Moving away from the conventional practice of cake decorating, Liz’s passion lies within contemporary cake design, with an emphasis on modern minimalism. She loves exploring different textures and playing around with colour to create edible pieces of art for her clients. Using only the finest and freshest ingredients, Liz knows how important appearance and flavour are to her clients. That is why she works closely with them to ensure their wedding or celebration cake is designed to suit their individual style, ultimately creating a one off centrepiece which is both stunning and delicious.

What do you love most about your job?

The thing I love the most is hearing all about the Bride and Groom’s wedding plans at their Tasting Consultations. This enables me to design a wedding cake to suit their particular style and ultimately creating a centrepiece that is both stunning and delicious.

What inspired you to start your own business?

So, how did CakeBuds originate? Well, since a young age I have always enjoyed baking. However it wasn’t until my daughters first birthday in September 2016 that I started baking celebration cakes. Family and friends then asked me to make cakes for them, so I taught myself to decorate cakes using books, Pinterest, YouTube and other online tutorials. The feedback I received was overwhelming which ultimately encouraged me to set up CakeBuds in summer 2017.

At the start of 2018, I decided to expand my business into wedding cakes. Expanding into wedding cakes has led to many exciting opportunities such as styled photoshoots, becoming a recommended wedding supplier for several wedding venues across the south of England and winning the title of South Central Wedding Cake Designer/Maker of the year in The 2019 Wedding Industry Award.

It was not until the end of 2018 that I truly started to feel like I had found my own style in cake design. I was finding that more and more couples were breaking boundaries when it came to planning their weddings. Everyone was trying to be different in one way or another. I soon realised that I too was being drawn to cakes which were a little different to the traditional wedding cake. Whether the cakes were minimalist, highly detailed, bold or modest, they all had a creative flair to them which made them stand out. That is when I started to experiment with different textures and soon realised that I had a real passion for contemporary cake design.

I feel like my journey in contemporary cake design has only just begun and I am super excited to see what the future holds.
