How can someone tell if their Garage is suitable for conversion?
When converting a garage there are some basic elements which needs to be taken into consideration as each area can differ, subject to local guidelines ie conservation area etc.
Change of use into a habitable room is required by submitting application to the council. If you are considering a self contained unit I would strongly suggest you contact an architect. Check the structural stability of the garage and ceiling height. Ensure asbestos is not present as it requires professional handling. You may also need a party wall surveyor and to comply with CDM regulations.
There is also an element of the relationship between the main house and the garage as to what can be achieved and acceptable to the council.
