What’s your interior design process?
1. Client Briefing at client location.
2. Information collection.
3. If not already available - a measured building survey will be required to prepare electronic plans
4. Mass Designers prepare a Fee Proposal for consideration by the client. This describes all stages of the work and is broken down generally into the following stages of Work: A: Feasibility/ B: Concept Design/ C: Concept Amendments/ D: Detailed Design for Pricing and Construction/ E: Implementation / F: Quality Control. This document includes a Description of Project Requirements/ Confirmation of Services to be Provided/ Exclusions and Omissions/ Terms and Conditions of Appointment
5. Client signs and returns Confirmation of Appointment
6. Mass Designers invoice 100% first stage of work/ Take deposit - dependant on scale and duration of project
7. Design Work commences
8. Stages of Work progressed - dependant on Appointment and Services agreed. Planning and Building Regulations requirements assessed.
9. MASS Designers will attend regular site meetings (dependant on scale of project) on client's behalf to monitor progress of work and ensure design information has not been deviated from.
10. Quality Control and assistance at Completion. Preparation of snagging lists for client.
Which interior design styles can you cater for?
Contemporary solutions interpreting a wide array and variation of materials. We do not work with a 'house style' and respond appropriately to each and every project. We are not designers of 'Themed' environments. (We leave this to the experts at Disneyland).
What do you love most about your job?
The variety and variation of building types/ technical requirements/ our clients/ assisting our clients in realising their ambitions/ offering vision and opportunity where none could be seen/ stretching a budget to ensure that the finished article looks like more than was spent.
What inspired you to start your own business?
I worked for many years as a freelancer designer in large design organisations and was frustrated that client's were often not being offered the best advice due to demands on resources. I established my first London design consultancy as a Partnership in 1998 to correct this! Later I set up Mass Designers in 2007 to exploit emerging opportunities that could not be fulfilled in my previous business.

Can you provide your services online or remotely? If so, please add details.
We can conduct initial consultations remotely either as audio or video (zoom/ teams/ facetime/ meet/ skype/ whatsapp/ telegram). Dependant on what existing information is available - refurbishment projects will inevitably require us to visit site to gain a full and comprehensive understanding. We will sugest that you video film a tour of the site/ project for our better understanding and discussions.
What changes have you made to keep your customers safe from Covid-19?
For each and every project we conduct our own Viral Transmission Risk Assessment (VTRA). For any meetings that we attend, we will adopt precautionery measures as recommended by Public Health England (subject to alteration March 2021). This has generally recommended Personal Protection Equipment including face masks and use of hand sanitiser, but may include hand, eye and footwear protection in addition.
We respectfully expect that clients and their team members shall adopt the same precautions.
Interior Architectural Design
We provide the following stages of work for our clients:
*Outline Feasibility Design - exploratory sketches and basic layouts
*Conceptual design - ideas/ visuals/ materials and finishes palettes to approval
*Design Development - changes and review procedure for final approval
*Basic Information generation for Local Authority Consents (Conservation, Planning & Building Regulations) Landlord Consents, Licences and permissions
*Construction information and detailed design specifications for costing and implementation by contractors, including schedules and lighting designs
*Implementation - we act on your behalf as client 'guardians of design' to ensure that the project does not deviate from the agreed and approved design
*Quality Control - inspection and snagging at completion of project
Concept Design
We can prepare unique and appropriate design solutions to reflect your brief and project objectives using all our creative skills and experience.
Feasibility Design
An outline service, very much as an initial 'sketch exploration' to explore the viability of the scheme and identify any prohibitive issues that could affect progress and budgets.
Basic Layout Design
This might typically provide the client with the basic drawing information required for submission to obtain formal consents for the project, from Landlords, Planning Authorities (including Conservation Groups) and in conjunction with applications for specilist Licences and/ or permits. Typically this information would comprise Existing and Proposed Plans, Elevations and Section drawings thatexplain the scheme together with descriptions and samples of proposed materials relavent to the consents.
Detailed Construction Design
We would provide all construction design information required together with specifications and schedules for the accurate costing and implementation of the project. This would typically include all details for specialist fabrication and bespoke items in various materials ncluding joinery and metalwork.
At this stage we would also prepare comprehensive lighting plans and any associated details.
Implementation Stage
During the construction period we attend site on behalf of the client to monitor progress and ensure that there is no deviation form the approved design.
We act as 'Design Guardians' on behalf of the client.
We also respond remotely to 'Requests For Information' (RFI's) that may be occasionally needed to assist progress on site.
Quality Control
We provide representation on behalf of the client at the end of the project to ensure that the best quality of finishing and implementation has been achieved in accordance with the approved design.
We shall also prepare a master snagging schedule at completion for execution by the contractors.
