to achieve something unprecedented, or overcome a seemingly impossible challenge. We go to work on both mining all of the existing wisdom and brilliance within the organization, getting all of the relevant data around the issue, and then doing the hard work of creating a plan to do the unlikely.
