We hired Robbie for the tile work on our new build. While he took the job on with enthusiasm his commitment faded at different stages with him not showing up when scheduled, but we worked through it. Within 24 months we had tiles that were lifting on the main floor and the tiling in the shower tub that he built sunk over a ¼ of an inch and lifted. We reached out to Robbie for repairs to be done and again he booked times and didn’t show up. This happened repeated. When he finally showed up we learned that several tiles in a variety of locations on the main floor were loose. He claimed that the lifting tiles were the result of the in-floor heating being turned up resulting in the adhesive not sticking. We did not agree that in-floor heating played a role. We hired 2 independent experts in the field, neither agreed that in-floor heating was a contributing factor to the tiles lifting. Rather, both identified 2 main factors for the lifting tiles: 1) moisture in the floor, a condition known as latency, which should have been detected through a moisture test and the cement floor sanded prior to applying the adhesive and 2) no expansion joints were put in place around crucial areas such as doorways and stairwells, so as to limit the areas where tiles could lift. Both of these were Robbie’s responsibility as a professional tiler and are expectations laid out by the Tilers Association. We had a certified report that was shared with Robbie and he refused to take any ownership for his workmanship or provide any warranty for his work. In conversations he tried to intimidate us and at one point threatened us with legal action because we wouldn’t back down. We contacted a solicitor and had 2 letters sent to Robbie. He responded claiming to have evidence against what the inspector said, but nothing ever arrived and he didn’t even bother to get a solicitor of his own. A follow up letter from our solicitor was returned with “no longer at this address”. We are out thousands of euros and are looking at having to have our entire main floor tiling redone. We acknowledge this was a cash deal of over 10 000 euros and we did not receive any receipts, but we never anticipated it would result in no warranty or the level of frustration and disappointment we have had to endure as result of the hiring Robbie. He should have stood by his work. He lacked integrity and professionalism in addressing our situation and seemed to do so with ease, leaving us to feel that this was not his first time. Robert tiled our kitchen floor and did a fantastic job. I would have no hesitation in recommending him for any tilling work and I will always use him for any future work.
