Incontinence And Its Causes

Incontinence is the inability to control one’s bladder or bowels. This loss of control can cause a person to have a bowel or urinary leakage at any time and any place.



While there are different types of incontinence, the most common among older adults are:

Fecal (Bowel) Incontinence

Fecal incontinence occurs when stool leaks from the rectum so quickly that a person cannot get to the bathroom in time. Bowel incontinence can be the result of:

Diarrhea
Chronic constipation
Medication
Muscle damage
Nerve damage

Urinary incontinence
Urinary incontinence occurs when increased pressure from activities such as coughing, laughing or sneezing causes the bladder to leak. This condition has numerous causes that include:
Alzheimer’s disease (which affects the nervous system)
Diabetes, stroke and other chronic conditions
Medication
Nerve damage
Pelvic organ prolapse in women
Prostrate conditions in men
Weak bladder muscles

Similarly, another study found that urinary incontinence was associated with a two-fold increase in falls, as well as a decrease in physical functioning and a factor in placing older adults in a nursing home.

What does Palliative care mean
Palliative care is treatment, care and support for people with a life-limiting illness, and their family and friends. It’s sometimes called ‘supportive care’.
The aim of palliative care is to help you to have a good quality of life – this includes being as well and active as possible in the time you have left. It can involve:
managing physical symptoms such as pain
emotional, spiritual and psychological support
social care, including help with things like washing, dressing or eating
support for your family and friends.
A life-limiting illness is an illness that can’t be cured and that you’re likely to die from. You might hear this type of illness called ‘life-threatening’ or ‘terminal’. People might also use the terms ‘progressive’ (gets worse over time) or ‘advanced’ (is at a serious stage) to describe these illnesses. Examples of life-limiting illnesses include advanced cancer, motor neuron disease (MND) and dementia.
You can receive palliative care at any stage in your illness. Having palliative care doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re likely to die soon – some people receive palliative care for years. You can also have palliative care alongside treatments, therapies and medicines aimed at controlling your illness, such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy.

What is included?
Live-in care offers a great value alternative to a residential care home. Included in the price is specialist one-on-one care 24 hours a day as well as companionship and the opportunity for the client to stay in the familiar surroundings of their own home.

Your carer will carry out your essential day-to-day care as well as household tasks, including cooking and assisting with social arrangements.

Our management fee is also included in this cost.
