James Hollingsworth Music

I've been a full-time professional performer since 2006 and a veteran of 1500+ gigs from Royal Albert Hall to The Albert Inn in Totnes. I also teach guitar, voice and harmonica to people in the local area and remotely. My practical approach to understanding music is through the instrument first, backed up by theory - not the other way around - making the learning process more intuitive and satisfying. I can help you to learn at your own speed - gently pushing you to learn self-discipline to improve your technique and experience.

What do you love most about your job?

The variety. Performing, of course, and also the traveling - from grand vistas to tiny nooks of Nature seen on the road. It's also so rewarding to see a student gradually find their voice, or mastery of the instrument, taking their musical journey beyond our lessons.

What inspired you to start your own business?

Music is my vocation. I've always had an affinity with sounds, I'm a natural mimic, but it was actually only when I gave up formal music education and picked up a friend's guitar that I really began my journey towards becoming a full-time musician - playing by ear instead of simply sawing out notes of various lengths in my violin classes!

Why should our clients choose you?

I have a wealth of experience from years of playing, writing and performing, and I take pleasure in patiently passing this on to my students.

Can you provide your services online or remotely? If so, please add details.

I'm happy to do lessons via Skype, FaceTime, Zoom or WhatsApp.
Payment must be in advance by Bank Transfer or Paypal.

What changes have you made to keep your customers safe from Covid-19?

Lessons online are reliably socially distanced! Gig-wise I've been able to do only two since Lockdown-1, both were outside and well-spaced - and I don't mean just the music ;-)
