We called John at DISCOUNT PLANS for a loft conversion and a double story side extension. John was very firm at the beginning of our first call and i was a little stuck back by his straight to the point attitude. John explained everything from getting the best design out of our property to achieve the results we were looking for. John explained that we needed several designs put forward to the planners to get the best results mixing the existing permitted development rights and going for planning after the first stage loft build. I can highly recommend Discount Plans LTD for the average homeowner that does not need getting ripped off by other Architects. John quoted us £900 for a full building regulation package including structural calculations. We were getting quoted £3000 which was the same price as building the dormer shell!!! The drawings that were produced are the best drawings we have ever seen, even the building inspectors praised the quality of work. We were able to get quotes from various builders from John's drawings which was perfect as we were not held to ransom by other builders which did not have a clue about planning law or what we could achieve with the best internal layout to suit our living requirements. As soon as we made a contact and had the initial discussion we were so happy to have found a professional that was clear on the timelines, prices and services that will be offered.
John and his team have helped us to produce all the required drawings for a loft conversion and a side-turn extension. All the required paperwork was ready and delivered to us within the agreed timelines with no delays.

I am so happy we hired John at Discount Plans Ltd for the works we needed for our three bedroom house. John turned our three bedroom semi into a five bedroom family home with an amazing 50sqm2 ground floor extension to the rear. We were looking for Architects in the area and all of them were so expensive. John made the plans work for us and in two weeks were building. What do you love most about your job?
I started DISCOUNT PLANS 15 years ago after working in various structural engineering offices in central London at the age of 18. Mostly in freelance positions, changing from job to job at a yearly rate. I quickly lost my motivation working for big bosses looking for profits constantly. I decided I needed a change and wanted to help MY clients in a way that would benefit them. I saw a gap in the market where I knew I could make a difference. Every day I saw clients being treated badly by these companies I was working for. These high street company’s were taking advantage of the naive client’s which did not know the process, adding hidden fees, charging for endless amendment’s, charging for additional drawings, charging 5 times the amount I actually charge to my clients today for simple bog standard designs.
What inspired you to start your own business?
My company hit it off when the 2008 recession came in when home-owners were not prepared to pay £5000 for a loft design, instead going for us the technical draughtsman at a mere £950 with drawings being designed at a higher standard than the RIBA high-end ARCHITECTS. Our name spread instantly, home-owners were getting more educated by all the daytime TV programmes being screened such as, HOMES UNDER THE HAMMER (which we were filmed on in 2012) explaining the methods of using smaller architectural designers to get the job done at a third of the price. A big thank you also for the editor of IDEAL HOMES which listed our company’s services for recommended best designers! My motto, being honest from the outset you get results; our aim is to get in large volume of work in with small profits which helps you and your pocket.
