What do you love most about your job?

I love being a counsellor because in my experience too many people feel unheard, tired, stuck, sad, frustrated or stressed. Listening to and supporting people through whatever it is they are going through is so rewarding. Through counselling I can use my skills, and I am always learning something new, as everyone is unique . I believe that life is easier when you talk about it, and what a privilege it is to help make people's lives easier.

What inspired you to start your own business?

1. I realised there was a real need for a business that provided quality counselling, which was affordable, by someone who not only loved their job, but was able to provide a friendly and professional service.
2. Having worked in both the private and public sectors, providing many different types of therapy, to: children in schools; students at university; inviduals; couples; parents; families; and stressed people at work, I realised I wanted to keep the variety in my daily working life, rather than it depend on where I was working at the time.
3. I enjoy the flexibility of when I work, ( as I'm happy to work evenings and weekends), and also how I work, whether it be working one to one with an individual, with families, or facilitating support groups.
4. Having my own business also allows me to to supervise and train other counsellors.

Why should our clients choose you?

What to expect from counselling

If you have decided to make an appointment with me, you might be feeling anxious about your first session. Making the decision to get help and address the issues you are facing is an important first step and is not always easy. Knowing what to expect from our counselling sessions should help you feel more prepared and less nervous about your first appointment.

In your first session it is likely that I will ask you some questions to gain an understanding of what’s worrying you and the way your thought processes work. The information obtained here will be used to help you in future sessions.

The following areas may be covered in your first session:
•We will talk about what brought you to counselling and what you hope to gain from it.
•I will ask you about your current situation and the day-to-day issues you are facing. We may discuss your personal history which will give me a chance to understand more about you as a person and why these issues may have occurred.
•We will explore what symptoms you are experiencing, whether they are physical or psychological.
All clients can expect the following:

RESPECT . I will be non-judgemental, will be able to hear whatever you are saying, and be receptive.
ENCOURAGMENT. I will be supportive at all times.
EMPATHY. Feeling being understood is important.
CONFIDENTIALITY. You need to feel safe and trust that I will observe confidentiality as assured under the Protection Act.
PROFESSIONALISM. I have a Masters degree in counselling, and am a member of two national professional organisations (BACP & NZAC).
AUTHENTICITY. I will always give attention to care, quality service, and commitment to you.
EXPERIENCE. I have worked as a counsellor all over the world for 20 years, and I still love my job.
