Maths Tuition York

‘21 Certificate of Excellence

Expert one-to-one, private maths tuition in the York area I'm Joseph. Based in York, I am a friendly, patient and dedicated tutor with a First Class Masters degree in Physics from the University of York. I will always be prepared, conscientious and focused on helping you succeed in your goals. Patience, empathy and understanding of the individual's needs are at the core of my teaching method. Progress is recorded after each session and future sessions are planned accordingly. Each student will vary on what they need to focus on and in what proportions - background theory, preliminary questions or past papers. Sometimes a topic will have to be approached from different angles to bring about understanding and I believe my patience and creativity in this area help. My knowledge of each maths syllabus (at each maths level/with different exam boards) is thorough, but beyond this, I also feel it is vital to understand the exam process - where marks are given in exams and what the examiner likes to see. I always try, where possible, to give the student clear step-by-step techniques to approach questions that can be repeated in the high-pressure atmosphere of exams.

What do you love most about your job?

I most love being able to teach in a one-to-one setting, letting me devote my time completely to an individual's specific needs. Normal teaching in a class of many students means that usually I cannot do this, not having the necessary time to address an individual's problems fully.

In one-to-one maths tutoring I can understand where the student is coming from and how they think, as well as the methods that are most likely to work for them. I find it very satisfying to contribute to this improvement.

What inspired you to start your own business?

I enjoy being in control of my own job. I find that I am self-driven and I have no problem with motivation, always striving to do the best I can, and in this case in helping students get the best out of themselves.

I also very much like the freedom that I get from working like this.

Why should our clients choose you?

I prepare extremely thoroughly for each student. I think about how I can get the best out of each individual based on their strengths and weaknesses in maths, as well as their particular ways of working. And then I plan each session accordingly, having also considered what was completed in the last session, but also what may have been done in school/college (if applicable)

I also believe I'm very patient and sympathetic to the different struggles the student may face. I believe this is important to help them feel comfortable in the sessions and to gain confidence in their maths skills.

Can you provide your services online or remotely? If so, please add details.

I try to keep tutoring in-person as much as possible because it is so much less efficient when done online - so much less good-quality work is done through online sessions unfortuantely. But online tutoring can be discussed where necessary.

What changes have you made to keep your customers safe from Covid-19?

When tutoring in-person I will wear a mask if desired. I clean items that I will use (such as stationary) before I start sessions on a morning/afternoon.
