We are the first time dog owners.  Although we previously attended puppy classes with out 1 yo Boston terrier, we were struggling with recall and "selective " hearing . We were also not sure how to deal with an overexcited dog.Google directed me to Joy's web page and links to her videos. Lots of useful information, advice and examples.  We had a very productive phone consultation - I felt I was listened to and reassured that our concerns could be "fixed". Joy identified our main problems, set the plan, advised what to buy ( in our case it was a training lead). We had three 1:1 sessions - two were held both indoors and outdoors in a safe enclosed area. I felt relaxed, my dog felt at ease- he maintained interest throughout the length of each session. Joy identified the toys and treats that Bertie was attracted to, got his attention, introduced games to "tire him out " mentally as well and physically. We had great sessions playing object "hide-&-seek" and hiding the treats indoors and outdoors. We learnt how to keep his attention away from other dogs and people ( particularly runners in our case).  Our last session was held in Pittville park.  If you asked me 3 months ago, I would have never believed that I could let him off the lead there! Joy showed us the ways dogs receive and process information. She pointed at the temptations they may have that force them to ignore the owners .  Joy also taught us how to help the dog to make "the correct choice" and how to reward appropriately to maintain the interest.Obviously, there is a lot more work to do with our Bertie . It suddenly became fun and enjoyable for the whole family.  Children are now playing "hiding games" instead of winding the dog up by running  or jumping like mad. And our Bertie can't wait for his walks because it means his favourite treats and outdoor toys and freedom with rewards when called back are there. We will be back for more advice and fun sessions.I would definitely recommend Joy- passionate and knowledgeable about dogs. Achievable goals tailored for each dog and owner. Thank you Joy! More...

We have not owned a dog before we brought Hazel home and we didn’t know what sort of training a pup needs.Reading through several sites and reviews, we decided to book the ‘Puppy Starters’ course with Joyful Dogs. The description of the course and what was to be expected was helpful and clear.Once we started the course, we quickly learned that the training was not just for the pup but for us as well.We learnt lots of techniques and exercises to keep Hazel focussed on us.At home we use the games we learned like ‘find it’ which Hazel loves!Since we began the training, Hazel is more focussed on us and is much easier to go for a walk.Using Joy’s recall practices and techniques, Hazel comes back to us when we call 90% of the time... success! As we have still got lots more to learn, we have booked the ‘Improvers’ training and are very much looking forward to it!The training, advice and tips we have been given are very good and we highly recommend Joyful Dogs to any owner. Q&As

Working with animals has always been a passion ever since I was a child. After spending 12 years in the military I settled down and started a new career training dogs and their owners!! Dogs are now a massive part of my life and I have had recent experience working as an assistant manager at a rehoming centre in Gloucestershire so every day for the past 3 years i have been working with dogs, training and helping them become well behaved and active members of their society.

My wife suggested I start once I received my diploma in canine behaviour and welfare in 2013 the prospect of helping others and the dogs they own to communicate better and understand one and other was too much to pass up.

I train using force free, positive reinforcement training. I believe it is our jobs as humans to understand how dogs communicate and transfer that into a language we can understand. this is my purpose in life and to educate the wider community that all dogs are trainable.
