Paul Clifton Web Design London

Paul Clifton is a freelance web designer based in London. Paul offers bespoke web design services, creating eye-catching and functional websites that stand out amongst the competition. When I decided to start my own business I knew the first thing I needed was a website, but I honestly didn’t know where to begin. What I appreciated most about Paul is that he made everything easy to comprehend. Even though I’m somewhat of a technophobe, I was able to make an active input throughout. I absolutely love my new website!

What’s your background as a web designer?

I had a somewhat unconventional route to my current role. I always considered myself more of a ‘creative’ type than a tech-whizz. I started out as a graphic designer but soon became obsessed with user-experience design. I realised that functionality added an exciting new dimension to my work, whereas before I only thought about visual style. I decided to teach myself CSS and JavaScript in my spare time, and it wasn’t long before my agency let me take on web design projects.

What made you decide to become a freelance web designer in London?

When you’re early in your career, working for an agency is definitely a smart idea. You get diversity in your work, which certainly prepares you for future projects. The safety net of your peers is always reassuring as well, especially when you’re still learning. However, I think everyone to some extent aspires to work for themselves. Once I felt confident in my ability to seek new challenges, there was no stopping me from advertising as a freelancer.

What other skills can you offer your customers?

I’d certainly say that my design background helps me visualise exactly what a client is looking for. I started out working in a digital marketing agency, so I know that having a great website goes beyond the initial design and build. For instance, I also have experience working in search engine optimisation. When customers get the best return on their investment, I know I’ve done my job properly.

How do you like to work with clients?

Any good web designer should be motivated to deliver on their client’s expectations. However, I’ve also learned the importance of ‘managing’ expectations. Less experienced web designers sometimes promise the world and then realise down the line that it’s not feasible. I sit down with a client and I tell them from the outset what will work and what won’t. The right kind of customer will always appreciate honesty; it means that everyone is happy with what you’ve mutually agreed on.
