Chapelgarth is such a beautiful house and estate, it was the perfect place to get some serious work done for my PhD. Marcella was a friendly and accommodating host, the food was delicious and the structure of the writing course and activities were very well organised. I surprised myself how much I could write in just a few days! More...

I have attended the writing retreat in this incredible place last week and I’m still in the awe of how much I managed to write there. The structured sessions allowed for headspace to plan, assess and fulfil the set goals. I really enjoyed meeting other writers at varies stages of their projects and careers and gain the sense of shared writing journey. The house is truly wonderful, with focussed, warm and kind hosts and a very skilled chief (I mean it, the food was scrumptious! Thank you Roma). It felt like home from home when it came to comforts, exceptional in terms of surrounding area and very productive regarding writing. I completed majority of my 20 000 words chapter for doctoral thesis and I’m really glad I came as I would have never achieved that in three days at the university with family life at each side of the working day. I can’t recommend it enough for anyone who would like to complete any writing project. More...

I attended a writing retreat at Chapelgarth a few weeks ago and it was amazing. I have been trying to complete my PhD and due to a job with a very heavy workload, as well as family commitments I have found it very difficult to get the PhD finished. One of the key problems is that often I have trouble finding the 'head space' in which to write because I am often mentally overloaded with tasks I have to complete for work. I can honestly say it was the first time for many weeks that my mind was clear enough to allow me to work and this was due to the location, but also to the calming nature of Chapelgarth. Secondly the very simple structure to the day enabled me to have a very concentrated amount of time to get work done. The vegetarian food was excellent, and just the need not to concern myself with cooking meals for myself and others meant I could concentrate purely on writing. Marcella who ran the course was so welcoming and the strict adherence to times meant that I had to be focused on my work. It was also really good to meet academics, as a part-time student I work in isolation and it was good to meet others who were also trying to complete doctorates or writing papers. I would really recommend this writing retreat to anyone who is in my situation where it is difficult to concentrate at home no matter how supportive everyone is or if you just need time away to get your writing completed. Having the time to think and to write was invaluable. I returned home feeling enthusiastic and positive about my ability to actually complete the doctorate, which I had been doubting. Chapelgarth was a very positive experience, Thank you Marcella. More...

The retreat was especially timely for our project, we had outline plans for each academic output, but being co-located at Chapelgarth enabled us to have the time for combining deep thinking and lively debate, which resulted in exponential progress with our writing plans (Irene Hardill, Northumbria University)

A perfect weekend away for a group of girlfriends. Chaplegarth was a spot of luxury with great communal spaces for us all to get together. It was well equipped in the kitchen and also had games and books should we need them, the fires were already laid and there were plenty of logs available. Luckily we had beautiful weather so were outside a lot - Marcella, our host, had recommended a walk through woods and fields and along the beautiful coast via a pub which was perfect for our mixed bunch. There's a good Coop a short drive away but we took lots of supplies with us. We hired a caterer recommended by Marcella for the Saturday night and that worked out brilliantly - we all headed for the lounge with our drinks and the gorgeous fire and were called to dinner - very special! Marcella was really communicative and helpful. I'd highly recommend Chaplegarth Estate for a special weekend away. More...

Fantastic family weekend We have just returned from Chapelgarth after a weekend away with the family for my Grandad's 80th birthday. There were 17 of us covering a range of ages along with two dogs. The house was perfect - the bedrooms were beautiful and we all appreciated the comfy beds and crisp linen. The kitchen and dining room were perfect for big family meals and were well catered for cooking large meals. The living room was spacious and we enjoyed the log fires. The nursery was a particular hit with table football and games console. We particularly enjoyed the grounds including the sunken trampoline in the garden, chickens and Llamas. Chapelgarth Estate is a very special venue for a perfect wedding. We had such a relaxed and intimate feeling to our day that I'm sure we wouldn't have got anywhere else. From the moment we arrived until we left everything was fantastic, we didn't want it to end and wish we could have stayed longer. Even the dog was sad to leave, she wouldn't get out of the car when we arrived back home. She absolutely loved it there :-) There were never any issues about the dog being part of our day, which was very important to us. My makeup & hair ladies even commented how bizarrely relaxed (for a wedding morning) and lovely everything was about the place & our photographer was blown away with Chapelgarth for its location and beauty. They all wanted to come back for more weddings!! Marcella and family are so lovely and professional, nothing seemed too much trouble. So well organised and knew how best to set everything up for the big day so it would work best. We couldn't have asked for a better location, more stunning setting and a better family to look after us during our stay.Thank you so very much! More...

Throughout the preparations, Marcella guided us with a sure and most patient hand, full of wonderful advice and know-how. She also arranged superb catering for the resident guests over the wedding weekend: the cuisine and service were of the highest order. On the day, Marcella and her wonderful family choreographed the different actors and guests seamlessly, on occasions rising well above the call of duty, all to make a great success of the whole event. We have just spent a wonderful weeks holiday at Chapelgarth estate. Seven adults, five teens and two dogs....and not a cross word or woof! The home was amazing, so spacious, well stocked and very comfortable. Great fun exploring the house and grounds. Marcela was there to greet us and help with any queries, making us feel very welcome.
There was so much to keep us well occupied, walking, cycling, games and finding our way around the coastal towns. We loved Saltburn by the sea, the teens enjoyed the sea and surfing and we even had the pleasure of hiring one of their new beach huts. All amenities provided and we can thoroughly recommend it. Then we had the fun of the crazy golf at Stokesbery, a murder mystery evening and a delicious meal at Joblins in Great Alton.
Chapelgarth was a very special home from home. A holiday to be remembered for a long time. Thank you Marcela

Myself and 16 of my family & friends spent last weekend in this fantastic house and enjoyed every minute. The initial welcome was very warm with very few rules to abide by. The house was beautiful and well kept but felt homely and cosy. The children in our party varied in ages from 4 to 15 but were kept entertained by the games room, outdoor facilities and generally being able to have free run of such a huge house.
The surrounding areas and amenities were easily accessible and as such the few supplies we had run out of were available following a short drive.
