We have been working with Niell and his team at SRA in redesigning an existing planning passed house design. We have found them to be highly efficient , offering good choice of recommendations and proposals and very easy and pleasant to work with. The brief had to take place within a short period of time and the team were very accommodating with this, especially in difficult Covid times.
I would highly recommend using SRA for future plans.

We have been thoroughly impressed with the professionalism and quality of the design work for our proposed extension by Niell and his colleagues at SRA Architecture. From day one, Niell has been very prompt and helpful in his communication, providing us with important details and advice on designs (the latter of which has been especially helpful as this is our first experience of building work), in addition to promptly providing us with high quality visualisations of the proposed work, revising these quickly based on our feedback, and subsequently submitting relevant documents for planning permission. While our project is not yet finalised, it has been a pleasure to work with Niell and we wouldn't hesitate to recommend him to others (and indeed, we already have!). In summary, an excellent experience overall and we can certainly highly recommend SRA Architecture if you are thinking about extension work in the future. More...

Q&As

Having been interested in architecture since I was 11 years old, I joined the Practice as a Trainee Architectural Technician in September 1987 when it was known as Stephen Roberts Associates. I then became an Associate and then a Partner in October 2004. Following the simultaneous retirement of two co-directors in December 2010, the name of the Practice was abbreviated to SRA Architecture Ltd and I became the Managing Director.

Our team is passionate, understanding and believe that honesty is the best policy when providing advice to our clients. We have been awarded the Best of Houzz 2024 Service Award and are rated 5 stars across multiple platforms because of our knowledge, and high quality design work across both residential and commercial projects.

Services

All of our team are well trained and experienced in conducting accurate measured building surveys.

Establishing base line information is usually the first point of action in any project and our measured surveys precisely record the existing structure. Where we don’t have any existing floor plans to work from, we produce a hand drawn sketch of each room on an individual page to maximise detail before measuring dimensions between all accessible surfaces. Whilst conducting the survey we will take a range of photographs to ensure we have obtained all pertinent information. These initial sketches, full of dimensions and information are then used by our team to produce accurate survey drawings using our CAD system. Our measured survey drawings form the basis for our feasibility and proposals drawings, hence the need for a thorough approach.

Once the feasibility scheme has been agreed with our Client, we develop our design and prepare drawings having the required information and detail required for a Planning Application.

Where it is a requirement of the application process in respect of particular works, we will also prepare a Design and Access Statement to explain the concept and need for the specific development. In more complex or unique developments it may be prudent to request Pre-application advice from the Local Authority Planning Officer prior to developing the scheme. Following this consultation our design may incorporate suggestions made by the Officer to increase the chance of a positive result.

The Building Regulations 2010 developed by the UK Government and approved by Parliament set out the minimum standards for design, construction, and alterations for practically every building.

We have a thorough understanding of the Building Regulations and consider their implications from our initial involvement with each project, to ensure that when we obtain Planning Permission, it is for a scheme that we can develop to satisfy the requirements of the Building Regulations, without having to back track and reconfigure elements, for which subsequent Planning Approvals may need to be obtained.

The drawings that we produce for the purpose of obtaining Building Regulations Approval, convey clear and detailed information and include large-scale details, where it is considered necessary or advantageous to explain the interaction of specific elements. This thorough approach helps to identify and eliminate potential issues at the design stage, which contributes greatly to the smooth running of projects once on site, avoiding delays and additional costs.

Having established the necessary background information, we are able to progress schemes to the Feasibility Stage, where we develop the project brief to produce an appropriate solution whilst also determining the requirement for any further information.

Our team use the latest CAD software to create both 2D and 3D designs, which take the form of drawings and can be presented to our Clients in hard copy and digital format. Using our specialist rendering software we are able to create realistic images, video sequence fly-rounds and walk-throughs to present our schemes in a format that can be preferable and easier to visualise.

Using some of the latest architectural rendering software, we are able to produce a range of 3D visualisations that can be used to convey our designs to Clients, Stakeholders, Planning Officer’s, and the wider community.

Using our architectural designs that have been developed in 3D as a base, our team can produce technically accurate and highly detailed still images, video-walkthroughs, and virtual interactive panoramas to breathe life into your project. We can present content in a range of different styles ranging from highly realistic visualisations, artistic impressions that include a variety of sketch styles, and simulations showing weather and sunlight patterns.

Whether you have an extensive site that is already developed or one that you are proposing to develop from scratch in phases, a Master Plan is essential for a long-term planning strategy for the site’s future potential.

Before we can begin to develop anything new, we need to establish existing factors such as neighbourhood, community, environment, and context. Once we have a base to work from, we can consider elements such as access, vehicular and pedestrian routes, car parking, size and massing of new structures, views, and landscaping.

Following receipt of Building Regulations Approval our in-depth knowledge of each scheme, combined with our extensive experience of building products and methods of construction, means that we are ideally placed to prepare detailed tender documents.

In developing our tender documents our team will coordinate and liaise with any other appointed consultants to ensure that the scheme is developed as a whole. We use external CDM and Health and Safety Consultants to prepare the necessary pre-construction information document to satisfy the requirements of the Construction Design and Management Regulations 2015.
