What makes a great website?

I could waffle on (as many tend to do), but my years of experience in advertising have lead me to this one important conclusion - what makes a web site essentially great is 'Aesthetics'. Simply put, if your site isn't visually appealing and does'nt relate to your business, potential customers will leave.
Of course im not rulling out 'Purpose', 'Relevant content', 'Clear Navigation' and son on....... These are of course all important elements when a web site is to function sucessfully in such a competitive world.
Just bare this in mind - Your website is sometimes the only form of advertising related to your enterprise that your customers will ever see, its their first impression of your business. Effective web design is judged by the users of the website and not the website owners.

What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?

First and foremost the most relevant question should be:
1. What is the nature of your business?
Having a very thorough understanding as to who they are, what they offer, how long they’ve been trading etc will definitely help with the design process, plus decisions you'll make throughout the client/designer relationship.
The next question should almost definitely be:
2. What do you want your site to accomplish?
Every website should by its very existance accomplish something, for example - attracting traffic in the form of potential customers, providing the public with relevant information relating to your products and or services, allow for a simple, efficient and secure way of purchasing your products, plus provide the user with a pleasurable and memorable experience.
3. Do you have a website already?
Many clients will already have a web site which is not functioning as it should. This may require a simple aesthetic overhaul, or perhaps a complete redesign. Perhaps they have had a previous negative experience with a badly designed site, or even with the designer themselves.

4. What makes your company remarkable?
Trying to figure out what makes a client’s business unique, not just to potential customers, but compared to other business's offering similar products and services. Try to apply this when considering the overall design.
5. Who are your competitors?
Learn about the competition. This is very important when considering a unique design, look at what competitors are offering and how they are promoting their products/services. How can you improve upon this?

7. Who exactly are your customers?
Knowing your clientele base is very important when making sure that you correctly target potential customers. Simple market research can help with this.

8. What features do you want your website to have?
Many clients will have a preconceived idea of what they want, this is often influenced from other sites which they have seen and browsed through. This is fine, buts its important to communicate that the site has to be user friendly and function in a way that is 100% relevant to the business.

What do you love most about your job?

Good question, I guess there are many reasons why i love designing. Without getting bogged down in a sea of retorts, i'll narrow my response down to just three (reader friendly :-))
Designing is in fact a three part process;
1) Client Contact
I always meet with clients throughout the design process. This helps not only with building up a positive relationship, but it also helps when knowing and understanding what they want.
2) Design
The challenge with the design, figuring out what the client wants and implementing that via a web site both through the artwork and programming.
3) Reveal.
The final process - seeing how happy the client is with the finished product......priceless

What inspired you to start your own business?

Initially coming from a Fine Art background I later ventured into Graphic design. During the 90's when web sites were first being employed I decided to learn how they work. I loved reverse engineering sites, seeing how they function, changing them, improving upon the artwork and programming. At first I designed a couple of sites for friends (just for fun), it just then took off and requests came flooding in. I decided to take a degree in IT which gave me the clout to set up my own business, which ive been enjoying ever since.
