How can someone tell if their Garage is suitable for conversion?
If the intent for it to be used as a "granny flat" it will need to either already be built to Building Code specs or we will need to retro-fit this to match these. Then we can convert to whatever you require. With regards to garage conversions this is relatively straight forward requiring no Building or Resource consent as long as the size is correct and the intent remains for the use as "sleep-out" or a "granny flat". New (2025-26) RMA changes will further extent what can be done without Resource Consent.
Run us through the different stages of the Garage conversion process - what's involved?
Firstly the structure must be made watertight and then insulation and ventilation will be added, so as to maintain a healthy space. Then framing work will take place to make it match your design. GIB will be added along with Electrical work. Flooring. Then paint.
