What’s the secret to taking a great photograph?

If you asked this question to me 6 years ago I would have reeled off all the technical settings I could think of, what values you might use and how they perfectly come together to capture the scene. However, over time, I've learned that photography is so much less about cameras and lighting, and so much more about telling a story in a single moment.

A great photo is relative to the type of photography you're talking about. A great headshot, should invoke some sort of emotion to the viewer; "they look friendly, serious, professional, attractive, happy, powerful", you might think to yourself. A great sport photo might freeze an intense and precise moment of action, capturing the athletes energy and strain or celebration. A great family photo should capture the connection between the parents and their children and tell the story of their day. A great landscape photo should show balance and act as a window into the scene.

It's easy to be mislead into thinking that all that technical jargon and fancy equipment is going to help you create a fantastic new photo (for many photographers in hinders them); I like to focus much more on how I interact with my subjects and capture them to tell their story.

What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?

1. Share your vision with me; describe what you have in your head and let me help you to create that image. Turing your vision into a reality is my job as a content creator.

2. Be honest and share explain what challenges we might face; are we working on a tight schedule, are we limited on budget, is it realistic to create what you have in mind? I always aim to exceed expectations with my services and overcoming challenges is part of that process.

3. What are the photos/videos going to be used for and what do you want the impact of them to be; are we trying to attract more customers, inform the public, inspire young children, showcase your event?

What do you love most about your job?

Turning your vision into a reality, and seeing the results of my work in the world. I have my own passion projects within photography, such as landscape and travel photography, but working with clients is what leads to impact and change through photography.

What inspired you to start your own business?

I've always worked best under pressure. You might think working as a freelancer means you have no pressure as there is no-one telling you what to do and when to do it, but that's not the case, at least not how I choose to look at it. I am responsible for the success of my own business and career, and whilst sometimes that terrifies me, every day it ensure I work hard to produce outstanding results for my clients and continue to push myself to create more, better and faster.

Why should our clients choose you?

What I can offer is not only fantastic photography and videography, but a thorough and friendly service from start to finish that will leave your clients glad they chose to work with me, and wanting to work with me again in the future.

Photographers are renowned for being difficult people to work with; nit-picky, clock-watchers with hidden fees and little patience. Thankfully, I am none of those things and always go above and beyond to help my clients turn their vision into a reality through hard work, expert knowledge and a commitment to exceed expectations. I've had the privilege of working with A-list celebrities, and the pleasure of working with start-up business owners and I treat them all with the same respect and care that they deserve.

What changes have you made to keep your customers safe from Covid-19?

Social distancing, where possible. Online consultations.
