Non-Diet Nutrition

Who I am As a Registered Associate Nutritionist with the Association for Nutrition, I've had proper training in nutrition science and hold legit qualifications. I specialise in non-diet nutrition, helping people to break away from the diet mentality, take charge of their health and find real, guilt-free enjoyment from food again. What makes me different? Like I said I practice from the non-diet approach which means no meal plans, no calorie counting, no scales and NO DIETS. I help people to rediscover intuitive eating - eating when you're hungry, stopping when you're full and fully enjoying your food - so that they can eat in a way that's best for their body and not to help make the diet industry richer. Online consultations Before we get stuck in I offer a free 15 minute discovery call so that we can start to get to know each other and see how we can work together. Sessions come in blocks of 4, so we'd get to check-in with your progress and really get to grips with what you need. It's hard to achieve meaningful change with one-off sessions so a bit of commitment is needed on both sides, but trust me it's worth it. EDIT: during the current COVID-19 crisis I'm offering one-off sessions to support with emotional eating, food shopping, self-care and generally how to survive self-isolation! I offer unlimited between-session support, extra guided reading, exercises and activities and an optional audio recording of each discussion for you to refer back to. Although I specialise in helping people to ditch food rules and rediscover intuitive eating, I can also help with specific nutrition related concerns, guided through the non-diet approach. Current offers For all new clients (and for a limited time only!) I'll send you the latest edition of 'Intuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Program that Works' by Evelyn Tribole & Elyse Resch which is the bible for all non-diet converts! How important is a healthy diet to someone’s health and wellbeing?

So there are 2 things to consider when answering this question (it’s a big question, but I’ll try and keep this brief!). Firstly, food and diet is only one piece in the giant puzzle of your health and wellbeing. Health is holistic, meaning that a whole lot of different factors make it up and can affect it. Things like your genetics, family history of disease, where you live, how much money you make, social support structure, whether you smoke, your activity levels and so much more all impact on our health! So, of course diet is important but it’s by no means the only influencer in our overall physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing.

Secondly, it's really important to understand what a 'healthy diet' is. To have a healthy diet you have to: 1. eat a wide range of a variety of different foods and 2. have a healthy relationship with food. While most of us understand that we need to have a ‘balanced’ diet a lot of us struggle with the relationship part.

A healthy relationship with food means not worrying or stressing about what we eat/have eaten, no feelings of guilt or shame around food and taking full pleasure and satisfaction from food. Based on this lots of us probably couldn’t say that we have a very healthy relationship with food.

Back in my diet days I know I couldn’t. I would very often over-eat foods that I’d deemed ‘unhealthy’ and then feel intense feelings of guilt– but not tell anyone because I was so ashamed! But please know, if you can relate to this you’re not alone!

Worry about food, our bodies and health can severely impact our mental and physical wellbeing in itself. So in thinking about a healthy diet, our relationship to food has to be considered. Only when you’re comfortable with eating a wide range of different foods (and yes, that means carbs too!), eating regularly and in tune with your body’s needs can you start to layer on specific nutrition advice.

Food freedom and a life free from worry about our food choices is possible, but for many it requires a shift in mindset and a move away from diet culture.

What do you love most about your job?

The feeling of knowing that I’ve helped someone find food freedom. Of knowing that another person is now unburdened from the pursuit of weight loss and the ‘perfect’ diet. And helping them become empowered to take care of their health.

Knowing that I’ve played a small role in helping improve someone’s confidence, self-respect and self-compassion is intensely satisfying. But I by no means take credit for this, my clients own their health in a way that has very little to do with me and much more to do with their own personal journey and hard work.

What inspired you to start your own business?

Working for myself has always been a dream of mine. My Dad is sort of an inspiration in my life and as he's been self-employed for a couple of decades he's always encouraged me to take the leap.

Being freelance offers so much variety to my day, sometimes I find myself teaching a workshop or cooking class, others having in-depth personal 1:1 conversations helping people step away from the diet mentality. Other days I simply work on my laptop in my pyjamas. It’s the variety and freedom to choose how I spend my days that really drew me towards starting my own business.

I have hopes that one day I’ll be able to expand Non-Diet Nutrition and help train other nutrition professionals in the non-diet approach, offering an alternative option to diet culture, one that doesn’t take people’s money knowing they will be left poorer in health, time and finances.

Why should our clients choose you?

Because I’m different. I don’t make empty promises of a ‘new you’ or getting that ‘beach body’. But I do promise you a new way of seeing food, health and your body. Of an end to endless hours spent obsessing about the cupcake you ate yesterday or whether you should try and drag yourself out on a run even though you’re just not feeling it.

Freedom from food and body worry gives you back so much time and life that dieting and food obsession steals from you. This is what can be achieved through the non-diet approach and gives you back time and energy to focus on what’s really important in life.
