GP Counselling

GP Counselling offers extensive counselling experience working with serious mental health illnesses, emotional difficulties and specialised addiction counselling. GP Counselling is client centred, values diversity, fairness and equality and offers a safe, secure environment to talk through your presenting issues in the Lisburn and Omagh Practices. It is committed to finding a model unique to each individual as one model of working does not fit all. Sessions are offered face-face, remotely via Teams or Telephone. A free thirty minute consultation is offered to find out about your presenting issues, if we can work together and to discuss times, dates and frequency of sessions. My fee is £40 and I operate a sliding scale.

What do you love most about your job?

Being able to help and support people to find a solutions to their mental health and emotional problems. When working with addictions I get job satisfaction knowing I have helped clients get sober or clean off drugs, it makes the hard work I put into helping these clients worthwhile and meaningful. Addiction is a serious mental health illness, addiction counselling is difficult and challenging due to the many layers of emotional and mental health issues that underpin it. It is a humbling experience when clients trust me and allow me into their lives, seeing them beginning to live instead of surviving gives me much pleasure and there are no words I can find to explain the feeling.

What inspired you to start your own business?

Working as a facilitator in the field of Peace and Reconciliation in Northern Ireland I witnessed when people felt safe and secure they could share stories and start healing. This work lead me to train as a Counsellor and after graduating I worked as a Trauma Counsellor for three years in the voluntary sector. I trained in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Motivational Interviewing and onto Addiction Counselling for the past thirteen years working with individuals, family, friends and groups.

Why should our clients choose you?

Whilst I specialise in Addictions I have had experience working with all other serious mental health illness and emotional difficulties. As one model does not fit all clients I use a combined approach as an Integrative Counsellor using various tools and techniques from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Psychodynamic Therapy, Person Centred Therapy and Motivational Therapy to find a custom and bespoke model to address your issues and difficulties in a safe and secure environment free of judgement. I value equality and diversity and welcome clients irrespective of race, gender, sexual orientation, religion and culture.

Can you provide your services online or remotely? If so, please add details.

My services are offered online via Teams and remotely via telephone counselling

What changes have you made to keep your customers safe from Covid-19?

I offered online and remote counselling at the beginning of the Pandemic. When the rules were relaxed I offered face to face counselling. The chairs spaced out to accommodate social distance. Hand sanitiser was placed at the front hall of the practice and face masks were supplied. Clients were asked to answer a Covid questionnaire before their first session e.g. have you had any symptoms, been around someone who has? Thermal screening was used to prevent the spread of the disease when clients arrived at the practice.
