Visited Matt with a bulging spinal disc. After one session I am pain free and no longer bent over. Matt gave me exercises to do to strengthen the affected area, and an amazing spinal massage to loosen it all. Excellent service, thanks Matt.

I am 54 and regularly cycle, climb and play vets rugby. I constantly ache and need to know pretty quickly if I can train through the injury, train around the injury or stop training. Matt has seen me on various occasions with a variety of issues and most recently for my shoulders. I was struggling to get fitness back in my left shoulder due to an impact injury and getting frustrated at lack of progress naturally. I booked in to see Matt and we developed a program to build strength and flexibility back into the joint. This kept me motivated knowing specific stretching and exercises were directly supporting the injury. Matt will discuss your lifestyle to ensure all solutions are holistic and appropriate. This included an acupuncture session to help release some final range of movement. I was surprised at how effective this was. If you are thinking of seeing a Physio in the Stoke area, get yourself down to Hawkes Physiotherapy @ Samien Fitness. Money well spent! More...

Acupuncture has been used by the Chinese for over 4000 years and it is now becoming accepted as a mainstream form of treatment for pain, injury, illness and disease. Acupuncture’s increasing popularity is now heavily backed by a strong evidence base to promote its effectiveness and is now recommended for certain conditions.

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture involves placing needles into the skin at various points & sometimes either moving or twisting them. The needles are very fine, which minimises discomfort. The needles are then left in the skin for a short period of time depending on your condition to ensure maximum treatment effect.

You are likely to feel a deep sensation while the needles are in and this actually helps muscles to relax, increases blood flow & reduces pain. Hawkes Physiotherapy, Stoke-on-Trent is regulated by the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists (AACP).

What does it do?

Acupuncture has been shown to stimulate the brain to produce natural pain relieving and healing chemicals into the blood stream and at the same time it stimulates nerves to block pain.

Is it safe?

Acupuncture is perfectly safe when practised by someone with appropriate training. The needles we use are disposable, pre sterilised and are single patient use only.

Will it work for me?

Research has shown that most people benefit from acupuncture. Recently it has been included in the treatment guidleines for chronic low back pain by the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (N.I.C.E.). It does not work for everybody & every condition, but consistently good results are achieved. The effects of acupuncture are usually cumulative, with the treatment effects increasing as treatment progresses. Some people respond quickly, but others take a few more treatments to get desired effects.

Acupuncture is not used in the following circumstances:

If you are on anti-coagulants (warfarin, heparin)

If you are allergic to metals (stainless steel)

If you have ever had an allergic response to a blood test

Hawkes Physiotherapy will always check your past medical history to ensure that it is safe for you to have acupuncture

What will I feel?

You will feel a slight scratch as the needle goes into the skin. If needed the needles will be moved or turned, an ache, tingling, tightening, warmth or a sting around the needles can be felt and is completely normal. It is also common to feel an ache for a little time afterwards also and once again this is normal and often desirable.

Are there any side-effects?

Acupuncture is a very safe form of treatment when used by qualified practitioners. However, nothing is 100% risk free. Like most forms of treatment there is a small risk of minor issues.

Apart from the usual ache afterwards the other possible side-effects include infection, extreme sleepiness & fainting. Symptoms may worsen post treatment in up to 3% of patients, some minor bleeding and/or bruising can occur but this is negligible and up to 1% of patients may experience pain post treatment.

If you are unsure just ask!

Here at Hawkes Physiotherapy in Talke, Stoke-on-Trent, we offer different types of massage:

‘Sports Massage (also referred to as soft tissue massage) is the management, manipulation and rehabilitation of soft tissues of the body including muscles, ligaments and tendons.’ (Sports Massage Association)

Sports massage is really just massage techniques that are applied to a sport setting or for a sporting reason.

Massage & therefore Sports massage can be divided into 4 categories relating to the reason for its application.

Remedial massage – Massage to aid the recovery of particular
injuries or specific problem areas. (Most commonly used in our Stoke-on-Trent Physiotherapy practice)

General preventative massage – A deep massage to give relaxation to any muscles that are found to be holding excessive tension, this is preventative as tense muscles are more liable to become injured & will hold joints stiff leading to pain.

Pre-event warm up massage – short, shallow & vigorous massage to get the blood flowing within the muscles. This is used before the event starts to prepare the body for sport and activity.

Recuperative massage – to soothe tired & aching muscles after work, sports events or hard training and aid the recovery process.

The benefits of massage include:

Pain relief
Relaxation of soft tissues
Stress relief
Improved circulation and lymphatic flow
Assists in the removal of metabolic waste
Sedates or stimulate nerve endings
Increase or decrease muscle length
Increase or decrease muscle tone
Assists scar tissue healing
Assists in the mental preparation for sport

Remember massage is not just for sports people. The benefits
above can also help relieve many day to day problems that everyone experiences.
