Steph Jones Counselling

Steph Jones Counselling

Starting counselling is often quite a scary prospect. You may already feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of therapists available in your local area- what do the different qualifications and approaches mean? Who is most experienced? Who will be able to help me the best? Although there are many different types of therapy to choose from, the one thing that nearly all counsellors can agree on is that the relationship is the most important aspect of therapy. I am a professional, experienced, accredited and highly-qualified therapist who works with adults and young people on a variety of issues. I am a Registered Member of the BACP (MBACP), hold a University Postgraduate Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy, a Graduate Certificate in Counselling, a first-class honours degree, an Introductory Certificate in CBT and am committed to ongoing learning by way of my continued professional development. I use something called the person-centred approach which was developed by Carl Rogers (read more here) which is about helping you discover your own solutions, rather than someone ‘telling you’ how to do things. Using my skills, sensitivity, empathy and compassion, I will help you to face and overcome your difficulties and explore your deeper beliefs, values, thoughts, behaviours and emotions. From time to time, life can feel like an uphill struggle. The place you want to be may feel a world away from where you currently are. Something inside tells you that things are “not quite right” but you don’t know how to go about making those positive changes to improve your life. Perhaps you are experiencing feelings of stress, depression, anxiety, having difficulties in your relationships, or have found unhealthy ways of coping with pressure such as self-medicating. You are not alone and certainly do not need to struggle through life. Too often we are told to, “pull ourselves together” or, “get on with things!” – none of which are helpful suggestions! Through therapy you can learn how to better cope, develop new strategies for life, trust your instincts, and focus on your own journey and acceptance of self. My professional University and BACP accredited training has provided me with a range of skills and theoretical approaches to draw from including an appreciation for person-centred, integrative, humanistic, cognitive behavioral, mindfulness and psychodynamic therapies. I prefer to use a particular type of counselling called ‘person-centred’ and can combine this with other psychological toolkits to suit you. Working in collaboration, we will develop a strong, secure and safe relationship which will act as the catalyst for facilitating your change. I think it’s helpful to view my role as a kind of guide – that saying, I categorically will not be telling you what to do, or how to do it! Your goals are your own and I will assist you to access the deepest part of you – your own inner wisdom and guidance – your intuition. From the first contact, I will take a little bit of information about you (to get a general idea of what you would like to work on) and am happy to answer any questions you might have about the process. Although I don’t profess to be a mind reader, I do have the ability to see beyond the words – listening to the music I think some people call it! Areas of counselling I deal with: Abandonment Abortion Abuse Accidents Addiction(s) Affairs and betrayals Alcoholism Anger management Anorexia nervosa Anxiety Attachment disorders Bereavement Binge-eating Bipolar disorder/Manic depression Body dysmorphic disorder Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) Bulimia nervosa Bullying Cancer Career Carer support Change Child related issues Chronic boredom Chronic fatigue syndrome/ME Confidence building Crime Cults Dating Depression Dissociation Domestic violence Drug abuse Eating disorders Elderly issues Emotional abuse Emptiness Fame Family issues Financial concerns/ debt Gambling Gender dysphoria Generalised anxiety disorder Historical abuse HIV/AIDS Hoarding Infatuation Infertility Insecurities Internet addiction Intrusive thoughts Judgement Limerence Loneliness Loss Love Low self-confidence Low self-esteem Miscarriage Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Obsession Panic disorder Passive aggressive behaviour Perfectionism Personality disorders Phobias Physical abuse Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) Postnatal depression Pregnancy and birth Psychosis Redundancy Rejection Relationship issues Relocation Retirement Shyness Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) Self-harm Separation and divorce Sex addiction Sex problems Sexual abuse Sexuality Smoking Spending Spirituality Stress Suicidal thoughts Tourette’s syndrome Trafficking Trauma Wedding nerves Work-related stress
