Rooms were tidy and spacious. Only downfall was the hot breakfast that was luke warm at best.

Had our company Christmas business meeting and afterwards annual party. I arrived way before official check in but the receptionist happily gave me room access. Great service! We had an excellent buffet lunch - the chicken wings were mouthwatering, plus all the side dishes were fab. After our business meeting we went down for drinks and our Christmas event. The dinner meal was fantastic. I chose pate for starters which was yummie and turkey and trimmings for mains which was to die for. Cheese plate chef chose an excellent selection. The room was large and very clean and the shower was invigorating. MacDonald Portal Hotel grounds are beautiful and please do yourself a favour and walk around them. 10 out of 10 for service attentiveness from the staff. I stayed here for 3 nights with my partner and I would recommend staying here. The check in process was quick, the staff were friendly and the room (signature) was a very good size. The Elemis toiletries were really nice and restocked daily which was great. |The only downside regarding our room was the view- a wall with concrete below. I’ll be staying again over Christmas, hopefully there will be more to look at than a wall this time!|The bar area was comfortable although the drinks took longer than they should have to arrive considering the number of other guests. |Overall it was a nice hotel, one I would recommend for the area as I will be visiting again. I had a lovely 2 night stay in a large room overlooking the greens of the golf course.||The room was spotless, spacious and the bathroom had a bath and shower as it was so generously proportioned. ||Tv great, free wi fi..||Lovely friendly staff everywhere especially dining area/ breakfast room. ||Breakfast was superb. Stayed here with my Girlfriend and her Parents for a few nights and we all enjoyed our stay. This is the 2nd time my in-laws have stayed here and had recommended it to us. ||||Location wise the hotel is approx 25 mins outside of Chester City Centre and I would say that a car is definitely required if you are staying at this hotel as it’s a bit off the beaten track. There is plenty of bars/restaurants and other shops situated in close towns such as Tarporley, ||||The hotel itself is nice enough with a big bar area, good spa facilities including swimming pool and numerous steam rooms/saunas and a gym. Treatments available also. ||The rooms were nice and spacious and have to say probably the most comfortable bed we have stayed in. The shower did have a bit of a smell to it although looked clean. The in-laws has to move rooms after the first night as there was a horrible smell in their room. The staff were good and moved them to another room the next day. ||Food wise we had breakfast every morning and I’m not sure what the deal is but the first morning was a cooked breakfast to order where as the following 2 mornings was a Buffett breakfast which was not as good although you got more grub) ||Overall the hotel was nice enough, staff were great and never had any real complaints. Great location and hotel the golf course on both sites is a credit to the green keepers after all the rain Cheshire has seen over the last six weeks so someone saying it’s like a farms field wrong all staff at the hotel are a credit to the industry

Beautiful venue for any occasion. The staff are very friendly and accommodating. The hotel is very clean and comfortable. I would recommend this hotel if you want to get a happy hassle free accommodation and venue.

Stayed 2 nights, house keeping top Mark's, service was polite throughout and with a smile, swedish deep tissue massage was amazing and recommended. Thank you to the spa team. Best gym in all the hotels I have been in. Sauna and steam room was lovely, had lots of kids in the pool which was understandable as it was half term. Jacuzzi would have been nice if it had one. I dont play golf but looks immaculate. One sizable problem was the breakfast. It was nice however I stayed at the Ibis budget hotel in London a few days earlier where the breakfast was nicer. Restaurant presentation was nice however there was no cutterlery kept near the food where you can help yourself. We sat down after a table was cleared but no cutterlery. Both mornings they were busy and rushed off their feet. 2nd morning I went to the breakfast bar 3 times and there were missing multiple items. I gave up with the hash browns the 3rd time. There were guests standing and waiting around clearly frustrated. Staff tried but could not keep up with demand whether it was food, clearing tables or topping up refreshments. Needs looking at. Arrived to a great receptionist, warm and welcoming, room was clean and tidy, but breakfast was chaos, not enough staff and totally self service- for £230 a night I would expect fresh cooked produce. the hotel was full of golfer who clearly didn’t realise you have have to put the lids back on food that is on a burner, consequently the food was barely warm- we were in a rush as we had an appt to get to, breakfast starts at 7.30, we were here just after that and most of the barely hot stuff was not even set up, no butter was ready to go with the toast, no marmalade at all. Pool and spa area is lovely. Good choice of steam/sauna rooms.Receptionist is quite curt and didnt provide any details on meal times. Family room was excellent size and comfortable.Maybe just an unlucky situation with a stag do celebration well into the night that could be heard clearly in the room. We recently stayed at the Macdonald Portal Hotel in Tarporley to attend a wedding and extended our stay over three nights. We were a little worried after reading the reviews but should not have done so. The hotel is in a gorgeous setting, is super clean, food was lovely but our over-riding impression was what a great team run this hotel. From reception, housekeeping, bar, restaurant and anyone we came into contact with could not do enough to be helpful and cheerful. There were lot of golfers, clearly for the great course, but they were all having a great time and their enthusiasm for their breaks was infectious rather than annoying as some reviewers have commented. Highlights included the tidiest room service we have had anywhere in the world - don't know who did this but headed into OCD territory which we both loved, Will in the restaurant who looked after us well during a particularly busy Friday night service, the bar staff who topped up our water bottles and fresh milk for our room every day and we would highly recommend this hotel for anyone wanting to staying near Chester or just have a nice break. My only negatives would be that the changing rooms and showers weren't as well kept as the rest of the facilities with a good number of lockers out of order etc. Im also not sure about value for money as we paid £50 for the day (including the treatments) but it was very busy so we had to share a lounger by the pool and felt like we were getting in peoples way in the pool. Very well kept and clean. Not sure the recent negative reviews are accurate as saw nothing to suggest this hotelis in decline in fact it was more than we hoped for, rate was excellent, staff were ok, woman on reception was a bit snotty and could have made more of an effort to be less icy but everyone else was friendly.
