Q&As

You can tell your garage is suitable for conversion by the integrity of the walls, roof, and foundations will determine whether your garage is appropriate for conversion. Some are too old or badly constructed, in which case it could be less expensive to demolish and rebuild. Your garage should be fine if it is made of block or brick and is structurally strong, but it will still need to be fitted out inside.

When converting a garage you need ensure that it is:

-structurally sound and have a damp-proof course.
-Have the walls, the floor and the roof insulated to be energy efficient.
-Have all new and existing electrics tested to ensure safety. -Future-proof the space by allowing plenty of electrical points and a phone point, even if they won’t be used now.
-Be moisture proofed, with good ventilation.
-Fire-proofed, with escape routes (in case of fire), that comply too. For example windows and a door.

When building a loft you should keep in mind :

-the general rule of building a loft which is 2.2m from the floor to the ceiling.
- often positions obstructions in their loft spaces, including water tanks and chimney stacks
- Important see the layout of the stairs

Stage 1- Install steel beams to provide framework from which is to support the floor and roof structure of the new loft conversion

Stage 2: install the floor joints that will be fitted inbetween the steal beams to complete the floor structure of the loft conversion

Stage 3- If a domer is needed as part of the loft conversion then it will be built after the floor is fixed.

Stage 4- Finishing a Loft Conversion after the main structure is in place normally takes a lot longer than the initial build of the structure. Velux, doors, stairs, plumbing, electrics etc all need to be installed. Surfaces need to be applied including roofing, flooring, plastering, tiling etc. Lots of different tradespeople may be required and they will need to be booked in in the right order but, in the end the finished Loft Conversion will be completed successfully.
