The Candlelight Club

The Candlelight Club is a pop-up 1920s speakeasy themed party. We put on public events every three or four weeks, hiring venue spaces in central London for each party, and we can also put on private versions too. We usually have a live jazz band, plus vintage DJs and cabaret—we have a wide roster of variety acts, dance troupes, circus performers, as well as photographers and photos booths, fortune tellers, vintage hair and make-up stylists and much more. We can run a fully stocked bar with vintage cocktail menu or a Champagne or Prosecco reception. We can offer food options from a three-course, sit-down menu, to a buffet, bowl food or canapés. At our parties guests are encouraged to dress in 1920s costume, which helps bring alive the feeling of stepping back in time. Note that the Candlelight Club is only suitable for adult parties, and works best for groups of at least 50 people or more.

What do you love most about your job?

I have always loved throwing parties, and I've always loved the style and culture of the 1920s and 1930s, so this is a perfect way to combine the two. I've been involved with live music for a long time, both as a player and producer and I usually run the live sound at our parties myself. It's a great opportunity to work with talented musicians and cabaret performers, giving them a platform and a receptive audience. I also have an interest in cocktail history, photography, and many other elements that come together when putting on our events. Plus—nothing is more gratifying than having guests come up to you at the end of the evening to say what a wonderful time they have had.

What inspired you to start your own business?

Having recently been made redundant from my previous career as a magazine editor, I was approached by the original co-founder of the Candlelight Club with the idea for it. (He happened to walk past the venue where I was throwing a vintage-themed party and he got curious about who was behind it.) Our club nights took off rapidly and I've been doing it ever since.

Why should our clients choose you?

Because we can offer a unique experience. Company event managers often seek us out wanting something different from the usual corporate hospitality. The 1920s is a period that most people have a picture of in their heads, so as a theme it catches the imagination and helps bond the party-goers together. Our parties allow guests to get involved as much or as little as they like: you can get up and dance to the band (and we can also offer dance instructors or performers who will teach the audience a few basic Charleston moves) or just sit and let it wash over you.
