Q&As

Tutoring is a great way to help individual needs. There is nothing more satisfying to see, as an educator, than to have a pupil grasp new knowledge, use it, and gain confidence.

I spent many years as a teacher and have balanced this with private tuition. I have found that demand for my tutoring has out grown my ability to tutor due to time demands and therefore made the decision that tutoring was a much more enjoyable, and much more satisfying career than full time teacher.

All of our tutors have to hold Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). This is a qualification that anyone who teaches in a UK state school must have. Further to this, the person teaching your child is a specialist in the subject and age range being taught.

Safety of your child is paramount in everything that we do. All of our tutors are DBS checked, are vetted and we get references for each of them. On top of this we ensure we have first aiders on site.

Mainstream education can sometimes adopt a one size fits all approach to education. League tables and targets can often mean that teaching becomes a box ticking exercise. We believe that every child should have an opportunity to learn and develop in the way that suits them. We tailor our teaching to your child and make sure that they have every opportunity to engage with learning.

We offer our services on site at our Covid-19 safe classrooms, at present we do not feel that online learning is as good as face to face teaching.

Perspex visors around desk areas, tutors wear visors. Rooms are cleaned and disinfected between sessions. Pupils have there own packs with their own equipment they use.

Writing is currently a teacher judged assessment and is reported to parents at the end of Key Stage 2.

The Year 5 & 6 Writing booster gives students the opportunity to learn how to write a range of text types. Students will learn about the structural and language features of different types of texts and they will create their own pieces. Students will practise the important skills of planning, drafting and editing their writing. The writing booster incorporates spelling, punctuation and grammar into the workshops as is taught as part of the writing process.

Year 6 children will sit tests in grammar, punctuation, spelling, reading and maths. These tests are used to determine how your child had progressed and how they are performing compared with other children nationally. There is not currently a Writing test, however, your child’s writing is teacher assessed from pieces of writing they have produced in school. The KS2 SATs booster covers curriculum content for the National Curriculum tests your child will sit.

KS2 SATs booster is a weekly 2 hour session in which children will be prepared for the Key stage 2 National Curriculum Assessments.

Each session is split into sections that will cover:

Reading: We will teach students strategies to answer a plethora of questions from the range of content domains they will be assessed on.

Spelling, Punctuation & Grammar (SPaG): Students will work though spelling, punctuation and grammar curriculum objectives and have regular exposure to types of SPaG questions they will encounter on their test.

Mathematics: Students will work on curriculum objectives, learning strategies to answer arithmetic and reasoning questions. The tests currently consist of 2 reasoning papers and an arithmetic paper.

The 11+ booster is a class for children who want to sit the CEM 11+ test or for children who are working at greater depth and enjoy being challenged. This class is suitable for children who are dipping into greater depth work in their year group. Verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning and maths are taught and pupils will learn a range of strategies to answer questions. The material students are exposed to will put them ahead of the curve in their year group and will contribute towards SATs as well as 11+ preparation. Children are taught the important skills of comprehension, vocabulary building and manipulating numbers and making links in maths. These transferable skills are highly valuable as your child progresses through school.

It is important to view this booster as a positive investment to your child’s overall education and not used for the sole purpose of getting your child through the 11+ exam. A vast amount of children take the 11+ test each year and classes do not guarantee places.

Please note that if you are applying for an independent school or a school that uses the Common Entrance exam, you may wish to choose an additional writing booster since writing is not included in the 11+ booster.

Specialist teachers tutor these subjects for an hour. The sessions will help support and embed learning from school and fill any gaps of knowledge or understanding allowing our students to sit exams with increased confidence and knowledge.
