How much does a Pet Groomer cost?

The average cost of pet grooming depends on several factors, including the size of your pet and the length of their hair.

Your professional pet groomer will be able to advise you on the full range of options available, as well as what’s most suitable for you and your pet.

How do I choose the best Pet Groomer?

There are a number of factors that are worth considering when choosing your pet groomer. These include:

  • The facility - Check to see if their facility is well equipped with a ventilated salon, clean workstations, sturdy tables, and pet-friendly products.

  • Other services - Ask your professional what exact services they offer. Some professional pet groomers can also identify health issues, including ear infections, tooth decay, and skin infections.

  • Stay and watch - It isn't unreasonable to want to observe the session for the first time. This is also a good opportunity to observe your dog’s behaviour for future visits.

  • Experience - Some breeds have particular grooming needs, so you may want to seek out a groomer who has experience with your specific breed. Ask whether he or she knows what the breed standard is and whether they can perform the correct hair cut for your breed.

  • Training - Training can vary. Some groomers learn on the job through apprenticeships while some have attended college courses. You’ll want to understand the pet groomer’s experience, training, and knowledge.

  • Products - The preference is for gentle, high-quality washing and grooming products that don't contain harsh chemicals.

  • Housing - Your dog’s safety when outside your care is an important concern. You'll need to know how your dog will be housed when they're not on the grooming table. Pets not being groomed must be kept in a crate or a secure designated play area, always with the owner’s consent. Your dog should have a crate to himself with clean padding, plenty of air, and in constant view of salon staff.

  • First aid experience - The first aid kit should be visible, with a member of staff trained in first aid always present. The pet groomer should ask you about your dog’s health and any medical conditions such as skin problems, allergies, arthritis or any other ailments. This helps determine how they’ll handle your dog, what products they’ll use, and whether your dog has physical limitations.

  • Liability insurance - Make sure your pet groomer has liability insurance. This covers you for any hefty medical expenses you might incur if your dog is injured under the pet groomer's care.

  • Hidden fees - It is a good idea to find out if there are any extra fees. The cost of dog grooming can vary by dog size and coat type, as well as what services are included in a standard bath or groom. Some dogs also take longer to groom than others. A professional pet groomer will be able to quote you an exact rate after they have assessed your dog’s individual needs.

You can be confident that any of the Bark local pet groomers listed will give you a reliable and professional service.

What products do Pet Groomers use?

Pet groomers always use shampoo especially formulated for pets, including those specifically designed to remove odours from the hair and skin. These shampoos will also eliminate odours with various odour-killing ingredients, while other shampoos simply shield odours for a limited period of time.

How often should you use experienced Grooming Services?

Most owners of cats or dogs with longer fur opt to take their pet to an experienced groomer once every 4-6 weeks, while shorter-haired breeds may only visit every 8-12 weeks.

The best way to determine how often to visit a pet groomer is to inspect your pet’s hair. It is important to pay attention to the following factors:

  • Is your pet unable to see because his hair has grown over his eyes?
  • Is he experiencing regular tangles in the coat due to length?
  • Does his coat have mats or other unhealthy patches that need to be removed?
  • Is his coat starting to look unhealthy and unkempt?
  • Does your pet have problems with health or cleanliness because of his coat length?

Remember, grooming appointments can be stressful, but they should not be traumatic. If your pet is acting unusual after a trip to the groomer, consider it a red flag. A good pet groomer understands how to work with even the most challenging pets. Your pet should seem relatively relaxed and confident after the appointment and not afraid to go back.

How do I check my pet groomer’s credentials?

You should look out for pet groomers who have certificates in Grooming Assistants and Introductory Dog Grooming as well as Diplomas for Dog Grooming.

Before you choose a pet groomer, you should read testimonials on their website.

You can also check out customer reviews on their Bark profile.
