Photography is more than pointing a camera at a subject and Nicky has a fantastic eye for a strong image as well as the patience and understanding to capture that image at just the right time.

What’s the secret to taking a great photograph?
I think patience is often the key to taking a great photograph. Being able to pause and take a moment to understand what's in front of me/around me is crucial for me; it allows me to connect with my subject and consider my composition.
What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?
I would usually try to get a sense of their expectations, but also try to understand them a bit more as a person - especially if it's a headshot or portrait shoot. All my shoots begin with a consultation, so that my clients have the time to get comfortable around each other. There are some fairly standard questions that I tend to ask (eg. what would you like to use these photos for, are there any specific photos that you've seen and really liked, have you ever been in a photoshoot before and how are you feeling about it, etc. If it's a different type of photography these questions would vary a bit!) but beyond that I simply try to get to know my client so I can create images that accurately represent them, just as they are.
Sometimes I prefer frame my shoots more as a conversation; I think of it as two people trying to get to know each other – one them just happens to be taking photos!
What do you love most about your job?
I love being able to respond to the creativity of others! At first glance, being a freelance photographer seems like a fairly individual profession, but it's given me the opportunity to meet and work with so many creative people! I love connecting with a work of art or a piece of music that someone else has created, and feeling my own creativity kick-started in response!
What inspired you to start your own business?
I wanted to make photography a bigger part of my life. For quite a while photography was a hobby that I was passionate about, but steadily more and more friends started asking me to do headshots of them, or photograph their gig. I realised that I was having a hell of a lot of fun, so why stop?!
Why should our clients choose you?
You should choose me because, despite my name, I’m not interested in just taking photos; I’m interested in you, and in creating images that can really represent you as you are. I am affordable, non-judgemental and very keen to work with people who might not ordinarily feel comfortable hiring a photographer - or be able to afford a photographer.
