My name is Tom and I am a guitar tutor based in Reading, with 16 years playing experience and 7 years playing professionally in the music industry. I offer tuition in both electric and acoustic guitar in a whole range of styles, and cater for beginners through to more advanced players.
Tuition takes place in your home at a time that suits you, I am based in Reading but happy to travel to the surrounding areas. I can also offer tuition from my private flat in Reading if you would prefer.
I studied Music at GCSE level and Music Technology at A Level, achieving my Grade 8 Electric Guitar whilst in college. Music is my passion and my full time occupation, since leaving college I have immersed myself in music in all forms; I have played in full time recording and touring bands, worked in a recording and rehearsal studio, spent a lot of time writing my own music and becoming proficient with recording software in my home studio.
As well as playing guitar, I also play keyboard, piano, drums and bass. I have a keen interest in electronic music and I enjoy using samplers, drum machines, synths and recording software to create music. I enjoy photography, films, video games and going to live gigs.
When I first finished college I began tutoring in the local area, taking on beginner students mainly, but through my tuition I have taken them from beginners to more advanced players. I have a regular group of students that I teach weekly and I'm always looking to take on new pupils, of all ages and skill levels. I have taught students of a variety of standards, so whether you are a complete beginner or looking to take your guitar playing to a new level I am sure I can help!
Much of my time in the music industry has been spent playing in various touring and recording bands, and I have been fortunate enough to achieve a lot in this time, including playing many prestigious festivals such as Reading and Leeds and T In The Park, as well as touring with some well known bands such as The 1975, The Pretty Reckless and Kids In Glass Houses. I have spent a lot of time recording, working with producers such as Adam Noble (Placebo, Coldplay), Pete Miles (Dry The River, The King Blues) and Romesh Dodangoda (Funeral for a Friend, Twin Atlantic). During this time I played guitar extensively with a vast array of musicians and in a variety of different environments which has helped me grow a huge amount as a player, and it is these skills that I apply and pass on in my lessons.
For the last five years I have also worked at a recording and rehearsal studio, through this job I have worked with a large amount of musicians of all ages and backgrounds, and feel extremely comfortable working with new people to achieve creativity.
I believe that an individual approach is required when it comes to tuition, everyone is different so I tailor lessons around you and your personal music taste; this is achieved through learning music and genres that you have a personal interest in. Generally I believe that one-to-one sessions work best, as students have my full focus and attention during the lesson, students do not feel that they are struggling to keep up with anyone else or that they are progressing too slowly. Whether you just want to learn your favourite songs on a casual basis or you want to prepare for grade examinations, lessons are planned to suit your needs, and are always conducted in a fun and enjoyable manner!
