We have been members of the Karate Academy for just over 2 years. We attend classes at the Newton Abbot dojo, Brunel Road, but there are classes at a variety of locations throughout the Teignbridge and Torbay area, and even as far a field as Seaton. Classes range from Little Warriors - an introduction to Martial Arts - to family classes, ladies only classes, classes during the day (if your work schedule allows) and classes later in the evenings - if you want to escape the kids! There are also a variety of workshops and seminars during the year focusing on specialist areas from ladies self defense, Kata bunkai, bully busting/stranger danger, a summer camp, and we are regularly visited by instructors from across the country who bring different methods and viewpoints. There are even residential trips on offer.We are lucky to have a fantastic team of instructors and many black belt students to aspire to. Our membership includes as many classes as we can attend and a 1/2 hour private session with an instructor every month - invaluable when you need to work on something specific, or if you're approaching a grading. There are a variety of different payment options and the fees are very reasonable.The club is very family orientated and all are welcome to participate, regardless of age. I love the fact that I can train with my kids. However, if that's not your cup of tea, there is also a comfortable seating area with freshly brewed coffee for the mums and dads.We are so pleased that we found the club and are proud to be party of the Karate Academy family - can't recommend them highly enough.

Can't recommend this highly enough. My eldest son (now 13) first joined this group over 3 years ago and has not only developed an amazing level of fitness and stamina but has also had the additional skills of discipline and perseverance taught as part of these classes. He has also gained the confidence to compete nationally. A year later both my husband and younger son decided to join and all 3 find the classes enjoyable. I love the fact that this class is designed to engage both young and the not so young. The classes are mixed ages and levels but this does not stop learning or hold anyone back but encourages everyone to develop at their own pace. There are a lot of friendly faces and a good support network. The instructor is great and the reason this club works as well as it does. Definitely a way to keep both body and mind active.

My instructor the Legendary Master Jonny Black began teaching me in 1995 and inspired me to become an instructor and open my own schools now known as Devon Martial Arts.
Devon Martial Arts was founded in 2004 when Mr Brett Dowling IV launched the first P.U.M.A. Junior Kickboxing school, located in Exeter and supported by the late great Master Johnny Black VIII Degree. He brought Taekwon-Do to the South West in 1976, to whom Brett was honoured as his assistant within Exeter Taekwon-Do before taking on the school full time from his Master.
Within our schools we have seen many excel in their chosen disciplines, becoming respected black belts, role models, instructors, regional, national and world level competitors.
The school is also home to Mr Danny Dowling III, instructor, multiple title holder and ex GB Olympic squad member.
Devon Martial Arts has something for everyone of all abilities and ages, whether its Taekwon-Do, Kickboxing or Little Puma’s (4-6 year olds), and additionally tuition in weapons, Bo/Long Staff and Legend Bruce Lee’s favourite, Nunchaku.
Martial arts has been proven to develop confidence, motor function as well as having a positive effect on practitioners moral code and conduct.
Classes are instructed by brothers Brett Dowling IV Degree in Taekwon-Do, 4th Degree in Kickboxing and Danny Dowling III Dregree in Taekwon-Do, 2nd Degree in Kickboxing. Both Brett and Danny had the honour of to train with the Founder of Taekwon-Do, Major General Choi Hong Hi IX Degree in 2000. Over the years they have also taken opportunities to learn from Kickboxing Pioneer and undefeated middleweight champion, Mr Bill ‘Superfoot’ Wallace, amongst many other experts and masters within the Martial Art world.
